What a magnificent conference in New Orleans! Great speakers, research sessions, activities, food, and new features to our conference. Thank you to Steve Hood from STR and Alleah

Crawford from East Carolina for their efforts! Your Vice President, Joy Dickerson, has written an excellent synopsis of the annual conference, so I will not rehash her note. What I will say is that I am even more excited for next year and the years to come. Steve, Alleah, and the Conference committee have “hit the ground running” for Phoenix. Let me just say that the ICHRIE conference in Phoenix will have additional new activities to add value for members. There are many people on the conference committee who have the future of ICHRIE as a priority. Twenty-twenty one is the seventy-fifth anniversary of the International Council of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Educators! In his last official action, Chris Roberts appointed Mary Jo Dolasinski as the chair of the 75th celebration. Please contact Mary Jo if you are interested in sharing input for the celebration in Washington, District of Columbia, in July 2021.

Steve Hood and I are planning a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit various lodging companies for the purpose of supporting ICHRIE in the future. There are many hotel management companies that are ‘asset light’ looking for potential management staff; our hospitality students are in high demand in many industries, not just lodging, food service, and tourism. We hope to bring these companies on board in supporting ICHRIE. To that end, I recently attended the International Food Manufacturing Association Marketing and Sales Conference in Chicago. Educators: we have opportunities to help our students find wonderful jobs in a variety of areas within food marketing! Researchers: there are prospects for interesting research opportunities.

As I reflect on our wonderful ICHRIE conference in New Orleans, I am first so grateful to have had the opportunity to reunite with my “old” friends and colleagues —and also to

meet and engage with “new” friends and colleagues. I am always amazed at how much I can learn from others, just from a simple conversation. I feel incredibly indebted to this organization for the many lifelong colleagues and friends that I have made over the years.

Educationally, there was such great information shared by our colleagues and industry partners! There is always so much to learn! Current topics of technology, sustainability, tourism trends, and industry recruitment practices were among the many topics and sessions offered. And how about those new campfire sessions? How about the new rapid research pitches? These are amazing additions to our conference offerings!

It also occurred to me that our conference is really a time of “passing the torch”—or in the case of hospitality educators—“passing the pineapple”. I noted this phrase on a Facebook post (thank you, Suzanne Bagnera) and it really is the appropriate phrase for what happens during the week of conference. For whatever reason in the universe, I’ve had about 15 different conversations this past month with a variety of people on basically the same topic. Woven through every single one of these conversations was the thread of that age-old philosophical question, “Do you view the contents of a glass of liquid

as half full or half empty?” I’m sure somewhere someone has done research on this, but I’d be interested in seeing some statistics on the levels of progress or success for individuals and companies whose core initiatives are based on the half-full mindset as compared to a half-empty approach. The differences could be staggering.

On the last day of every annual summer conference, the ICHRIE Board of Directors holds a conference planning and feedback session. With a half-full mindset, ICHRIE’s Director of Conference, Alleah Crawford, began the feedback session recognizing everyone for all the hard work and successes that occurred during the week of the New Orleans conference. To mention just a few, we applauded the efforts of the host committee led by Yvette Green, the results of this year’s Career Academy led by Catherine Curtis, the Campfire chats, the Rapid Pitch sessions, the memorable Deans’ and Directors’ program sponsored by the Culinary Institute of America, the new marketplace format, the financial contributions of our conference sponsors and ICHRIE partners along with the contributions of our keynote speakers.

After sharing the list of successes for the week, Alleah did something interesting as she opened the discussion up for feedback and ideas for next year’s conference—she asked those in attendance to share ideas for how we can make next year’s conference even better. Alleah didn’t ask for a list of how the New Orleans conference “glass” was half empty, she asked how we could make the Phoenix conference “glass” more full. She wasn’t pretending that everything that happened during the week was perfect, but was asking us to use what we learned during the week to improve next year’s experience. You could almost see the switch in mindset occur in the heads of most of those in attendance.

We plan to use this same approach in the ICHRIE office during our regular staff meetings. We have a small staff, but our staff meetings always center on how the ICHRIE staff can best support the Board of Directors in their initiatives and the twelve recommendations that came out of the Comprehensive Organizational Review (COR) that was completed last year (see https://www.chrie.org/files/___ICHRIE%20COR%20Summary%202018--FINAL.pdf for conclusions and recommendations of the COR).

The staff and the ICHRIE Board of Directors are committed to making ICHRIE the best it can be. Those serving on the ICHRIE Board of Directors are well aware of how much work is involved in their volunteer positions, but I cannot help but believe that our progress and success rates will increase exponentially if all involved have a “glass half full” mindset. It will, no doubt, be interesting. I’ll keep you posted on water levels.

Notes & News from the Board

The 2019 Annual ICHRIE summer conference and marketplace, held in fabulous New Orleans, Louisiana was a success. Hospitality educators,

researchers, and industry professionals gathered to listen and discuss over 160 stand up and poster presentations, symposia ranging from engaging online students to dark tourism, and exciting keynote addresses. This year we introduced two new opportunities to ICHRIE members, campfire sessions and Manuscript Marathon.

We enjoyed great participation in our campfire sessions. These focused on teaching fundamentals from motivation of students to online teaching. Campfire sessions are designed to encourage peer to peer exchange, be quick and focused, and provide an opportunity to discuss teaching focused ideas, concepts, and best practices. We received great feedback and are happy to announce that you will see these again in Phoenix!

Imagine going to a conference, meeting a new team of collaborators, and leaving ICHRIE with a research study and acceptance to one of our ICHRIE journals. You don’t have to imagine this possibility anymore! Manuscript Marathon had this impact for 5 new teams of researchers. Interested? Well, we received great feedback and are happy to announce that you will see Manuscript Marathon again in Phoenix!

Our general sessions and industry session were varied and engaging. In New Orleans we brought Mark Romig, President and CEO of the New Orleans Marketing Corporation; Chef Haley Bittermann, Corporate Chef for Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group; Iis Tusssyadiah, President, IFITT; Ron Mitchell, CEO, HCareers; and many more industry professionals to share their knowledge and expertise with our membership. Steve Hood, ICHRIE Director of Industry Services, and I are partnering again to give greater voice to our members though the Call for Industry Speakers. Please send the call to your industry contacts for more dynamic industry speakers in Phoenix.

A special thank you to Kathy McCarty, Kevin Anderson, Amie Grayson, Rei Ellis, and Shaina Wilson for their hard work before, during, and after the conference. Also, a special thank you to Kim Williams and Yvette Green as our local hosts! These individuals were essential to the success of the 2019 Annual ICHRIE summer conference and marketplace!

What a Great Conference!Alleah Crawford is Director of Conference for ICHRIE and Associate Professor at East Carolina University.

Greetings from the windy city of Chicago! Last week I was fortunate to attend the ICHRIE conference in New Orleans. It was nice to see

colleagues and friends from around the world in the spirit of professional development and celebrating hospitality. As your new ICHRIE Director of Education, I look forward to continuing the work my predecessor Catherine Curtis (Oklahoma State) began to implement initiatives (such as the “campfire sessions”) related to the conference and general benefits of membership. Thank you, Catherine, for all your efforts, and I look forward to continued collaboration in your new role as Secretary on the ICHRIE board.

I particularly welcomed the candid feedback from attendees related to a variety of topics, including the conference format (what works, what doesn’t, constructive ideas for the future, etc.). A common theme throughout these discussions was a desire to see ICHRIE continuously evolve to the changing needs of our members and academia as a whole. While what may have worked a decade or more ago was valid (and VERY helpful), we, as an association, must continue to evolve to the changing needs of our membership. I was inspired to hear passionate stories of what educators are doing to engage their students and industry and realized that we must strive to showcase these best practices.

In my role of Director of Education, I’m excited about the upcoming two years of my term. In the short-term, stay on the lookout for several Communique issues dedicated to innovative teaching-focused topics. Further, I look forward to engaging members of our Education Committee, as well as the Professional Development Sub-committee. In case you’re wondering, yes, you’re welcome to join either! Simply email me and I’ll provide details. I’m pleased that conversations have already begun about new programming for the next ICHRIE conference in Phoenix (22-24 July, 2020), and then Washington D.C. the following year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of ICHRIE.

Thank you for all you do to support ICHRIE and please feel free to contact me should you have questions, are looking for ways to get engaged, or have feedback.

Notes & News from the Board

What a great conference we had in New Orleans! For those long-term members, you likely noticed several new initiatives. For our

new members, you hopefully enjoyed your first experience at ICHRIE. As we continue to implement the recommendations from our members, you will see our association and our conference transforming to meet your needs.

At this year’s conference, we welcomed over 70 first-time attendees and had approximately 380 total attendees. All attendees helped make New Orleans a conference to remember. I was especially grateful to hear from our

first-time attendees that they felt welcomed by those who interacted with them at the Passport to ICHRIE, the First-time Attendees reception, and throughout the conference. Ensuring both our new and seasoned members see value in ICHRIE is a top priority of the membership committee in the coming year.

I would like to encourage every member to get involved with ICHRIE beyond our summer conference. One way to do that is to serve on one of our committees. We are currently appointing members to the committees that help shape the future of our association. If you are unsure what committees exist, be sure to consult our Bylaws. If there is a committee you think you could contribute to, reach out to the director responsible. I lead the Member Services and Development committee and would more than welcome additional members who want to help improve the value of our association to our members. However, there are many other committees detailed in our bylaws if your expertise aligns better

with those. Every member is eligible to serve in an ad-hoc role on the committees and it is a good way to get involved.

Another great way to get involved with ICHRIE throughout the year is to participate more with your federation. Over the years, our federations have continued to improve the value of belonging to ICHRIE. From monthly activities to standalone conferences, there are a lot of opportunities to network and develop as an educator or hospitality professional. Additional information about federations can be found in our Bylaws as well as at https://www.chrie.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3282.Many federations also have their own website.

Thank you all for a great conference. I look forward to another year of serving you as your Director of Member Services and Development. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

Best wishes for another great year!Eric Brown

CHRIE Communiqué 5September 2019

First of all, thank you to everyone that made the ICHRIE Conference in New Orleans such a great success.

My favorite parts were the expanded industry sessions and the new Campfire education talks. West Federation CHRIE members received several awards.

• Dennis Reynolds, University of Houston—Howard B. Meek Award, the highest individual recognition for lifetime contributions to hospitality education.

•Galen Collins, Northern Arizona University—John Wiley & Sons Award for Innovation in Teaching

• The teams of Danny Choi, Tim Kelley, Barent McCool, and Michael Doyle from Texas Tech University; Xi Leung from University of North Texas; and Billy Bai from UNLV—Conference Best Paper awards.

•Hyounae Min from Cal Poly Pomona and Hyung Jeong Kim from Washington State University—ICHRIE Research Reports Competition Winners.

It is truly my honor to be starting my second term as president of West Federation CHRIE. After my terms as president and immediate past president were over, I was asked to continue to be a board member. Which was fine with me because I can’t imagine my life without being a part of it. I have learned so much from attending conferences, presenting in multiple formats, and writing and reviewing for conferences and the ICHRIE journals. I have met the majority of people that I consider my best colleagues and friends through it. It is such a thrill to go to conferences, reconnect with friends and all my former students that are now leaders in hospitality education, and to meet all the newcomers who that will help bring us into the future. I believe strongly in the importance of West Federation CHRIE and ICHRIE. I want to continually strive to serve our members, provide meaningful educational and networking experiences, improve the organization, and contribute to the success and growth of the hospitality and tourism industry. The West Federation covers a large area but has a very active and interested group of members. Our current Board of Directors consists of:

Last year we had our annual conference in Sonoma, California hosted by California State University, East Bay. Many kudos to Conference Director, Tom Padron for everything he did to ensure that we truly experienced “Education in the Vines”. There were fantastic presentations, industry speakers, meals, plenty of time for networking, and of course, some fabulous wines. Tom even had an informal reception at his house. That’s just the type of hospitality we are known for in West Federation CHRIE.

The 2020 conference will be February 6 - 8 in Pomona, California hosted by the Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona. The theme is “A Call to Action: A Commitment to Success”. Lea Dopson and her staff and faculty are already at work to make sure we have an amazing conference. We will have sessions and meals at the college and the Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch, as well as an evening excursion to Downtown Disney. There will be room blocks at brand new Doubletree and La Quinta hotels nearby. Be on the lookout for the Call for Papers with information on our conference awards, scholarships, and all the conference arrangements. The presentation submissions will be due Sunday, October 6. By the way, this is open to all ICHRIE members, not just those from our Federation. The more, the better! We always have opportunities to join the board, assist with conference reviews and activities, and help with special projects. Please contact me at any time if you have questions or feedback. I am here to serve!

ICHRIE-SECSA Federation: The Heat is OnRuth Smith is President of SECSA Federation of ICHRIE and Associate Pofessor at Bethune-Cookman University

Southeast, Central & South American Federation News

As we commence the 2019-2020 academic year, let us go forth with vigor and passion, placing our students’ learning, engagement, and

success at the forefront of all that we do! Let me pause to acknowledge and celebrate our 176 awesome ICHRIE-SECSA Federation members who have dedicated their time and effort to hospitality and tourism education. Thank you for your service to higher education in the SECSA geographic boundaries and beyond.

Our SECSA family started the new year with an interactive and engaging membership meeting and a scrumptious NOLA cuisine lunch at the ICHRIE conference in New Orleans. It was wonderful to meet and greet our new members and welcome back our returning members. Attendees embraced the opportunities to network, discuss issues of relevance to the federation, build new relationships, and dine and socialize in an informal lunch setting.

There are several initiatives in the pipeline this year that are geared towards: • membership growth with an emphasis on (a) countries from Central and South America, (b) the Caribbean Islands, & (c) graduate students • increased participation in federation activities • increased communication • relationship building • innovative research • innovative pedagogical practices • increased attendance and participation in SECSA conferences

Stay tuned for our ‘SECSA Heat’ quarterly newsletter which will include: • Moving on Up (What’s new in your program) • I Did It (Members’ professional and personal accomplishments and milestones) • Sizzlin’ Tips (Research and Education HOT tips) • Just for the Health of It (Health & wellness tips) • Doc the Date (Important dates and announcements)

Our first SECSA Heat newsletter will be published in October. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] with any items for the categories listed above that you would like to share in the newsletter. Make your postings short, sweet, & spicy, so our readers will drop everything and read!

Nominate yourself or a colleague to be featured in the ICHRIE Communique. Please email your nominations to [email protected]. Our notable nominee for the month of September is none other than our Director of Member Services and Development, Dr. Heather Lewis, Assistant Professor at Troy University!

From the desk of Dr. Lewis…

Hello, ICHRIE-SECSA members!

I am Heather Lewis, your new Director of Member Services and Development for the ICHRIE-SECSA Federation. As a PhD. graduate student at Iowa State University, my professors expressed the importance and opportunities to be gained through joining CHRIE. It was an

easy decision for me to join CHRIE in 2014 and I’ve been an active member ever since. Through joining CHRIE, I’ve been able to present my research, network, advance my teaching, and build friendships from all over the world!

In my daily life, I serve Troy University as an Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management. I’ve been at Troy University since 2016 and have loved getting to experience true southern hospitality from living Alabama. Prior to teaching at Troy University, I lived and worked in West Virginia—as a hotel manager for six years and as a business professor at Glenville State College for three years. As a born and raised Mountaineer, West Virginia will always be “home” to me. That is where I was lucky enough to meet my husband, Onick, and his three beautiful daughters. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first child together this October. In our free time, we love to travel and make our way to the beach as often as we can.

I look forward to serving the ICHRIE-SECSA Federation members over the next two years and want to be of assistance to you. Please feel free to connect with me via email ([email protected]) should you have any questions or needs regarding your CHRIE or SECSA membership. My goal is to grow our membership in three ways: by regaining lapsed memberships, growth in our Central and South American territories, and through student memberships. If you are a faculty member with graduate students, please share the benefits of joining CHRIE and help us with our recruitment efforts. In closing, I want to see the ICHRIE-SECSA Federation be the BEST federation—so let’s join together and make it happen!

The Passing of the PineappleJennifer Forney is President of NENA Federation of ICHRIE and Program Director at University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

North East North American Federation News

Hello Members!

It was great to see everyone who made it to NOLA, but if you were not there here is an update. We had a great time at the conference in New Orleans. Several of our members represented NENA and their universities with stand up presentations, posters, and even participated in the Manuscript Marathon. We held our Federation meeting on Friday with 55 members in attendance. “Save the Date” fliers were distributed for our regional spring conference, 2020 at West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV, hosted by AJ Aluri....more details to come. Thank you to AJ, our host, and Lauren McCulligan, Director of Conferences & Events, and the rest of the conference committee for stepping up to get things started. We continued our tradition of the “passing of the pineapple” from our past president, Suzanne Bagnera,to our new president, myself!

I am pleased to join you as the new NENA Federation president. I serve as the program director at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and have been a part of ICHRIE since 2013. I was not even aware that this association existed until Clayton Barrows introduced to me a room a full of hospitality educators from universities from all over! My first interaction was at the Alligator Hour at the Waldorf Astoria. I will never forget that evening because I had the honor of meeting colleagues, I now consider friends, people who were willing to share their expertise, knowledge, best practices, and advice. I will forever be indebted to them. Now, I stand here, six years later, as your Federation President. Thank you to each of you who helped reach this point. Leading this federation requires a team, please let me introduce to you:

Immediate Past President: Suzanne Bagnera, Boston UniversityVice President: Theresa Lind, James Madison UniversitySecretary: Noel Ciscione, Stockton UniversityTreasurer: Joe Scarpelli, York CollegeDirector of Conferences and Events: Lauren McCulligan, Temple University

Director of Education: Lynsey Madison, Community College of PennsylvaniaDirector of Research: Gilpatrick Hornsby, James Madison UniversityDirector of Membership and Development: Damien Duchamp, St. Joseph’s College

Area Consultants Canada: Statia Elliot New England: Tracy Michaud Stutzman Central: Kirsten Tripodi South: Berkita Bradford

This year our goal is to listen to our members and ensure that we are adding value to their membership and creating opportunities for members to be engaged. That extends beyond the regional and national conferences. Damien Duchamp, Director of Membership and Development states, “one of the hardest parts of being in the membership business is that you have to make sure the value is consistent with cost. The membership team of NENA is committed to increasing the communication between members in our federation, creating new benefits for members.”

Another goal for the federation leadership this year is to not only create value with our membership but to increase membership as well. Damien and his team of area consultants will be hard at work exploring different target markets specifically more secondary educators. Our membership team and federation leadership welcomes any ideas and suggestions as we build membership, member engagement, and value.

Please check your email in the coming weeks for a membership survey. We cannot address the needs, desires, and/or issues of the members if we are not aware, so I urge you to participate.

Effective leadership requires a team of people who are willing to go above and beyond every day for the people they serve, of course in hospitality that requires a little pineapple passion. At NENA, we have an amazing team who is ready to serve the members. If you have any suggestions, or want to get involved, contact me, Jennifer Forney, at [email protected]. I look forward to serving you this year! Remember to follow us on social media to stay updated. As always, #pineapplepassion!

Articles Continued

Needless to say, fostering these connections with lodging, foodservice, tourism, and other allied industries will continue to be of importance in the years to come, and each of us can play a role.

As the ICHRIE conference committee considers site selection for the future, we are faced with the additional challenge of the new law by the California state legislature preventing California state employees from traveling to any state that has enacted a law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. This is disappointing for a number of locations that would be attractive to our membership, especially Nashville. I have asked Amit Sharma to chair an AdHoc committee to address diversity, gender issues, and woman in leadership within ICHRIE; ICHRIE will not consider the ten states banned by the California legislature. While this may be a contentious issue for some, the hospitality industry is one that supports people of all sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. For that reason, ICHRIE must reflect the industry and consider the broader point. ICHRIE’s Conference committee is considering sites for 2022 and beyond as a result of the COR recommendations. As we all know, times change; but for now, we will not consider cities within the ten states specified by the California legislature. Going forward, I have a vision that ICHRIE holds an annual conference in an international location.

Eta Sigma Delta is off to a great start this year; a re-constituted Board of Governors are passionate and poised to have a great 2019-2020. Chair Ruth O’Rourke is currently working on the ESD breakfast. This year, Lea Dopson, Dean at Cal Poly Pomona, has generously offered a $10,000 donation for support of that breakfast. Ruth and the BOG are currently brainstorming new locations for the breakfast this November, time permitting. Please congratulate Ruth on her recent move to JMU; all her work for ESD is on top of a new job and new residence.

Finally, Immediate Past President Chris Roberts, with the nomination committee, has developed the slate of candidates for the ICHRIE election. This is earlier than in the past, but in keeping with the COR recommendation for earlier elections, giving newly board members time to learn about their new positions. The question that comes up on occasion is whether a federation board member can run for an ICHRIE board seat. The answer is yes, but if elected, must give up the federation board position.

Good luck to everyone as we start a new school year!

responsibilities: 1) the Strategic Planning Committee and discussion for the upcoming year; 2) the support to Eta Sigma Delta; and 3) the planning of the Deans and Directors meeting for 2020. With this in mind, please allow me to share some of our conference meetings and discussions on these topics.

The Strategic Planning Committee is first and foremost currently focused on the Comprehensive Organizational Review (COR). Mainly, our committee discussion was focused on the new and potential strategic partnerships that we must develop, as well as our reframing of conferencing over the next few years. The committee discussed “value propositions”, as well as the role and impact of many external factors on our organization. Your thoughts and ideas for the future of ICHRIE are welcomed and encouraged. I hope you will feel free to contact me on this topic.

The Eta Sigma Delta meeting honored our previous faculty contributors, but also ushered in a new Board of Governors. The new Board of Governors, under the leadership of Ruth O’Rourke, will guide the future of ESD. Did you know—We have 120 ESD chapters across our ICHRIE member schools! Such incredible growth since its inception in 1978! We are grateful to Ruth, the Board of Governors and the chapter advisors for moving our international honor society forward in both size and impact.

The Deans and Directors meeting has always provided me with many “ah ha” moments. This year, under the sponsorship of The Culinary Institute of America, the Deans and Directors were given many ideas to consider for post- graduation programs by Dr. Annette Graham of the CIA—Master’s in Wine Management or Food Business—or a culinary certificate from the CIA in the Napa Valley!

Further, it was such a privilege to have the New Orleans local and legendary restaurateur, Dickie Brennan, talk to us about some of the challenges and opportunities of our industry, and specifically about the restaurants of New Orleans. Thereafter, we gained insights from Virgil Holdings CEO Ron Mitchell, Sara Anderson from the National Restaurant Association, and Emilie Rafal from Credential Engine; this esteemed group talked about hospitality career development solutions for every positional level. The panel discussed ways to “match” an individual to a position, and also offered strategies to fill some of the voids that applicants may have for certain positions. So what thoughts might you have for next year’s programming?

Passing the Pineapple?? —Yes, the officers and committees have now transitioned, but each of us in the ICHRIE family has a continual responsibility to keep passing the pineapple—to pass the warmth, welcome, the excitement, new ideas, knowledge, and relationships to each other—for each other! Let’s continue to embrace the spirit of the pineapple as we work together to grow our organization.
