Choosing the right metal workbench for the job
Bench Depot
Picking the right metal workbench
• The workbench is one of the key tools in any shop
• Different metal workbenches do different things
Pick the right type of steel
• Stainless steel: Stain and rust resistant as well as a premium material for shop conditions
• Stainless steal is more expensive
• Galvanized steel: Cost effective and protects from rusting and staining thanks to zinc-based coating
You need an overhead light
• It is most common for the best workbenches to come with an overhead light
• Don’t rely on windows or natural light
• Choose between energy-saving LED bulbs and other lightbulb options
Adjustable work surface height
• Being able to adjust the height is a nice feature for work
• Each leg should have a glider to change the height
• If you will use your workbench for heavy hardware try a bench that has built in hydraulic legs
Optional storage
• Every material, such as nuts and bolts, should have storage space on your workbench
• Built in storage space is the way to go
• Most metal workbenches will allow you to have bin boxes and wire overhead shelves
Suitable for real world conditions
• What type of environment will you be working in?
• Would your workbench be safe if there was an earthquake?
• Some benches have earthquake proof ratings for overhead elements, such as lights and shelves
