Choose life to live

The story of Nain’s widow’s son was indeed the hardest story, even

harder than the story of Lazarus or Jairus’ daughter. For the widow,

death had almost broken her while still living, taking away her

husband, and then her only son. What could she do?

In the book of Deuteronomy, the Lord said, by Moses, a strange

saying “I set before you life and death, therefore choose life that

you may live, and love the Lord your God, obey His voice, and cling to Him for this is your life” (De 30: 19 – 20).

But, do I have the choice to choose life? Isn’t death a general

judgment overall of the mankind? Or, what is the meaning of

choosing life? Is it to eat, drink and enjoy the pleasures of life, as it

was said “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die”?

Really death is a cruel enemy. But the Lord had destroyed its

authority “the last enemy that will be destroyed is death”.

Then, had our enemies been destroyed? I don’t think that we think

so. Still we see many enemies around. Some see them as those

who are against him, even from his own household “a man’s

enemies will be those of his own household”. Some see them

who are different in religion or values. Some see them in the

devils. But the Lord “gave us the authority to trample on all the

power of the enemy”.

Then who is your real enemy? It is your thought, body “once we

were alienated and enemies in our minds. By wicked works”. It

is to be carnally minded “the carnal mind is enmity against

God”.

Then “choose life, that you may live”.
