• If you can’t analyze it (step 3 of quote sandwich) then choose a new quote.

• Again, if you can’t explain why the quote is important, choose a new quote.

“The Monkey’s Paw”(Conflict)• Conflict: Mr. and Mrs. White disagree about using the

second wish to bring their son back.

• Quote: “‘He has been dead ten days, and besides he – I would not tell you else, but – I could only recognize him by his clothing. If he was too terrible for you to see then, how now?’” (Jacobs 99).

• Analysis: Mr. White realizes the horrible appearance his son will have, being not only mangled by the machinery which caused his death, but also the decomposition his body will have gone through in the past ten days since he was buried. He tries to put up a fight, although not a very strong one, against his wife, but in the end he gives in and makes the second wish.

• THIS SHOWS WHY MR. WHITE DOES NOT WANT TO USE THE WISH (which directly relates to the conflict)

“The Flying Machine” (conflict)• Conflict: The Emperor wants to kill the inventor for

making the flying machine because the Emperor is scared that it will be used to destroy his city.

• Quote 1: “‘Call the executioner,’ said the Emperor” (Bradbury 434).

• Quote 2: “‘I do not fear you yourself, but I fear another man…Some other man who seeing you will have an evil face and an evil heart, and the beauty will be gone. It is this man I fear’” (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 3: “Who is to say that someday just such a man, in just such an apparatus of paper and reed, might not fly in the sky and drop huge stones upon the Great Wall of China?’” (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 3: “Who is to say that someday just such a man, in just such an apparatus of paper and reed, might not fly in the sky and drop huge stones upon the Great Wall of China?’” (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 3 Analysis: The Emperor clearly believes that someone else will see this fantastic invention and use it to bring war upon his city. The huge stones are the weapons of choice and the Emperor will take no chances, so he decides the inventor must die to protect his people.

• Quote 2: “‘I do not fear you yourself, but I fear another man…Some other man who seeing you will have an evil face and an evil heart, and the beauty will be gone. It is this man I fear’” (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 2 Analysis: The Emperor is trying to explain to the inventor that he is not afraid of him and his invention. He is more afraid of what others might do with this invention. Someone may use this invention for evil and destroy his beautiful city. Because of this fear, the Emperor decides the inventor must be killed.

“The Monkey’s Paw” (Theme)• Theme: One should be careful what he wishes for.

• Quote 1: “‘Go and get it and wish,’ cried his wife, quivering with excitement” (Jacobs 99).

• Quote 2: “‘For God’s sake don’t let it in,’ cried the old man, trembling. ‘You’re afraid of your own son,’ she cried, struggling. ‘Let me go. I’m coming, Herbert; I’m coming’” (Jacobs 100).

• Quote 3: “Unconscious of his wife’s shriek, the old man smiled faintly, put out his hands like a sightless man, and dropped, a senseless heap to the floor” (Jacobs 98).

“The Flying Machine” (Theme)• Theme: Fear can be dangerous.

• Quote 1: “‘You are merciful, Emperor.’ ‘No, not merciful,’ said the old man. Beyond the garden wall he saw the guards burning the beautiful machine of paper and reeds that smelled of the morning wind. He saw the dark smoke climb into the sky. ‘No, only very much bewildered and afraid’ (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 2: “‘Off with his head,’ said the Emperor” (Bradbury 436).

• Quote 3: “‘Burn the kite and the inventor’s body and bury their ashes together,’ said the Emperor” (Bradbury 436).
