TERM 4 MONDAY 7 OCTOBER – FRIDAY 20 DECEMBER

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome back to Term 3. We have had an excellent start to the term. This week the Year 3 students

have had a Science incursion with a scientist from the CSIRO and they conducted experiments

including Chemistry and Matter. The Year 4 students had Reptile Encounters provide a learning

session about Threatened and Endangered Species. The presenter brought various animals with him

including a black cockatoo, crocodile, sugar glider and green python. Next week the Prep, Year 1 and

Year 2 students begin their 2-week Swimming program at Aquarena. The Year 3 and 4 camps at

Anglesea are coming up in the next couple of weeks and all students are looking forward to it.

It was good to see many students and parents at the Maths Talent Quest Expo at Milgate on Monday

after school. The students worked on these Maths investigations during Term 2 and there were

amazing projects presented about their learning. A number of these will now be sent to the State Maths

Talent Quest competition. Congratulations and well done to the students, staff, Fiona Bashford and the

Maths team for coordinating and assisting. The students learnt a lot about Maths in the process of their

investigations.

The Year 3-6 House Athletics at the George Street Athletics track on Tuesday was a great success

with all students participating and enjoying the experience. From this, some students have been

selected to participate in the District Athletics competition – congratulations to everyone. Thank you to

James Will, the teachers and parents who organized and assisted on the day.

On Friday the Prep students will celebrate their first 100 days at school with a special breakfast and

celebration day. They will wear their pyjamas and enjoy breakfast together with other special activities

during the day.

LITERACY AND NUMERACY WEEK – 29 July to 2 August Next week is Literacy and Numeracy Week and at Milgate there will be a special Literacy night for the

whole school on Wednesday at 6.00-8.15 p.m. There will be lots of activities for students and an

author will be visiting and doing a presentation during the evening. (See the flyer in this WHAM for

further details) The students have all been writing poems for their Poet Trees, which will be displayed

on the night.

PARENT HELPERS REQUIRED TO CONDUCT TOE BY TOE Toe-by-Toe is a program to assist students who need extra assistance with reading. We have some

students on the program and their reading has improved as a result of the program and they are

learning skills to assist them with this. There are more students who could benefit from the program so

we are looking for parent volunteers to be trained and to work with these students. Each student has a

20-minute session three times per week. If you would be available to assist please email the school on:

[email protected] or contact the school on 9842 7744.

The name Toe by Toe was chosen to signify that a student makes progress by the tiniest steps - one

toe at a time. However, even though the steps taken are small, the student can clearly measure their

progress right from the first page. The student's confidence and self-esteem are boosted as a result.

Over 25 years of fieldwork went into the development of the system and it is this research, which

makes the method so easy to use. You don't have to be trained in any field of Education to tutor with

Toe by Toe. In fact, the manual often works better with non-professionals using it as they do not come

to the task with any pre-conceived notions and thus simply follow the very detailed instructions.

The unique syllable division employed with Toe by Toe is very easy to use though it is not the syllable

division generally used for the teaching of reading. Once the sound of a phoneme has been taught

using the 'polynons' (nonsense words), these rules can then be applied to any multi-syllabic word

and students find a whole new world of reading opening before their eyes.

No matter what the nature of the student's literacy problem, they can be taught to read using Toe by

Toe.

PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY – Monday 12 August ‘Principal for a Day’ is a Victoria wide event which provides business and community leaders with the

opportunity to experience first-hand a normal day in a government school. Each year approx. 100

people participate and ‘shadow’ the principal in the school. It’s also part of a global program and occurs

in New York, Auckland, Los Angeles and Chicago. A couple of years ago we had a strategic

development leader from the NAB in the ‘Principal for a Day’ program. This year our ‘Principal for a

Day’ visitor will be Jennifer Yang, the mayor of Manningham, on Monday 12 August. She will visit

classes, probably meet with the school and house student leaders, etc.

CURRICULUM DAY LAST WEEK Last week on Curriculum Day, staff had professional learning with Jo Fahey, from Adelaide. Jo lectures

at Flinders University and also teaches at an independent boys’ school in Adelaide. She has worked all

around the world in various schools and been a writer of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years

Program (IB PYP). She presented sessions on Inquiry Learning and linking all aspects of the

Page 4: CHINESE SPEECH CONTEST - Milgate Primary … their levels. These students (apart from Sarah who will be on school camp) will represent Milgate in the first Manningham Chinese Speech

curriculum to Inquiry and the IB PYP inquiries that students study. Staff were also involved in planning

and practical activities. This was very valuable learning for all staff.

CHINESE STUDENT VISIT Thank you to the 8 families who have volunteered to host students from our sister school when they

visit Milgate PS in October. We require at least 4 more families to volunteer as there will be 12 students

visiting. It would be good to have some more families who have students in Years 4-6 to host the

students. If you would like to host a student for 3 nights please complete the form on the school’s

website.

iPADS FOR YEARS 3 AND 5 IN 2013 AND ALSO IN 2014 This year we introduced a 1-to-1 iPad program and all students in Years 3 and 5 have their own iPads

which have been provided by parents. This program has been very successful and the use of iPads as

a tool has enhanced the learning of students each day. The iPad means that the students have the

Internet available at any time for research, for presenting their learning in different ways and using apps

to reinforce and challenge their learning. In 2014, the students will continue to use their iPads when

they go to Year 4 and 6. All students in Years 3 and 5 in 2014 will also require their own iPad to be

used in their learning. Further information about the 2014 iPad program will be sent home to parents of

students in Years 2 and 4 later in the year in readiness for next year.

PARENT SURVEY Each year the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) conducts a parent

survey across all state schools. The survey will be conducted in the next two weeks. A percentage of

parents are selected through an electronic random sort from each school. Milgate PS parents who

have been selected will receive the Parent Survey on Monday. This is a confidential survey and the

completed surveys are sent to a central organization for data collection. The school then receives the

collated data from the Parent Survey later in the year and this is used to review our programs and

practices. If you receive a survey please complete it, as your feedback is important.

International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program

(IB PYP) The Primary Years Programme: preparing students to be active

participants in a lifelong journey of learning.

Learners Constructing Meaning: How is the PYP curriculum defined?

Written curriculum: What do we want to learn? The identification of a framework of what’s worth knowing

Taught curriculum: How best will we learn? The theory and application of good classroom practice

Assessed curriculum: How will we know what we have learned? The theory and application of effective assessment

This is a model whereby all three

components inform each other.

The IB Primary Years

Programme (PYP) is a

curriculum framework that

focuses on the development

of the whole child as an

inquirer, both in the classroom

and in the world outside. It is

defined by six

transdisciplinary themes of

global significance, explored

using knowledge and skills

derived from six subject

areas, with a powerful

emphasis on inquiry-based

learning.

SIBLING ENROLMENTS 2014 To help with our planning for 2014 we would really appreciate it if you could submit any sibling

enrolments as early as possible. Receiving these enrolments now ensures our planning to retain the

best teachers and to provide the best possible start for all our Preps in 2014.

Enrolment forms are available from the Office or on our website.

HOST FAMILIES FOR CHINESE STUDENT VISIT Thank you to the families who have already offered to host a student visiting here in October from our

sister school in China. We still need a few more families to host 1 or 2 students. Your own child does

not need to be in Year 6.

Students will be interested in learning all about life in Australia, so even if you have after school activities

on these nights it will be beneficial for the students to experience all aspects of life here in Australia.

Each student will need their own bed so if you have any spare bedrooms or beds, you can host a

student. Further details are on the notice sent home last week [also available on our website homepage

in the Recent News section].

LOST PROPERTY VOLUNTEERS So often our Lost Property cupboards are literally overflowing with lost uniform and lunchbox items – it’s

hard to keep it looking respectable. We currently have one parent volunteer to help sort through all the

lost property items but we’d love to give her some more help if you’re able to spare some time. Please

send through your details to the school Office or via email [email protected].

During the term, Measurement will be one focus in Mathematics. 34B started with Mass by estimating and weighing a range of items. We discussed the fact that estimates are more accurate when there is a known weight to compare with. We were able to judge light versus heavy and order objects from lightest to heaviest.

This term, in PYP, we are also learning about the properties of materials. Last week we explored many different objects and discussed what properties we thought these objects had. We are also developing our language around this topic, utilising words such as opaque, transparent, manufactured, rigid and waterproof.

CHOCOLATE AND HERB DRIVE LAUNCH Coming home today is the pre-selection flyer for the Chocolate and Herb fundraising drive – this is the

major fundraiser for the school this year and we are hoping to raise enough funds to resurface the Prep

Courtyard. Parents are asked to nominate their preferred method of support and return the form to the

office by next Friday 2nd August.

Products will be delivered to classrooms on Friday 16th August where they can be collected by parents,

or given to children to take home (if parental approval has been given). Please feel free to order more

than one type of product if you think you can sell them – perhaps one per child who attends Milgate?

MILGATE GREEN TICKET RAFFLE – WIN 2 TICKETS TO BOUNCE! As an incentive to help families sell their entire box of

chocolates or bag of herbs/veggies, we are running an

exclusive raffle called the ‘Milgate Green Ticket’. Each

time a complete box or bag is sold and the money is

returned to the office, the family will be given one raffle

ticket. The raffle will be drawn at assembly on Monday

16th September and the complete prize includes:

Double pass to Bounce Inc.

Double pass on a ‘Chocolate Walking Tour of Melbourne’

Private tour of the National Rhododendron Gardens with the Head Horticulturalist

$30 plant voucher for Beasley’s Nursery

Beautiful box of Ernest Hillier chocolates

This raffle was launched to the kids at assembly this week to much excitement – please note that the

only way your family has a chance to enter the raffle and win the prize is to participate in the fundraiser

as directed.

THE COPYING AND COUNTING CREW – SHORT TERM VOLUNTEER WORK The flyer for the Copying and Counting Crew mentioned in the last WHAM is coming home with students

today. Just to recap, we have decided to form a volunteer registry for parents who don’t want to attend

P&F Meetings, but who would like to help out at the school from time to time.

The Copying and Counting Crew volunteers will receive emails asking for their

assistance with the photocopying; collating; money counting and ticket distribution

for events in the second half of 2013 – namely for the Chocolate and Herb product

drive in Term 3 and the Skip-a-thon, Grease Movie night and Christmas raffle in

Term 4. The help will be required after school drop off on various mornings of the

week, typically for between ½ an hour and an hour.

If you’d like to assist and you do not receive a flyer, please feel free to add your

details to the poster on the P & F Noticeboard near the uniform shop.

DISCO THANK YOU’S I’d like to send a big thank you to all of the volunteer parents who helped out with the Disco at the end of

Term 2. The night was more than just a great fundraiser – it was a wonderful Milgate community event

enjoyed by parents and children alike. A special thank you from the P&F to it’s members Danielle

Dobson, Harveen Puri and Louisa Angeloglou for all of their work in co-ordinating the event.

At Milfete in 2012, we purchased a family portrait voucher from the Silent Auctions. Our encounter with Chris, from "Unposed Kids" was wonderful. Booking our sitting was prompt and accommodating. Chris was friendly and very professional. He worked quickly and the children were photographed in natural poses, in a beautiful park setting.

The session passed quickly with happy chatter and laughter. We were sad to have it end. The final photos presented for a viewing were excellent. We now enjoy them in our home and I appreciate his work daily. I feel very lucky to have had this experience and would confidently recommend "Unposed Kids" to others. His prices are affordable.
