legendary pianist Maurizio Pollini and star conductor Christian thielemann – two masters of their domain – team up with the staatskapelle Dresden for an exceptional

concert of late-romantic music. For his first concert with the staatskapelle in nearly 25 years, Pollini chose Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, a mighty work that makes great demands on the pianist, and even consented to a recording that truly bears witness to this “musical event of genuine greatness” (Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten).

the two musicians emphatically inspire one another, joyfully spur one another on to ever new heights of artistry. as the designated principal conductor of the staatskapelle, thielemann harnesses “his” orchestra’s dynamic power and melds it with Pollini’s vitality in an amazing account of Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto no. 1. With this luxuriously romantic concert, the star conductor has laid an important foundation stone for the upcoming Brahms cycle.

thielemann pairs the First Piano Concerto with two rarely played works, Brahms’ “tragic Overture” and Reger’s “Romantic suite”. With the latter, he makes a further contribution to the series of neglected works given their first performance in Dresden. Reger’s charming, colorfully orchestrated work, premiered with the staatskapelle in 1912, is often Mozartian in tone and a valuable addition to the romantic repertoire.
