From the Pastor’s Desk

On the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, our Responsorial Psalm during the liturgy is Psalm 72: “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” The idea of every nation adoring the Lord corresponds to the gospel story of the three magi coming to Bethlehem to adore Jesus. The magi were from “the east,” meaning that they were foreigners. They represent all non-Jewish people (Gentiles) who have been invited into a loving relationship with Jesus, the Savior of the entire human race. Over the course of this week, I encourage you to ponder the power of that statement: “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” To those without faith, this seems a bit far-fetched. With the immense diversity of cultures and religions throughout the world, is it really possible that every nation could come to adore Jesus? For Christians, the answer is Yes. We believe that, in God’s time, all people will come to know the love of Jesus and adore him as their God. The most pressing question is how you and I are called to help bring that about. What are our responsibilities as Catholics to share the gift of faith we have received and to invite others into a loving relationship with Jesus? Many people throughout the world are still seeking God, just as the three magi were seeking Him two thousand years ago. It falls to us to make a path for them to Bethlehem. By our witness and our words, let us lead every nation on earth – beginning with our neighbors, co-workers, and friends! – to adore the newborn King.

Father David Schalk Answer to last week’s question: The brothers and sisters of Jesus that are mentioned in the Bible were not born of the Virgin Mary. There are two possible explanations. They could be Jesus’ half-brothers or half-sisters from a previous marriage of Joseph. Or they could be Jesus’ cousins, who in that culture were considered as close as brothers and sisters.

En la Fiesta de la Epifanía del Señor el salmo responsorial de la liturgia es el Salmo 72: "Que te adoren, Señor, todos los pueblos". La idea de que todos los pueblos adoren al Señor es la respuesta a la historia del evangelio sobre los tres reyes magos que vienen a Belén a adorar a Jesús. Los magos eran "del oriente", lo que significa que eran extranjeros. On the feast of Epiphany, we recall the adoration of Jesus by the wise men, who had traveled “from the East.” They were looking for the newborn king of the Jews, though they themselves were not Jewish. “Their coming means that pagans can discover Jesus and

worship him as Son of God and Savior of the world”

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, #528). The Epiphany celebrates the revelation of the Messiah to the Gentiles (non-Jews) and to the

rest of the world.

While contemplating your New Year’s resolutions, wouldn’t it be great to make at least one change this year that brings you closer to God? Consider these ideas from other Catholics to strengthen your prayer life, learn more about your faith, or serve your parish. Greg was bored with his prayer routine and wanted a change. His priest suggested he try a novena, nine days of focused prayer. So, Greg chose a novena to the Immaculate Conception. He loved the meditations and felt a connection to Our Lady. Soon, he became hooked on novenas. Once again, he was excited to spend time in prayer. Jennifer’s husband is not Catholic

and asks lots of questions about her faith. Her own religious education ended years ago, and she became

dismayed when she couldn’t answer his questions.

Learning that adult faith formation classes were starting in her parish, Jenn jumped at the chance to learn more. “Everything I discover helps me to grow

stronger in my faith,” Jennifer declared. “I’m so excited by what I’m learning that my husband wants to come, too.”

Maureen’s children are grown and on their own, yet she teaches a

religious education class at her parish. “What better way to evangelize our faith than to share it with children? That’s where I can do some real good,” she said.

St. Angela Merici Born in Italy, St. Angela and her

sister were raised by an uncle after the deaths of their parents. Angela received the vocational call as a teenager. Her sister died without receiving the Sacraments, so Angela became a Third Order Franciscan to pray for her. She opened her home as a girls’ school for religious education. She was later inspired by a vision to start a religious community to educate young women, and founded the Ursuline Order.

The face of God God doesn’t want us to sacri�ce our own wellbeing, but does want us to willingly bring his love to other people. It can be uncomfortable being his loving face to others. This means being patient with those who annoy us, kind to those who are demanding, and forgiving to those who haven’t asked.

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips” (Proverbs

27:2).

It’s true that bad decisions can lead to sin. Try to take a formal approach to

decision making. Get all the facts. That helps you know your options. Pray. Place yourself in God’s presence and ask for his guidance.

Listen to your conscience. Your conscience is the ability within you that helps you discern right from wrong. “Moral conscience, present at the heart of the person, enjoins him … to do good and to avoid evil. It also judges particular choices, approving those that are good and denouncing those that are evil.” (CCC #1777) Choose to do the right thing, choose to follow your conscience. This requires courage. Ask for help. When in doubt, ask a trusted advisor. Be accountable. Take responsibility for any decisions you make and for their consequences. Although blaming others in some cases is justi�ed, it usually is not productive. Admit mistakes. Learn from mistakes you make and apply what you have learned to future situations. Don’t get thrown by errors. Continue to persevere, despite setbacks.

Jan. 1 – Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. Today, we honor Mary, but also Jesus as God. In their honor, pray a Rosary. Because this feast day is on a Monday, Mass attendance is optional (but encouraged) this year. Jan. 25 – The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle (1st Century). Setting out for Damascus to carry on the persecution of the Christians, he encountered Christ (Acts 9:1-19; 22:5-16; 26:12-18) while on the road to Damascus. He was struck blind from

the experience until he was baptized by Ananias three days later. He converted and began preaching the faith as he travelled around the Mediterranean. Jan. 26 – Sts. Timothy and Titus (1st Century). Timothy was a convert of St. Paul’s and later became his trusted friend, joining him in apostolic work. He was with Paul at the founding of the Church in Corinth. Titus, also a friend of Paul’s, served the early Church as a peacemaker and administrator to a community on Crete.

All Christians are called to holiness. “Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). There are three tools on which every Catholic can rely to attain greater holiness. Daily prayer. God meets us in a very real and present way when we come to him in prayer. Start in the morning and pray throughout the day. Weekly Mass. The Mass is a sacri�ce and a meal. We receive Jesus’ body and blood as real food for our souls. He said, “For my �esh is food indeed, and my blood is

drink indeed. He who eats my �esh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (John 6:55-56). That’s why we call it,

“Communion.” Monthly Confession. Jesus created the

Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession) because he knew we would

stray. He also knew we would want to come back. Frequent participation in this Sacrament

sharpens our sense of sin, holds us accountable for our errors, and gives us the grace to keep trying for

holiness.

Mark 1:21-28, God’s authority is not a formality

In this Gospel passage, Jesus and his apostles entered the synagogue at Capernaum where Jesus taught those gathered for the Sabbath. It was customary for learned teachers to say, “Thus says the Lord…” Instead Jesus said, “I say to you …” He taught as one who spoke with the authority of God. His calm authority astounded Jesus’ listeners. Just as they began to wonder what it meant, he gave them a sign. He further demonstrated his authority by performing an exorcism. Spirits that bedeviled an unfortunate man at the

synagogue recognized who Jesus was. They were forced to obey him

when he commanded them to depart, despite their

reluctance. In fact, God’s power and authority isn’t just a formality. What God says, happens.

Our kind and gentle Savior is also our powerful

and awesome Lord. As the Second Person of the Trinity, Jesus has supreme majesty and we will one day appear before him to be judged. Yes, he is our divine savior and mediator. But if we say, “Jesus is Lord,” then we give him our loyalty and obedience.

¿Por qué celebran los católicos la Epifanía?

En la �esta de la Epifanía recordamos la adoración a Jesús por parte de unos magos que habían viajado “desde Oriente”. Buscaban al recién nacido rey de los judíos, aunque ellos no eran judíos. “Su venida signi�ca que los gentiles pueden

descubrir a Jesús y adorarle como Hijo de Dios y Salvador del Mundo”

(Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, #528). La Epifanía celebra la revelación del Mesías a los gentiles (es decir, a los no judíos) y al resto del mundo.

Cuando piensen en sus propósitos de Año Nuevo, ¿por qué no hacen este año un cambio en su vida que los acerque a Dios? Tengan en cuenta estas experiencias de otros católicos para reforzar su vida de oración, conocer mejor su fe o servir a su parroquia. Greg rezaba siempre igual, se aburría y necesitaba un cambio. Su sacerdote le sugirió que hiciera una novena, nueve días de oración centrada. Greg eligió una novena a la Inmaculada Concepción. Le gustaban las meditaciones y se sentía unido a Nuestra Señora. Pronto se a�cionó a las novenas. Y de nuevo le emocionaba pasar tiempo en oración. El esposo de Jennifer no es católico y le hace muchas preguntas sobre su fe. La

educación religiosa de Jennifer terminó hace muchos años y se sentía consternada cuando no podía contestar

las preguntas de su esposo. Al enterarse de que en su

parroquia se daban clases de formación en la fe para adultos, Jenn aprovechó la ocasión de aprender más. “Todo lo que descubro me ayuda a reforzar mi fe”, declaró Jennifer. “Estoy tan

entusiasmada por lo que estoy aprendiendo que mi

esposo quiere venir también a clase”. Los niños de Maureen ya son mayores y viven solos,

pero ella sigue dando clases de educación religiosa en

su parroquia. “No hay mejor forma de evangelizar que compartir nuestra fe con los niños. En este campo yo puedo contribuir positivamente”.

Santa Ángela Merici Nacida en Italia, santa Ángela y su

hermana fueron educadas por un tío tras la muerte de sus padres. Ángela sintió la llamada de la vocación cuando era adolescente. Al morir su hermana sin recibir los sacramentos, Ángela se hizo franciscana terciaria para rezar por ella. Convirtió su hogar en una escuela de educación religiosa para niñas. Más tarde fue inspirada por una visión y fundó una comunidad religiosa para educar a las jóvenes, que se convirtió en la orden de las Ursulinas.

El rostro de Dios Dios no quiere que sacri�quemos nuestro propio bienestar, sino que por nuestra propia voluntad llevemos su amor a los demás. A veces puede resultar incómodo ser su rostro amante frente a otras personas. Esto implica ser paciente con los que nos molestan, ser amable con las exigencias de la gente y perdonar a los que no nos lo han pedido.

“Que otro te alabe y no tu propia boca, que sea un extraño y no tus labios”

(Proverbios 27:2).

Es verdad que las malas decisiones pueden conducir al pecado. Use el siguiente sistema cada vez que tome una decisión.

Entérese bien. Sabrá de qué opciones dispone si posee toda la información.

Rece. Póngase en la presencia de Dios y pídale que lo guíe.

Escuche a su conciencia. La conciencia es la habilidad que nos permite distinguir el bien del mal. “Presente en el corazón de la persona, la conciencia moral le ordena… practicar el bien y evitar el mal. Juzga también las opciones concretas aprobando las que son buenas y denunciando las que son malas” (CIC, #1777). Elija hacer el bien, elija obedecer a su conciencia. Esto requiere valentía. Pida ayuda. Cuando tenga dudas, pida el consejo de alguien en quien confíe. Sea responsable. Asuma la responsabilidad de sus decisiones y de las consecuencias que acarreen. Aunque en algunos casos esté justi�cado culpar a otros, por lo general es contraproducente. Admita sus errores. Aprenda de los errores que cometa y aplique lo que aprende a situaciones futuras. No se deje abatir por los errores. Persevere a pesar de los contratiempos.

1 de enero – Solemnidad de la Virgen María, Madre de Dios. Hoy celebramos a María, pero también a Jesús como Dios. En su honor rezamos el rosario. Como este año la �esta cae en lunes, la asistencia a misa es optativa (aunque recomendada). 25 de enero – Conversión del apóstol san Pablo (siglo I). Cuando se dirigía a Damasco para perseguir a los cristianos se encontró con Cristo (Hechos de los Apóstoles 9:1-19; 22:5-16; 26:12-18) en el camino de Damasco. Perdió la vista a raíz de este encuentro, pero la recuperó tres

días más tarde al ser bautizado por Ananías. Se convirtió y empezó a predicar la fe viajando por el Mediterráneo. 26 de enero – Santos Timoteo y Tito (siglo I). Timoteo se convirtió gracias a san Pablo y más tarde fue su mejor amigo, acompañándolo en su misión apostólica. Estuvo con Pablo durante el establecimiento de la Iglesia en Corinto. Tito, amigo también de Pablo, sirvió en la Iglesia primitiva como paci�cador y administrador de una comunidad en Creta.

Todos los cristianos son llamados a la santidad. “Sean perfectos como es perfecto su Padre celestial” (Mateo 5:48). Hay tres herramientas en las que cada católico puede con�ar para alcanzar mayor santidad. La oración diaria. Dios se encuentra con nosotros de forma real y presente cuando acudimos a él en la oración. Empiecen por la mañana y recen a lo largo del día. La misa semanal. La misa es un sacri�cio y un festín. Recibimos el cuerpo y la sangre de Jesús como alimento real para nuestra alma. Nos dijo: “Porque mi

carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre verdadera bebida. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en mí y yo en él” (Juan

6:55-56). Por eso lo llamamos “comunión”. La confesión mensual. Jesús creó el

Sacramento de la Penitencia y de la Reconciliación (Confesión) porque sabía que nos extraviaríamos. También sabía que

querríamos volver a él. La participación frecuente en este sacramento nos agudiza el sentido del

pecado, nos pide responsabilidad por nuestros errores y nos da la gracia para seguir buscando la santidad.

Marcos 1:21-28, La autoridad de Dios no es una formalidad

En este pasaje evangélico, Jesús y sus apóstoles entran en una sinagoga de Cafarnaún donde Jesús empieza a enseñar a los congregados para celebrar el sábado. La costumbre era que los eruditos que enseñaban dijeran: “Así dice el Señor…” Jesús, en cambio, decía: “Yo les digo…”. Enseñaba como alguien que hablaba con la autoridad de Dios. Su autoridad tranquila asombraba a los que escuchaban a Jesús. Cuando se preguntaban qué quería decir, les daba una señal. Más tarde demostró su autoridad realizando un exorcismo. Los espíritus

inmundos que se habían apoderado de un pobre hombre reconocieron

quién era Jesús. Se vieron forzados a obedecerlo a desgana cuando

les ordenó que salieran del hombre. El poder y la autoridad de Dios no son una mera formalidad. Sucede lo

que Dios ordena. Nuestro dulce y amable

Salvador es también nuestro poderoso e imponente Señor. Como

segunda persona de la Trinidad, Jesús tiene majestad suprema y un día apareceremos ante él para ser juzgados. Sí, es nuestro divino salvador y mediador. Pero si decimos “Jesús es el Señor” le debemos lealtad y obediencia.
