This rare unsigned oil sketch by Jacques-Emile Blanche can be dated circa 188when the very young artist was working in Henri Gervexs Paris studio andbe related to another signed oil sketch of two fellow students also aroundsame date which is in a private collection (catalogue raisonn no. 385). The pstanding figure in a frock coat is painted in the same spontaneous way andchair seems to be part of the Gervex studios furniture. This off-the-cuff oil skusually called pochade by the French, does not represent Debussy as statean exhibition label on the stretcher but an unnamed visitor to the atelier. Jean Braud is best known for his boulevard scenes of Belle poque Paris, wcombined a sense of panache with an acute eye for anecdotal detail, but in wfigures are often rendered as stock types. His portrait of the great French and historian Hippolyte Taine, however, is unusually penetrating. A study fogroup portrait, La Salle de redaction du Journal des dbats (The Editorial Rof the Journal des Dbats), in which Taine is depicted alongside other pre-emFrench intellectuals, here he is seated in profile against a plain background whighlights his thoughtful features, captured as if in casual conversation, a cigadangling from his right hand. Braud presents a spontaneous and sympaimage of a man who is both engaging and distinguished, as hinted by flacolour the Legion dHonneur pin on his lapel, and his wire-rimmed spectacle

Jean Bourdeau (1848-1928), to whom the painting is dedicated, also featurthe same group portrait; he was a friend of Brauds and a regular contributthe Journal des Dbats.

Important Notices and Explanation ofCataloguing Practice

    IMPORTANT NOTICES

    CHRISTIES INTEREST IN PROPERTY

CONSIGNED FOR AUCTIONFrom time to time, Christies may offer a lot whichit owns in whole or in part. Such property isidentified in the catalogue with the symbol nextto its lot number. On occasion, Christies has a direct financialinterest in lots consigned for sale, which mayinclude guaranteeing a minimum price or makingan advance to the consignor that is secured solelyby consigned property. Such property is identifiedin the catalogue with the symbol next to the lotnumber. This symbol will be used both in caseswhere Christies holds the financial interest on itsown, and in cases where Christies has financedall or part of such interest through third parties. When a third party agrees to finance all or partof Christies interest in a lot, it takes on all orpart of the risk of the lot not being sold, and willbe remunerated in exchange for accepting this

risk. The third party may also bid for the lot.Where it does so, and is the successful bidder, the remuneration may be netted against the finalpurchase price. If the lot is not sold, the thirdparty may incur a loss. Where Christies has anownership or financial interest in every lot in thecatalogue, Christies will not designate each lotwith a symbol, but will state its interest at the frontof the catalogue. In this catalogue, if property has Xnext to the lotnumber, Christies guarantee of a minimum pricehas been financed through third parties.

    ALL DIMENSIONS ARE APPROXIMATE

CONDITIONChristies catalogues include references to conditiononly in descriptions of multiple works (such asprints, books and wine). For all other property, only alterations or replacement components arelisted. Please contact the Specialist Departmentfor a condition report on a particular lot. Thenature of the lots sold in our auctions is such thatthey will rarely be in perfect condition, and arelikely, due to their nature and age, to show signsof wear and tear, damage, other imperfections, restoration or repair. Any reference to conditionin a catalogue entry will not amount to a fulldescription of condition. Condition reports areusually available on request, and will supplementthe catalogue description. In describing lots, our

staff assess the condition in a manner appropriate tothe estimated value of the item and the nature ofthe auction in which it is included. Any statementas to the physical nature or condition of a lot, in acatalogue, condition report or otherwise, is givenhonestly and with appropriate care. However,Christies staff are not professional restorers ortrained conservators and accordingly any suchstatement will not be exhaustive. We therefore

recommend that you always view propertypersonally, and, particularly in the case of any itemsof significant value, that you instruct your ownrestorer or other professional adviser to report to

    you in advance of bidding.

    11/04/14

    PROPERTY INCORPORATING MATERIALS

    FROM ENDANGERED AND OTHER

PROTECTED SPECIESProperty made of or incorporating (irrespectiveof percentage) endangered and other protectedspecies of wildlife are marked with the symbol ~in the catalogue. Such material includes, amongother things, ivory, tortoiseshell, crocodile skin, rhinoceros horn, whale bone and certain species ofcoral, together with Brazilian rosewood. Prospectivepurchasers are advised that several countries prohibitaltogether the importation of property containingsuch materials, and that other countries require apermit (e.g., a CITES permit) from the relevantregulatory agencies in the countries of exportationas well as importation. Accordingly, clients shouldfamiliarise themselves with the relevant customs lawsand regulations prior to bidding on any property

with wildlife material if they intend to import theproperty into another country. Please note that it isthe clients responsibility to determine and satisfy the

requirements of any applicable laws or regulationsapplying to the export or import of propertycontaining endangered and other protected wildlifematerial. The inability of a client to export or importproperty containing endangered and other protectedwildlife material is not a basis for cancellation orrescission of the sale. Please note also that lotscontaining potentially regulated wildlife material aremarked as a convenience to our clients, but Christiesdoes not accept liability for errors or for failing tomark lots containing protected or regulated species.

    RECENT CHANGES TO IMPORTS OF

    ELEPHANT IVORY AND OTHER WILDLIFE

    MATERIAL INTO THE USA

The USA has recently changed its policy on theimport of property made of or containing elephantivory. Only Asian Elephant ivory may be importedinto the USA, and imports must be accompanied by

DNA analysis and confirmation the object is morethan 100 years old. We have not obtained a DNA

analysis on any lot prior to sale and cannot indicatewhether the elephant ivory in a particular lot isAfrican or Asian elephant. Buyers purchase theselots at their own risk and will be responsible for thecosts of obtaining any DNA analysis or other reportrequired in connection with their proposed import ofsuch property into the USA.

The USA is also currently requiring all imports ofproperty made of or containing wildlife materialto be accompanied by a sci entific confirmation ofspecies and in some cases an addit ional confirmationof age. We have not obtained such confirmationsprior to sale (unless specifically indicated) andbuyers will be responsible for the costs of any suchadditional confirmations or opinions required fortheir proposed import into the USA.

A buyers inability to export or import any lot

containing elephant ivory or other wildlife material

is not a basis for cancelling the purchase.

POST 1950 FURNITUREAll items of post-1950 furniture included in thissale are items either not originally supplied for usein a private home or now offered solely as worksof art. These items may not comply with theprovisions of the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989 and1993, the Regulations).
