  • PALMER COLLECTION A collection of 4 kinds of vegetables, fruit and flowers

    The ‘Open’ Silver Challenge Cup will be awarded to the winner of The Palmer Collection.

    NOTE: The collection must include at least one vase of flowers and one

    dish of vegetables. Number in each vase/dish is optional. Examples: 3

    beetroot, 3 dahlias, 6 potatoes, 2 cucumber OR 2 aubergines, 5 asters, 5

    zinnias, 5 apples. In case of doubt, contact the Show Secretary. Space per

    exhibit 2ft6in x 2ft6in. NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED!

    ALLOTMENT COLLECTION (Open to Cholsey allotment holders only)

    A display of at least 5 kinds of vegetable, maximum of 3 per kind

    The President’s Challenge Cup, donated by Mr. C.W. Bosher, will be awarded to the winner of the Allotment Collection.

    NOTE: This will be judged on the general quality of the vegetables and the

    overall appearance of the display. Exhibits should be grown primarily for

    eating. This class is open to Cholsey Allotment holders from which the

    vegetables must come. Space per exhibit – 2ft6in x 2ft6in. NO LATE

    ENTRIES ACCEPTED!

    SECTION C ~ FLOWERS ( LOCAL CLASSES) (Open to Cholsey residents only; vases will be supplied in C2 – C6)

  • SECTION H ~ DOMESTIC PRODUCE (OPEN CLASSES) The Challenge Cup will be awarded to the person winning the most points in this section (excluding H19-25).

    The Pegasus Cup will be awarded to the winner of Class H17. The Women’s Institute Challenge Cup, donated by the Cholsey & Moulsford WI, will be awarded to the winner with the highest number of

    points in Sections H and J.

    The Robert Head Shield will be awarded to the Cholsey resident with most points over classes H19 to H25.

    NOTE: In the interests of hygiene, exhibits in any class in this section must be

    protected by a transparent plastic bag, cling film or similar. Classes H1-5

    must be covered by a cellophane top NOT a metal lid.

    SECTION H: DOMESTIC PRODUCE, RECIPE FOR CLASS H7

    Earl Grey Tea Bread (Mary Berry):

    Ingredients

    175g/6oz currants

    175g/6oz sultanas

    300ml/10fl oz strong hot Earl Grey tea

    275g/9¾oz self-raising flour

    225g/8oz light muscovado sugar

    One large free-range egg, beaten

    Butter, for greasing, plus extra to serve

    Method

    Put the currants and sultanas in a bowl and add the hot tea. Stir, cover and leave

    to soak overnight for the liquid to absorb.

    Preheat the oven to 150C/130C Fan/Gas 3½. Grease a 900g/2lb loaf tin and line

    with

    non-stick baking paper.

    Add the flour, sugar and egg to the bowl of soaked fruit (if there is a little excess

    liquid this is fine) and mix thoroughly.

    Spoon into the prepared tin and level the top. Bake for 1¾ hours, or until the cake

    is

    risen and just firm to the touch, but check it after 1¼ hours to see how it is doing.

    Leave to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes.

    Turn out the cake and remove the paper. To serve, cut into fairly thick slices and

    spread with butter.

  • SECTION K ~ FOR CHILDREN (AGED 15 YEARS AND UNDER) The Bert Baldwin Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the child living within a 6-mile radius of Cholsey and who wins the highest number of points in this

    section.

    A cup will be awarded to the child aged 8 years or younger living within a 6-mile radius of Cholsey and who wins the highest number of points in this section.

    The Buckerfield Cup will be awarded to the child aged 9 years or older living within a 6-mile radius of Cholsey and who wins the highest number of points in

    this section.

    A shield will be awarded to the winner of class K10. The Bitmead Challenge Cup will be awarded to the winner of class K19. NOTE: The Exhibitor’s age must be stated on the entry form and on the back of

    the Exhibitor’s card. Name must NOT be shown on the exhibit.

  • SECTION L ~ PHOTOGRAPHY (OPEN CLASSES) The Alice Thomas Challenge Rose Bowl will be awarded to the person winning the highest number of points in this section.

    The Members Challenge Cup will be awarded to the winner of Class L1.

    NOTE: Photographs to be printed on photo paper and mounted on a card to

    give 1" border (except L8, L9 and L10 where the mount should be appropriate

    for the size of the picture). Photographs taken with digital cameras may be

    entered.

  • SHOW RULES AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

    The Show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards contained in the Royal

    Horticultural Society’s HORTICULTURAL SHOW HANDBOOK, except where, under the

    schedule, they obviously do not apply.

    1. One free entry when you make three or more entries.

    2. An exhibitor’s card must be placed face downwards with each exhibit after staging and not

    removed from the exhibit. Every care will be taken of the exhibits, but the Committee will not be

    held responsible for loss or damage.

    3. An exhibitor may make two entries in one class. Points awarded to both entries will count

    towards the section cup. Except in classes B, D and E only the highest money prize of the two

    entries will be paid. Two people may exhibit produce from the same garden in any class but they

    may only make one entry each in such class. The Committee reserves the right to refuse entry.

    4. In Sections B, D and E, more than one money prize may be won in a class – all prize money will

    count towards the total for the Banksian Medal.

    5. The marquee will be open for staging at 8.00 a.m. on the day of the Show and staging must

    be completed by 10.45 am. Exhibits must not be removed before 4.30 pm (and not later than

    5pm). Any entries in the Marquee after 5pm may be sold unless specified on the exhibit card

    NOT FOR AUCTION.

    6. Collections of vegetables are to be staged on a space of 2’6 x 2’6.

    7a. All exhibits must be grown in the exhibitor’s garden or allotment up to & including Section E.

    All other exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor & not previously shown in the Society’s Shows.

    7b. Class J4—Dressmakers dummies may be used to display items, as long as the item is within size

    allowed – 2’ x 2’.

    8. The Committee reserves the right to inspect any exhibitor’s garden or allotment.

    9. Exhibitors in the Vegetable and Domestic Produce Sections must provide their own display

    vessels unless otherwise specified.

    10. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. sharp! The decision of the judges shall be final.

    11. The judges may withhold prizes where they consider that the entries do not merit awards.

    12. No person other than those appointed by the Committee may be in the Marquee during judging.

    13. Points will be awarded as follows: 1st – 3 points; 2nd – 2 points; 3rd – 1 point except for

    collections of vegetables, where points will be 1st – 6 points; 2nd – 4 points; and 3rd – 2 points.

    14. All Challenge Cups are perpetual and cannot be won outright, but must be competed for each

    year. The holders are responsible for the safe keeping of the cups and must return them in good

    order not later than the last week of July.

    15. An announcement during the afternoon will be made regarding distribution of prizes.

    16. "Novice” in Section A and F means a person who has not yet achieved more than two "First

    Prizes" in these sections at a previous Cholsey Show.

    17. Notice of objections to any exhibitor or exhibit must be made in writing and handed to the Show

    Secretary not later than 3 pm on the day of the Show. It must be accompanied by a deposit of £5.00

    which will be repaid if the objection is upheld.

    18. In classes where vases are not provided, a “vase” means any container of which the height is

    greater than the diameter at the top; a “bowl” is one of which the diameter at the top is not less than

    the height.

    19. The Committee reserves the right to settle any dispute in such a manner as it may decide and

    such decisions shall be final.

    In order to increase the interest of the Show, exhibitors are requested to attach to their entries, where

    possible, a label with the name of the variety being exhibited.
