The New Testament of the Bible tells of twokingdoms - the kingdom of this world and thekingdom of God.

The kingdom of this world is under theinfluence of Satan (Luke 4:5-6, John 14:30-

31, 1 John 5:18-20, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4).The dominant values of the world includewealth, power, pleasure, revenge, fame, vanity and status. These things are mostimportant to people who perceive no power orpurpose beyond themselves. Worldly valuespromote jealousies, resentments and conflictsamong people in accordance with thepurposes of Satan (John 8:44, Acts

    5:3,Romans 16:17-20, 2 Corinthians

The kingdom of God (also known as thekingdom of heaven) is not a geographic

location. It exists within the world amongthose people who put their faith, trust andloyalty in God (Luke 17:20-21). The values ofthe kingdom of God are often the opposite of

worldly values: kindness and respect for allpeople instead of power; humility instead ofstatus, fame and vanity; honesty andgenerosity instead of wealth; self-control

instead of pleasure; forgiveness instead ofrevenge. Christian values promote peace andgood will among people in accordance withthe purposes of God.

These are the things we strive for if we are

    1. Worship only GodOne day, a religious leader asked Jesus which

of the commandments was most important:"The most important one," answeredJesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lordour God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord

your God with all your heart and with allyour soul and with all your mind and withall your strength.' (NIV, Mark 12:28-30)

The Hebrews of Old Testament times tendedto lapse into worship of pagan deities andstatues of animals or other objects, butanything that takes the place of our devotionto God becomes an idol or false god, and that

is forbidden by the first of the Ten

In today's world, many things competeagainst God for our devotion. These are some

of the things that can become modern-dayidolatry if we let them become too importantto us:

Excessive attention to material things such ashouses, cars, clothes, jewelry, physicalappearance, entertainment, etc.

Pursuit of wealth, power, fame, pleasure orstatus

Excessive devotion to self, job, hobbies, country, ideologies, heroes, leaders, even family

    2. Respect all peopleAfter saying "Love the Lord your God" is the

most important of the commandments, Jesuscontinued,

The second is this: 'Love your neighboras yourself.' There is no commandment

greater than these."(NIV, Mark 12:31)The English word "love" has many different

meanings, but the Greek word, agape, usedin the New Testament, is commonly known as

"Christian love." It means respect, affection, benevolence, good-will and concern for thewelfare of the one loved.

In His Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesusmade the point that we should extend our

    3. Be humble

Humility or being humble is a quality of beingcourteously respectful of others. It is theopposite of aggressiveness, arrogance, boastfulness, and vanity. Acting with humilitydoes not in any way deny our own self worth.

Rather, it affirms the inherent worth of allpersons. Humility is exactly what is needed tolive in peace and harmony with all persons. Itdissipates anger and heals old wounds. It

allows us to see the dignity and worth of allGod's people. Humility distinguishes the wiseleader from the arrogant power-seeker(Proverbs 17:7, Matthew 20:20-28).

    4. Be honest

Honesty and integrity are held as very

important values throughout the Bible, andany deception to gain an advantage or harmanother is prohibited by the TenCommandments (Exodus 20:16) and other

Bible passages. Deception may be by falsestatements, half-truths, innuendo, or failing totell the whole truth. It is all too common inadvertising, business dealings, politics and

everyday life. We must strongly resist thetemptation to engage in any form of theft, cheating, deception, innuendo, slander orgossip.

Do you not know that your body is a

temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? Youare not your own; you were bought at aprice. Therefore honor God with your

    body.(NIV, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Jesus gave a list of actions that constituteimmoral uses of the body: evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, arrogance andfoolishness. The apostle Paul gave similarlists.

    6. Be generous with time and moneyThe Bible tells us to share generously with

those in need, and good things will come to usin turn. Each of us has something to offer tosomeone in need. We can give our money andour time to charity, be a friend to someone

who is sick or lonely, do volunteer work orchoose a service-oriented occupation. We maygive unselfishly of our time to our spouse, children or parents.

    7. Practice what you preach; don't be ahypocrite

If there was any one group of people thatJesus couldn't stand, it was hypocrites! ThePharisees of Jesus' time were a religious andpolitical party that insisted on very strictobservance of Biblical laws on tithing, ritualpurity and other matters. At the same time, many of the Pharisees forgot the true spiritand intent of the law and became self-indulgent, self-righteous, snobbish, and

greedy. That led Jesus to remarks such as,

Woe to you, teachers of the law andPharisees, you hypocrites! You are likewhitewashed tombs, which look beautifulon the outside but on the inside are full

    8. Don't be self-righteous

No one is perfect; we are all sinners in one

way or another (Romans 3:23). Living a morallife means taking responsibility forcontrolling our own behavior. If we say oreven think we are better than people we

consider to be "sinners," we are guilty of thesin of self-righteousness. It is not our right tolook down on, criticize, judge, condemn, or tryto control other people. Judgment is to be left

to God. Jesus said,Do not judge, so that you may not bejudged. For with the judgment you makeyou will be judged, and the measure you

give will be the measure you get. Why do'

    9. Don't hold a grudgeJesus said there is no place for hatred, holding

a grudge, revenge, retaliation or getting evenin the life of a Christian:

You have heard that it was said, 'Eye foreye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you,

Do not resist an evil person. If someonestrikes you on the right cheek, turn tohim the other also. And if someonewants to sue you and take your tunic, let

him have your cloak as well. (NIV,Matthew 5:38-40)

You have heard that it was said, 'Loveyour neighbor and hate your enemy.' But

I tell you: Love your enemies and pray

    10. Forgive others

If you forgive those who sin against you,

your heavenly Father will forgive you.But if you refuse to forgive others, yourFather will not forgive your sins. (NLT,Matthew 6:14-15)

God is merciful and forgives our sins andfailings. In the same way, we must be mercifuland forgive other people who sin against us ordo us harm.

For Christians agape is the key Christianvalueit lies at the root of all other values.

It means respect, affection, benevolence, goodwill and concern for the welfare of theone loved. It means putting others firstbefore oneself.

I Corinthians chp 13 vss 4-7: Love ispatient, love is kind. It does not envy,it does not boast, it is not proud. It isnot rude, it is not self-seeking, it isnot easily angered, it keeps no recordof wrongs. Love does not delight inevil but rejoices with the truth. In the Lords Prayer we ask God to forgive usour sins or trespasses as we forgive thosewho sin against us. What a thing to askwe

are saying we wish God to treat us in thesame way we treat other people!

God is merciful and forgives our sins and

failings. In the same way, the Lords Prayerassumes, we must be merciful and forgiveother people who sin against us or do usharm.. Unfortunately, as we know, peoplefrequently find it difficult to apologise to otherpeople, or to forgive each other. Jesus gave usan example of how this was done in hisParable of the Prodigal Son (Luke chp 15 vss11-32). An even more potent example of this

is his forgiveness of his persecutors as he

Justice and mercy are key themes ofthe writings of the Old Testament

the socially disadvantaged are caredfor, whether they deserve it or not..In Gods eyes every person is

precious and oppression ordiscrimination, on any grounds, hasno place. Gods justice is graciousHe always acts justly and he calls on

    Service and

    Stewardship

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    33/53

    7/26/12

Properly understood, service is a revolutionaryconcept. The notion of service calls

individuals to lay selfish things aside for theneeds of others. It is also an important valuefor all social relationships . The idea ofChristian service is most clearly seen in Jesuswillingness to serve humanity by giving up hislife in order that others might be saved. As hesaid of himself, he did not come to beserved, but to serve, and to give his lifeas a ransom for many. In this and in

many other ways, including washing the feetof his disciples, he set Christians an examplefor them to follow. Greatness, according to hisscale of measurement, involves being the

servant of others. (John chp 13 vss 1-20)

    7/26/12

Service is closely related to the Value ofStewardship. Stewardship is aboutmankinds responsibility to use, and notabuse, the resources we have been given, whether they be natural resources or wealth

etc. In schools the governors staff and pupilsshould certainly be good stewards of theresources they have been given, and this maylink up with Eco awareness. Adults are

stewards of the young lives in their care.

The biblical concept of peace is not just theabsence of war. It includes peace with God,positive harmony and healthy relationshipsbetween people . It involves spiritual as well

as material security. Peace is a wholeness, astate of well-being. Jesus told us not to worryor be concerned about material things for Godknows our needs. Anxiety is a denial of peace.Peace, in the sense of total well-being for thewhole of creation, is the ultimate goal.

Equality and Inclusiveness regardless ofgender, race, nationality, religion, social oreconomic status shine through Biblicalteaching. Matthew chp 25 vss 31-40 tells usthat the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, those inadequately clothed, the sick, theprisoners should be the objects of our careand concern. Galatians chp 3 vs 28 tells usthat social labels such as Jew, Greek, slave,

free, male, female do not apply to God'speople. Throughout the Gospels Jesus himselfis shown mixing with, and loving andsupporting, the outcasts of society the poor,

    women and children.

Basic to Christian faith is the belief that God ispresent in every situation, and this has led togreat acts of courage. Courage takes many

forms: it may mean facing up to opposition orpersonal danger; it may mean overcomingyour personal fears or phobias; it could meanmaking a stand for the right.

In the Gospels we find many stories of Jesusshowing compassion to the sick and thedowntrodden of society. Christians believe

that their attitudes and actions must reflectthe kindness, mercy and compassion of Jesusand the love of God for everyone.

Christians would say that God Himself is theperfect example of communitythe threepersons of the Trinity are bound together inthe ultimate closeness which makes themone. It is an image which constantly recurs in

    Johns Gospel (e.g. chapters 15 & 17).

    Guide in ValueSelection

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    46/53

    7/26/12

    A value must be chosen

freely. If it is somethingused guide one's life, it

cannot be dependent onsome authority figureenforcing the value. It must

    be free from coercion.

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    47/53

    7/26/12

A value is always chosen from

among alternatives. Obviously, there can be no choice if there areno alternatives from which to

choose. (It makes no sense, forexample, to say one valueseating. One really has no choice

in the matter. On the other hand, many of us value what we eat!)

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    48/53

    7/26/12

A value results from a choicemade after thoughtfulconsideration ofchoices. Impulsive or thoughtlesschoices do not lead to values. For

something to guide one's lifemeaningfully, it must come about bycarefully weighing the consequences.

Only then can we make intelligentchoices. (One's view on abortionwould be a good example here.)

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    49/53

    7/26/12

    When we value something,

it has a positive quality forus. We prize it, cherish it,esteem it, respect it, hold it

deal. Values flow from choiceswe are glad we made.

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    50/53

    7/26/12

When we have chosen somethingfreely after consideration ofalternatives, when we are proud ofour choice, glad to be associated withit, we are willing to affirm our

values publicly. We may even wantto champion them. ( Do we getpeople to sign petitions for or against

liquor by the drink? Are we willing togive time and money to a cause?

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2

    51/53

    7/26/12

When we have a value, it

shows up in every aspect ofour living. We spend money onthings we value. We budget timeand energy for out values. (Theperson who talks about somethingbut never does anything about itis not speaking of his values.)

  • 7/31/2019 Christian Concept of VALUES2
