HVAC

As much as 50% of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Making smart decisions about your home's heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort.

If your home’s equipment is 10-15 years old it is worth looking into a replacement. Consider replacing your unit with a high-efficiency unit that maximizes energy savings. Replacing your existing HVAC system with an Energy Star rated system can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

There are many factors that go into choosing the right HVAC equipment for a home. The number #1 factor that people need to keep into consideration is the size of the unit. Just because a unit is bigger, does not mean that it should be used to heat or cool your home. The lower the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER), the more energy it takes to cool the home. Too small and it won’t heat or cool properly; too large and it will waste energy and produce too much heating and cooling. Have a load calculation performed that evaluates your home’s physical and thermal characteristics. With the results of a load calculation, you and your HVAC pro can find the right sized system for your needs.

The 2nd biggest factor is who installs your high efficiency system. The new equipment must be properly installed. In fact, improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30% - costing you more on your utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment's life.

Additional Tips for Home Efficiency:

Buy for the long term: Buying a Furnace or Air Conditioner is not like buying a microwave. It is important to remember that buying high efficiency now will prevent higher energy prices in the future.

Maintain efficiency of the HVAC equipment: Heating and cooling costs can consume a significant portion of a household’s yearly budget. If you have a high-efficiency HVAC system, make sure the equipment is properly maintained and kept in good repair so that it continues to operate at its highest level of efficiency and effectiveness. This includes at least annual preventive maintenance tune-ups from an HVAC professional.

Check Ductwork: Not only is it important to have a properly sized system, you also need the right ductwork as support. Make sure your Contractor recommends ductwork that will fit properly with your new system.

Replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with new, energy-efficient models is a great start.
