Seven Rules in Choosing a Domain NamePART OF THE INFOLIST SERIES

1. Keep it short. People are less likely to remember a long name.

2. Let it say what you do. Properly chosen, the domain name can generate interest in your site. Most frequent exception is where your intended audience already knows you.

3. No punctuation. Except instances of creative use, punctuation decreases the memorability of a name.

4. Don’t steal. Using another company’s registered trademark or even a word very closely associated with another company may increase your traffic, but will be more trouble than it is worth.

5. Avoid crude or lewd references. A domain name is a marketing strategy for your business — not a childish prank. Follow the rules of professionalism that dictate good taste in business.

6. Choose a few names. Your top choice may already be taken.

7. Just do it. Whatever your Internet presence plans, choose a name and register it soon. Names are being grabbed quickly!

Remember . . .Once you register your name and start to develop a Web presence, prominently display your Internet address on

everything that you have your name on including letterhead, advertisements, and press releases.
