A 2-hour flight from Perth (not included) will have you touching down in

Paraburdoo, a small community in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The photo tour starts with us jumping in to our 2x 4WD Land Cruiser Prados

and heading towards the luxurious ‘Karijini Eco Retreat’. While it’s normally

only a 2-hour transit, we know you’ll be itching to photograph this dramatic

and vibrant landscape, so we’ll take our time and make as many stops as you’d

like along the way.

We’ll arrive at the Karijini Eco Retreat in time for a wonderful lunch chosen

from their gourmet, seasonal menu. The retreat is ideally located in the

depths of the breathtaking Karijini National Park and is the only permanent

accommodation within the park. We’ll be spending the next four nights here

in our luxury tents with ensuite bathroom facilities.

After settling in, this afternoon we’ll drive to a lookout near Joffre Falls for our

first sunset shoot. This will be a great introductory shoot so we’ll take our

time helping you work with the natural beauty of this stunning gorge and

surrounding landscapes, experiment with HDR etc.

Especially impressive after rain, this spectacular curved waterfall can

form a natural amphitheater with water cascading down over the

layered red and black rock walls. After the lookout we’ll walk to the top

of the falls where you’ll be able to take some slow shutter-speed photos

of the smaller cascades as the light turns golden making the red rocks

come alive.

When we’re all done, we’ll head back to the retreat for dinner where a

wonderful alfresco dining experience will be ready and waiting. We know

that photographing star trails and the Milky Way is high on everyone’s

photography bucket list – especially in the famously clear, dark skies

out here. Rest assured we’ll be keeping an eye out for a perfect night

while at Karijini, and will help you with the camera settings and the post

processing needed to capture some amazing night shots - stars, the

milky way, and even curving star trails.

ITINERARY

Day 1: To Karijini - Joffre Falls

Day 2 :Karijini - Kalamina & Hemersley


This morning we’ll depart early to reach Kalamina Gorge for sunrise.

Making our way into the gorge in the dark, we’ll be in the best position

to shoot the towering red cliffs and cascade of waterfalls just as they

become bathed in the golden morning light. After sunrise we’ll head

back to the retreat for a hearty cooked breakfast before giving you

some time off to go through some of your photos.

After another gourmet lunch we’ll set off for the famous Hemersley

Gorge. A 1km-walking trail leads us to a large, tranquil rockpool fed by a

waterfall, beautifully framed by the strikingly layered, iron ore rich rock

walls. Anyone keen for a swim? On the way back to camp, we’ll stop at

Oxer lookout, an awesome vantage point that reveals the true grandeur

and scale of this landscape, providing unrivalled views out over the

junctions of Weano, Red, Hancock and Joffre Gorges, as well as more

tiers of banded iron ore formations framing a pool at the base. After

the golden lighting and sunset fades, we’ll head back to the retreat for

dinner.

Another early morning departure (you guessed it!) will have us making our way to Weano Gorge for sunrise. A short walk down concreted steps will take

us to the bottom of the gorge where a large pool will then reflect the brilliant red rocks and snappy gum trees as the morning sun brings the colours to

life. Continuing further along the gorge as it starts to narrow, we’ll encounter a series of small pools as the walls of the red gorge tower above us. Here

we’ll be able to use some long shutter speeds to capture photos of the waterfalls flowing over the rocks. A picnic breakfast will top it off before returning

to the lodge mid-morning.

After lunch we’ll run an Adobe Lightroom photo editing tutorial before returning to Joffre Falls in the afternoon. This time, however, we’ll view it from

the vantage point on the other side of the gorge. It’s only a short walk from your tents to this lookout and this is a great opportunity to look for macro

shots of wildflowers, back-lit leaves and textures on trees. This is also a chance for the more energetic among us to walk to the pool at the base of Joffre

falls while others slowly make their way back to the retreat, photographing the huge red termite mounds and white snappy gum trees glowing of the

afternoon light along the way.

Day 3: Karijini - Weano Gorge


While we’re in this spectacular location we have to make the most of it, so yes, we’ll be up early again this morning for our sunrise photography shoot at

Fern Tree pool and Fortescue Falls in Dales Gorge. Here the vibrant green ferns flank azure streams, tranquil pools and permanently cascading waterfalls,

all contrasted against the red cliffs in the background. It’s stunning! After a picnic breakfast you’ll have the option of taking the beautiful walk down

through the gorge to Circular Pool. Along the way you’ll see giant fig trees with their roots cascading over the terraced rock faces and be rewarded with

a cool swim in the Circular Pool oasis at the end! On our way back to the retreat we’ll visit the new Karijini Visitors Centre.

It’s our last afternoon here in Karijini National Park so as the golden lighting of sunset approaches, we’ll be driving out towards Mt Bruce to capture some

iconic ‘Australian Outback’ landscape shots. The outback here offers a huge array of photography opportunities from the back-lit snappy gum trees to

reflections in pools of water, towering termite mounds, blossoming wild flowers, Spinifex grass and, of course, the terraced red hulk of Mt Bruce (the

second highest mountain in WA) and the Hamersley Ranges.

Day 4: Karijini - Fern Tree Pool & Circular Pool


This morning we’ll be driving back to Parraburdoo where our private Cessna Caravan jet prop will be ready and waiting to take us on our 1hr 45min

flight to Exmouth (saving us two days of 4WD’ing!). This incredible flight over the spectacularly patterned Pilbara landscape really is a highlight! There’s

room for everyone to have a window seat, and with big windows to shoot through it’s a great aerial photography opportunity (use your polarising filter

if you have one) as the red rocks and mountain ranges slowly turn to a kaleidoscope of turquoise pools, azure water and white sand.

We’ll land in Exmouth and be picked up by Dave from Ningaloo Safari Tours who’ll drive us to Cape Range National Park while stopping for lunch along

the way. We’ll also keep an eye out for any Emus, Bustards, Galas, Kestrels, Osprey or Eagles we might be able to photograph. By the afternoon we’ll

be on his boat for a short tour up Yardi Creek to photograph Ospreys and the threatened Black-footed Rock Wallaby. On the way back to town and

to check into our accomodation at Mantarays Ningaloo we’ll be looking for more wildlife and landscape photography opportunities as the golden

afternoon lighting hits the coast and the sunsets over the ocean. We’ll check into Mantarays Ningaloo, our accomodation for the next three nights and

dine at their ocean view restaurant tonight.

Day 5: Karijini to Ningaloo

Today’s experience will stay with you for the rest of your life: we’ll be

swimming with the world’s biggest fish, the spotty (and harmless) Whale

Shark! Each year Whale Sharks migrate north and Ningaloo is recognised

as the best place in Australia to swim with them. We have exclusively

charted the lodge’s 40ft vessel ‘Wave Rider’ and with the help of a spotter

plane we’ll be well placed to spot these gentle giants, so we can hop in at

just the right place to photograph them as they glide right past us! Being

such a small group, we’re all able to get into the water at the same time

with each whale shark we see, rather than having to split the group and

take it in turns like the larger groups need to.

If we’re lucky, Whale sharks may not be the only giants we get to swim with

out here. Coral Bay is also home to a resident population of Manta Rays,

the largest rays in the world, growing to an astounding to 7m across. As

Manta rays don’t possess a stinging barb like other rays do, these graceful

creatures are also totally harmless. While they can be a little shy this time

of year, it’ll still be an amazing opportunity if we can find one!

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to snorkel with

Whale Sharks. We’ll start the day with an introductory snorkel in the calm

waters of the lagoon to build your confidence and check everyone’s gear

is working well. With the help of the four crew onboard ‘Wave Rider’, even

if you have never been snorkelling before you’ll be doing it like pro by the

end of this session.

Day 6: Ningaloo - Whale Shark swim


We’ll then spend the morning on the boat, locating Whale Sharks (hopefully

several!) to snorkel with before having lunch on the way back to the lagoon.

Once back inside we’ll have another chance to snorkel the reef and spot fish,

coral and even turtles (if we’re lucky).

After a day exploring Ningaloo reef you’ll be ready to head back to Mantarays

and enjoy the afternoon in the lounge with a cool drink while you check out

your Whale Shark photos.

You’re not going to want to do anything this morning except sleep-in and

enjoy the luxury of this incredible accommodation. After one last gourmet

breaky, we’ll pack up and board our Exmouth airport transfer and your flights

home. It’ll take you weeks to go through all your amazing photos but best of

all, you’ll forever remain a better photographer thanks to all the new skills

learnt and the experience gained from these last eight unforgettable days!

Day 7: Ningaloo - Whale Shark swimYou’ll have learnt a lot during yesterday’s whale shark swim, and after

reviewing your photos, you’ll be glad we’ve gone all-out and booked you

guys a second, private trip today to do it all again! It’s a real highlight and

you’ve come a long way to experience this, and filled with confidence from

yesterday, you’ll be a pro at it today and nail some even better shots.

Then it’s back to Mantarays Ningaloo to celebrate what has been an

unforgettable tour as we dine at their oceanfront resturant one more time.

Day 8: To airport


ABOUT KARIJINI &NINGALOO

Situated in the dynamic Pilbara region of WA, the Karijini National Park is

located approximately 1400km north of Perth and around 80km’s north-

east of Tom Price. Karijini (formerly Hamersley Range) National Park

is the 2nd largest national park in WA and is ranked in the top 5 visitor

experiences for the state.

Karijini National Park is an iconic, unspoiled nature-based destination

offering a unique and diverse landscape and an unforgettable West

Australian outback experience. Karijini is famous for its dramatic creeks,

spectacular gorges and towering sheer sided chasms up to 100 metres

deep. A party led by explorer F.T. Gregory explored the area in 1861. He

named the Hamersley Range, on which the park is centred, after his good

friend Edward Hamersley.

Karijini National Park protects many different wildlife habitats, landscapes,

plants and animals of the Pilbara. Wildflowers vary with the seasons. In

the cooler months the land is covered with yellow-flowering cassias and

wattles, northern bluebells and purple mulla-mullas. After rain many plants

bloom profusely.

It is also home to a variety of birds, red kangaroos, euros, rock-wallabies,

echidnas and several bat species. Geckos, goannas, dragons, legless

lizards, pythons and other snakes are abundant. Huge termite mounds

are a feature of the landscape and the rock piles of the rare pebble mound

mouse may be found in spinifex country.

About Karijini National Park

Karijini: Autumn is the best time to visit Karijini, with warm, clear days and

cooler evenings. The average daily high temperature is 33 degrees Celsius

and the average daily low is 21 degrees Celsius.

Mantarays Ningaloo: Usually cool in the mornings with an offshore

breeze, and warm during the day. Evenings are cool and usually still. The

average daily high temperature during April is 33-degree Celsius and the

average daily low is 21 degrees Celsius.

Climate


Karijini Eco Retreat: Due to the remoteness of the park there is no

mobile phone reception. The retreat does, however, feature a payphone

and Wi-Fi connection available at reception for an extra cost.

Mantarays Ningaloo / Exmouth: There is only Telstra 4g phone

coverage in and around Exmouth / Ningarloo and even then it’s patchy.

For most of our guests the opportunity to ‘un-plug’ is a highlight, but if

there are urgent needs we always carry our satellite phone with us (for

emergencies), that you can use for an additional cost.

About Ningaloo

The World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef is one of the longest fringing

coral reefs in the world. Over 300km of unspoiled underwater paradise

stretches from Bundegi Beach near the township of Exmouth in the

north, right along the western shore of North West Cape past Coral

Bay and beyond to Red Bluff at Quobba Station in the south. Ningaloo

Reef was declared a marine park in 1987 in order to protect this

unique environment and its inhabitants. In 2011, the Ningaloo Reef

and Ningaloo Coast received UNESCO World Heritage listing with

the inception of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area. This was

largely in recognition of the fact that Ningaloo Reef is one of the most

biologically diverse marine environments on the planet, home to more

than 250 species of coral and over 500 species of fish.

Unlike most coral reefs, which are usually located well offshore,

Ningaloo Reef runs within close proximity to the shoreline. In most

places along the reef’s 300km length, coral gardens brimming with

brightly coloured tropical fish lay mere footsteps from the beach.

This makes Ningaloo Reef Australia’s most easily accessible coral reef

experience.

GETTING ORGANISEDBefore you go


The price of the tour does not include flights from your hometown to

Paraburdoo, nor your return flight back home from Exmouth

(Learmonth Airport). However, the price DOES include the private

charter flight from Karijini to Exmouth and all transfers.

Once the tour is confirmed for departure, you will need to make the

following travel arrangments:

27th April 2021, Qantaslink QF1802, departing Perth at 06.30 and arriving

in Paraburdoo at 08:15 or make arrangmnets to meet us at Paraburdoo

airport at 08:15 AM.

4th May 2021, Qantaslink QF1641, departing Exmouth (Learmonth)

at 11:25 and arriving in Perth at 13:20 or make your own arrangments

departing Exmouth.

We will only be offering one group airport pick up and drop off, if you

require any airport transfers ourside of this please let us know.

Luggage

The flight between Karijini and Ningaloo is in a 13-seater

Cessna caravan and therefore tight luggage restrictions

will apply. An estimated 20kg total per person is allowed

(this needs to include all your camera equipment,

handbags, laptops, check-in bag etc.). Once the pilot

receives the body weight of all passengers, they’ll confirm

our luggage allowance and we may be able to bring a little

more luggage.


Flights

This group is for those who’ve been on (or are about to

go on) a Chris Bray Photography Tour. This is a space

to e-meet fellow travellers, ask questions of veteran

travellers and generally get excited (or reminisce)

about the trip of a lifetime! You must be booked in to

join (or to contribute), but feel free to check it out and

read what people have said.

Physical activity and fitnessKarijini: This tour requires you to have a relatively good level of fitness,

mobility and balance – it’s not for the unfit or infirm or those who struggle to

carry their camera gear in the heat. You certainly don’t need to be a marathon

runner, however accessing some of the best photographic locations in

Karijini often involves walking down rocky staircases and along uneven paths

through the gorges, sometimes in the dark with head torches (and back up

again). The walks are of course optional, and there are sometimes possible

alternatives such as photographing birds, lizards and wildflowers in the area,

however if you choose not to join the group for the walks in the gorges we

can’t leave a guide with you on those occasions, and you won’t get as much

out of the tour. If you have a reasonable level of fitness and balance, you’ll

absolutely love the tour and be blown away by the dramatic beauty of the

gorges!

Ningaloo: Rest assured you don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to

swim with a Whale Shark, and you don’t need any snorkelling experience

either. Our crew onboard specialise in helping less confident, nervous and

less experienced swimmers into the water to swim with the Whale Sharks.

Snorkelling gear will be provided by the charter boat but you are always

welcome to bring your own if you’d prefer (providing it still fits inside the

luggage weight limit.) For those who don’t want to swim with the Whale

Sharks, there is no pressure to do so. You’ll still enjoy the experience of

being out on the boat and seeing these magnificent creatures in their

natural environment.

We reserve the right to decline guests from booking on this trip if we feel

they may not be well suited, may risk hurting themselves, or may detract

from the experience of the other guests by holding the group back.

Itinerary

This is important – upon booking we’ll provide you with a unique login for our Voyager Portal where you’ll be able to sign in and keep your details up to

date. It’s important you update your medical information including listing medications you take. We don’t mind what medication you take, but importantly

we do need this information to present to hospital staff should you be taken ill or have an accident – such information could then save your life. If you

carry any life-critical medication such as an Epipen for Anaphylaxis, it is important that you tell us where we can find it, in case you need it in an emergency.

Medical information

As mentioned we carry a satellite phone just in case we have a problem in a reception black-hole. We have been trained in remote area first aid and will

carry an extensive first aid kit, although you must bring any personal medication, which you may likely need.

In case of emergency

Karijini Eco Retreat: An environmentally friendly Retreat nestled in the heart of the world class Karijini National Park amidst the pristine bushland at

Joffre Gorge. It’s the first and only facility to offer comfortable ‘glamping’ accommodation in the Park!

Designed with the environment in mind - guests at the Karijini Eco Retreat embrace a ‘greener’ style of accommodation. The semi-permanent deluxe eco

tents incorporate eco-friendly practices, which ensure environmentally sustainable management of the natural and cultural values in one of the most

ancient landscapes on earth.

Karijini Eco Retreat minimises their impact on the environment by using solar panels for power, natural cleaning products to minimize chemicals in the

Park and by providing guests with eco-friendly soap products. They kindly ask guests to help them protect the environment by taking short showers and

flushing the toilet using the half-flush button when possible. The tents have limited power for lighting and one power outlet with sufficient power to charge

a phone/camera battery etc.

Mantarays Ningaloo: Mantarays Ningaloo is, the only resort on Sunrise Beach, is your gateway to the world heritage listed Ningaloo Reef and the Cape

Range National Park. There is 24/hr electricty, direct beach access, resturant, bar, loung and terraces, swimming pool, gymnasium, laundries and laundry

serice and internet access.

There are no laundry services (washing machines etc) at Karijini. We normally just rinse our shirts/pants when we take a shower if we need to. Some of our

previous guests have brought a scrubber bag (https://thescrubba.com.au/) and environmentally friendly laundry wash like the ‘Sea to Summit’ Biodegradable

concentrate Laundry Wash (http://www.paddypallin.com.au/sea-to-summit-liquid-laundry-wash-89ml.html) (or you can use the environmentally friendly

shampoo / liquid soap provided for you in your tents) to do a quick bit of laundry during the tour as required.

Accommodation

We can cater for just about anything. Our trips have been enjoyed by vegetarians,

gluten-free, lactose-free and many more obscure diets too, just please make

sure to let us know in advance!

Dietary requirements

All meals are provided on the tour, beverages will need to be purchased at your

own expense.

Food and Drink Smoking


While we don’t ban smoking on our tours, we generally encourage guests

not to smoke on tour if possible. Many places we visit will have smoking

bans in place. If you do choose to smoke while on tour, we just ask that you

be mindful of your fellow tour guests by smoking discreetly in designated

smoking areas away from the group, away from communal dining areas

and accommodation rooms (particularly if sharing a room with someone

else on the tour). Some of our past tour guests have actually decided to

use our tour as an opportunity to cut back on their smoking habit or quit

altogether and have seen lasting results upon returning home. Why not

give it a shot!? We’ll be cheering you on. :)

WHAT TO PACK


In terms of clothes, it’s really up to you, but keep it comfortable and practical – giving you heaps of mobility to clamber over rocks, crouch or even lay

down for those interesting angle shots. This is a practical photography tour - we’re going out there to take photos, not to be seen. Remember, packing less

clothes means more camera gear, so don’t go overboard! Ha ha.

We normally wear lightweight, zip off hiking pants and a combination of long sleeve or short sleeve hiking shirts during the day. The long sleeve and long

pants offer better protection from the sun. We recommend (and wear) a lot of ‘Craghoppers’ clothing (however there are many other great brands!). They

make tops and pants with inbuilt permanent mosquito repellent that are lightweight, durable, comfortable and even fashionable in a variety of different

colours. We also bring one warmer jacket with us for those cooler evenings, and one smart casual outfit to wear to dinner in the evenings (when we have

time to get changed!).

Snorkelling gear and beach towels will be provided, however we always try to squeeze our own mask and snorkels into our luggage because we know

they’re comfortable and fit us perfectly. This is really not necessary unless you have a favourite snorkel mask or regularly have issues finding hire gear

you’re happy with.

Clothing


Raincoat - What you prepare for won’t happen, hopefully!

Sturdy comfortable closed-in walking shoes - Perhaps consider bringing a pair of thongs, sandals or reef

shoes as well, to wear around camp during the day.

Head torch - Having a good head torch is imperative. We can’t stress enough the importance of having a quality (and preferably USB

rechargeable) head torch when walking down the gorges pre-dawn, walking to and from your tent and even lighting up your tent at night. We

use and highly recommend ‘Led Lenser’ torches, especially their USB rechargeable head torch the ‘SEO 5R’ or ‘SEO 7R’ available from www.

Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Bug Spray, Wide brimmed hat, swimmers/bathers/rashies & a mozzie/fly head net.

Camera gear- Including a tripod; a polarising filter for your wide/standard lens; a wide-angle lens; and a waterproof camera. See our

Laptop - ideally with Adobe Lightroom installed or at least some way of viewing your photos like an iPad etc.

A backup hard drive - or some way to ensure you always have 2 copies of your photos).

Power board - with in-built surge protector for charging your camera gear and laptop.

Reusable water bottle

Dry Bag - big enough to fit your camera with your wide/standard lens attached. It’s a good item to leave in your camera bag, ready to

pull out when needed.

Lightweight duffle bag - When snorkelling at Ningaloo it’s hard to keep your wetsuit, beach towel and snorkelling gear all

together, so it might be a good idea to bring a small, pack-away bag that can fit these items inside it when needed. Something like the Sea to

Summit Ultra Sil Duffel (http://www.paddypallin.com.au/sea-to-summit-ultrasil-duffle.html) or even just a canvas beach bag.

and help ensure everyone has a great time by following the below points:

Please don’t handle, feed or harass the wildlife. When viewing the wildlife

please keep noise to a minimum. Don’t surround, chase or approach the

animals too closely. Excitedly jumping around and shouting at how amazing

it is will only cause the animal to disappear, much to the annoyance of your

fellow travellers! We are here to photograph the animals, not stress them

out. We find most of our guests are wonderfully caring and sensitive towards

wildlife, but if we decide it’s best to back away or move on, please respect our

decision.

Be considerate of the other group members at all times. Share the best

vantage points.

If you’re still not convinced, then ask anyone who’s come away with us - our repeat guest rate speaks for itself: We’ve had entire tours sell-out solely

with repeat guests, and if you’d like, we can put you in touch with a guest who’s already been on the tour your considering to ask their opinion.


HOW TO BOOK


You are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of $1,000 AUD per person, per trip, for your booking to be confirmed. If your booking is made after

the due date for additional payment instalments, then the deposit, and all overdue instalments are required to confirm your booking.

If CBP accepts your booking, and once your deposit has been received, CBP will issue a booking confirmation invoice. A contract will then exist

between CBP from the date of the booking confirmation invoice. Following the initial non-refundable deposit, the final payment (balance) will be due:

6 months before departure date, and is non-refundable and non-transferable to other CBP offerings.

If any of these payments are not paid on or before their due date, CBP reserves the right to treat your booking as cancelled.

If we don’t reach minimum numbers, we reserve the right to cancel the trip and refund all payments you make to us.

CBP Voyager Club Gold members receive 10% off loyalty bonus, Silver 5%.
