CHINOOK is a design that acknowledges and combats the myth that exposure to the elements is what boating "fun" is all about. In fact, nothing is more miserable on the water than being too cold or too hot, or being unable to get out of a gale or driving rain storm aboard a boat. Yet surprisingly to us, there are few production boats in this size range really suitable for use in inclement weather and foul seas.

Just as surprising is the lack of production boats with really liveable, practical interiors in less than 20'. Yet our CHINOOK proves that such need not be the case. While compact in size for economy, easy trailering, and nimble handling, the cabin is truly spacious. How many boats this size can boast full sitting headroom above the berths .as well as the portable head, and full standing headroom in the pilothouse? While the arrangement can be varied to some extent to suit builder preferences, seating is generous and at window level. Visibility is full-circle, and storage space is more than ample. There's dedicated room for an ice box and hanging lockers, and we've included a drop leaf table that expands the already generous shelf area just abaft the windshield for charts, electronics, etc.

Although CHINOOK shows a closed in pilothouse by what's known in these parts as an "Alaskan bulkhead", a builder could conceivably omit the bulkhead and leave the house open to the cockpit. The only problem with such a change, however, is that because the pilothouse sole is below the cockpit sole as designed in order to achieve standing headroom, the cockpit would technically no longer be self-bailing without the bulkhead barrier. An acceptable solution would be to raise the pilothouse sole to the same level as the cockpit and accept less than standing headroom in the covered portion (approximately 10" less). However, you would gain more below-the-sole space which might appeal to anglers looking for greater space for fish and tackle boxes or bait wells. Some might want to compensate by raising the cabin sides and top accordingly, but we advise against such a change for appearance reasons and increased windage that could impair performance.
