John 1:14 As we approach this Christmas season, we all experience it from different perspec ves. Many of us are in mes of joy, with blessings that surround us. Many of us face this Christmas in a me of sorrow, perhaps without a loved one for the first me, or perhaps a sorrow that makes us wonder if we will ever find joy again. However this Christmas comes to you, there is good news! Jesus broke into our messed up world 2,000 years ago for one rea-son — to show us what kind of God we have and how far our God will go to show us love and grace! We are told in John 1:14 that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. What kind of God does this? What kind of God, instead of demanding to be served, will come to serve? What kind of God, instead of staying far removed from a broken world, enters into it in the most hum-ble of circumstances? What kind of God is willing to lay down His life for creatures that o en want nothing to do with Him? This December, we cel-ebrate the Advent and Christmas experience is so many wonderful ways!
• Sunday, December 10th — The Christmas play, “Christmas By the Book!”, will be at both morning services - 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. - with many members of our church bringing home the message of grace in a special way.

• Sunday, December 17th — The Christmas Choir Concert, at both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services, will feature our chancel choir and an orchestra sharing the message through powerful music and scriptures!
• Sunday, December 24th — Christmas Eve is on Sunday this year, so we will combine the morning services into ONE service at 10:00 a.m. and then will have three evening services at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. We will NOT have the late service at 11:00 p.m. this year, but our 8:00 p.m. service will be in the Fellowship Hall in the style of our Brook service. We will also be reaching out to our neighbors in two specific ways: • The “Jesus Loves the Li le Children” Women’s event will happen on Saturday, December 2nd at 11:00 a.m., with gi cards and books going to the children of Refugio, Texas who were devastated by Hurricane Harvey this past summer.
• The Brook Christmas Potluck will take place a er worship on Sunday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m., with a food outreach through CTK’s Sharing the Table ministry. This will benefit local families from Fallbrook Street School that have food insecuri es. No ma er how Christmas comes to you this season, we can know that we have a God who breaks in, walks with us and calls us to be a blessing to those around us. God’s message is that Jesus came, not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many. He gave His life on the cross as the most powerful Christmas gi ever given so that we can live...not just eternally in heaven, but today knowing that through faith in Jesus, we are a precious child of God! Merry Christmas! I hope you can experience the amazing love and joy of the season with us! What a plan God had to bring us His Son as a baby! However you envision this baby’s birth, let us remember there was no room for Mary and Joseph in the Inn and this Christ Child’s beginning was very hum-ble. Rio Bravo Mission Trip …Are You In?! April 2nd-7th, 2018
We are off and running to Reynosa, Mexico! Prayerfully consider joining us for a mission trip to Casa de Hogar. It is a wonderful children’s home run and cared for by faithful and loving people. Sign-ups begin on Sunday, December 3rd at 11:45 a.m. in the Fire-side Room. The cost of the trip is $750. A limited number of STM scholar-ships are available through our Mission Commi ee. Helping our Neighbors through God’s Bounty
This school year God’s Bounty has helped to feed 268 families, or 1,208 individuals, at Vallecitos School and in the neighboring Rainbow com-munity. We have served students, parents, seniors and singles. Without your help and support, along with our partnership with The San Diego Food Bank, this would not be possible. 7 Things Every Church Member Needs to Know About Charitable Contribu ons
By Richard R. Hammar, J. D., LL. M., CPA 1. If I make a contribu on in early January 2018, can I claim it on my
2017 taxes? No, charitable contribu ons must be claimed in the year in which they are delivered.
Example: Mary writes a check to her church on December 31, 2017, and deposits it in the church offering on Sunday, January 7, 2018. Her check is not deduc ble on her 2017 taxes. She can claim it on her 2018 tax return. 2. If I mail my contribu on in December 2017, but it doesn’t reach my
church un l January 2018, for which year should I claim it? On your 2017 tax return. A check that is mailed to a charity is deduc ble in the year the check is mailed (and postmarked), even if it is received in the next year.
Example: Mary mails (and postmarks) her check in December 2017. Her church doesn’t receive the check un l January 2018. The check is deduc ble on Mary’s 2017 tax return.
3. Can I deduct the value of volunteer work I did for the church? No, the
value of personal services is never deduc ble as a charitable contribu-on. However, unreimbursed expenses you incur in performing services
on behalf of a church or other charity may be. For 2018, you can use a “standard mileage rate” to compute a deduc on for any miles you drive in performing services for your church. Be sure to maintain accurate records.
Example: John is an electrician and donates 10 hours of me to his church’s construc on project. He cannot deduct the value of his donated labor, but he can deduct the value of materials he purchased in performing the donated labor.
Example: Several church members go on a short-term missions project to another country. The value of their labor is not deduc ble, but they can deduct their unreimbursed travel expenses (transport- ta on, meals, lodging) incurred in performing the project. 4. I gave $135 to my church when I registered for a spring retreat. Can I
deduct that? No, assuming you received benefits (e.g., lodging, in-

struc on, materials) worth $135 or more. Charitable contribu ons gen-erally are deduc ble only to the extent they exceed the value of any premium or benefit received by the donor in return for the contribu-on.
5. Is there any limit to the amount of my contribu ons I can deduct on
my taxes? Yes, a contribu on deduc on ordinarily cannot exceed 50 percent of a donor’s adjusted gross income (a 30 percent rule applies in some cases). Donors who exceed these limits may be able to “carry over” their excess contribu on and deduct it in future years.
6. I designated my contribu on to the church benevolence fund. Is it de-
duc ble? That depends. “Designated contribu ons” are those made to a church for a specified purpose. If the purpose is an approved pro-ject or program of the church, you can deduct the contribu on (if you claim itemized deduc ons on Schedule A). If you designate a $100 gi to the church benevolence fund, it is deduc ble, unless you specify that your contribu on be applied to a named individual; then no deduc on is allowed. Contribu ons to a church or missions agency that designate a par cular missionary may be tax-deduc ble if the church or missions agency exercises full administra ve control over the contribu ons and ensures that they are spent in furtherance of the church’s tax-exempt purposes.
7. What kind of records do I need in order to prove I made a contribu-
on?
For individual cash contribu ons of under $250: You must have a bank record (such as a cancelled check) or a receipt from the church containing the church’s name, and the date and amount of each cash contribu on.
For individual contribu ons (cash or property) of $250 or more: You must receive a wri en receipt from your church that includes the church’s name; the date of the contribu on; the amount of any cash contribu on; a de-scrip on (but not the value) of noncash contribu ons; and one of the fol-lowing: (i) a statement that no goods or services were provided by the church in return for the contribu on; (ii) a statement that goods or services that a church provided in return for the contribu on consisted en rely of intangible religious benefits; or (iii) a descrip on and good faith es mate of the value of goods or services other than intangible religious benefits that the church provided in return for the contribu on.

The church may either provide separate receipts for each single contribu-on of $250 or more or one acknowledgment to substan ate several single
contribu ons of $250 or more. Separate contribu ons are not aggregated for purposes of measuring the $250 threshold.
If you’ve made individual contribu ons of $250 or more, don’t file your fed-eral income tax return un l you receive a contribu on statement from your church that sa sfies these requirements. Otherwise, your contribu ons may not be deduc ble. Canceled checks cannot be used to substan ate cash contribu ons of $250 or more.
For noncash property valued at $500 or more: Other rules apply (see the instruc ons to IRS Form 8283). If the value is more than $5,000, you must obtain a qualified appraisal of the property and a ach an “appraisal sum-mary” (IRS Form 8283) to the tax return on which the contribu on is claimed. Some excep ons apply.
For contribu ons of cars, boats, or planes: If a church sells the donated property without significant use, the donor’s contribu on deduc on is lim-ited to the sales proceeds. In addi on, the church must provide the donor, and the IRS, with a wri en acknowledgement (use IRS Form 1098-C) by the deadline prescribed by law. If the church significantly uses the property, the donor can deduct the market value. However, the church must s ll provide Form 1098-C to the donor and the IRS. Qualified appraisal and appraisal summary requirements apply if a deduc on exceeds $5,000 (see instruc-ons to Form 8283).
