Prayer for the Family Meal 7 Fresh Ideas for Mealtime Prayer
Committing to gathering regularly, if not daily, for a shared meal is a great way to strengthen your family and to learn how to pray together. We might always say a traditional prayer. In doing so, we are also unified with our larger family, the Catholic Church, whose members have uttered the same or similar phrases for years upon years. Said thoughtfully, it resonates. Even on those days when we zip to the finish, it makes a point—God is with us, and we thank him.
But if you find prayer becoming habit over heart, there are ways to be more mindful at mealtime. Here are a few different approaches to spicing up the prayer portion of your family meals. 1. Have family members take turns leading the prayer
each day. You might start with a petition, praise to God—whatever the leader chooses.
2. Sing the traditional prayer—let your child improvise the melody.
3. Institute a moment of silence. St. Thérèse of Lisieux described prayer as “a simple look turned toward heaven.”
4. Ask each member to say one thing he or she is grateful for that day.
5. Expand on the previous exercise by having each person at the table quickly answer these questions: What are you grateful for? What do you want to ask God for? What are you sorry for today? Whom did you help?
6. Read a poem or Scripture passage that gives thanks to God. Perhaps you can even find positive lyrics in a song from pop culture to engage your children.
7. Of course, it’s always good for your children to know the standard meal blessings.

Saint Andrew, the Apostle (5 B.C. - 60 A.D.)- November 30
Saint Andrew was the first-called apostle and was the brother to St. Peter. He was born in a village on the Sea of Galilee. Like his younger brother, Simon Peter, he was a fisher-man. His very name means strong and he was known for having good social skills. It is believed he was one of the
closer disciples to Jesus. It was Andrew who told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes, according to John 6:8. After Pentecost, Andrew went on to preach the Good News around the shores of the Black Sea and throughout what is now known as Greece and Turkey. He was martyred by crucifixion in Patras. St. Andrew was bound, rather than nailed, to a cross. He was crucified on an X-shaped cross or a “saltire.” This was his request because he deemed himself “unworthy to be crucified on the same type of cross as Jesus.” St. Andrew’s Cross is featured on the flag of Scot-land. Like him, may we encourage others to “come and see” Jesus by our word and example.
The Adult Faith Formation is beginning a 31 Club to pray for vocations. We need prayer warriors who are willing to donate 1 hour each month to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and also for young people to find their vocation in life. The procedure is simple: simply sign up on the table facing the chapel and commit yourself to an hour of prayer on the same day each month. Choose 12 if that is your birthday and you can easily remember it. Choose 15, the day your Social Security check arrives. Pick any day. Simply set aside one hour that day each month and pray, either in the chapel or in your home. Prayer cards will be available near the sign-up sheets, or you may simply pray from your heart. We know that God hears and answers prayer. We know that we need men and women with vocations to continue our Catholic tradition. Won’t you commit to one hour a month?

WHY DO CATHOLIC PRIESTS WEAR BLACK?
There are several reasons Catholic priests wear black clothing called “clerics.” As in other professions, a uniform helps to identify someone. Priests want to be easily identified as clergy, not so they stand out in a crowd and gather attention for their own sake, but because they should be a sign of Jesus to the world. Wearing clerics, the black suit, symbolizes something as do most practices in our Church. The black represents a priest dying to self as well as simplicity and poverty. Every time a priest puts on his clerics, he should remember that he does not belong to himself, but to his bride, the Church. It also symbolizes simplicity and giving up the comforts, honors, and privileges of the world.
In the early Church there was no specific clothing for the ordained clergy, but by the 500’s many clergy began to wear long tunics that reached from neck to feet for two reasons—first it was warm, second it was a sign of modesty, because it was simple, not ornate, clothing. This is the beginning of the tradition of the cassock. By the middle ages, canon law proscribed clerical garb to be worn and started to regulate it. Current Canon law states: “Clerics are to wear suitable eccle-siastical garb according to the norms issued by the confer-ence of bishops and according to legitimate local customs.” So in ordinary situations, a priest should wear clerics, but, it is not required at all times.
The white Roman collar you see priests wearing symbolizes obedience to God and the Church. This comes from the gra-dation of slaves having a ring put around their necks, and priests choose to give their lives to Christ as his “slaves.” It also represents the marriage “ring” of being wed to the Church. The white also symbolizes the resurrection of Christ.
