Welcome to Tuttle’s 2012-’13 Academic catalog! Now in our 65th year, Tuttle is excited to continue our long tradition of bringing an ever-wider array of educational materials about Asian languages and culture to universities, schools, libraries, and families.

Our unofficial theme of 2012 was “New Friends”, and we made many in 2012. With the launch of Cornelius “Neil” Kubler’s Basic Chinese series, we enjoyed talking to hundreds of college and university professors this spring. This summer, Basic Chinese was adopted for use in the ALLEX program’s summer teacher-training program at Oregon State University, and students at more than two dozen American colleges and universities began using the series this autumn. Please write me to find out why this innovative new series is so popular.

At ACTFL this year, we are pleased once again to host the American Society of Shufa Calligraphy Education (ASSCE). The society will present calligraphy demonstrations on both Friday and Saturday at mid-day in our Booth #1024. Please visit us there to watch!

In Japanese language, we were pleased to publish Intermediate Japanese, the second level of the new series we kicked off with Beginning Japanese in 2010. The third level will be published soon, which will take students up to AP- and IB-levels of competency. Also, the long-awaited merger of the Association of Teachers of Japanese (ATJ) and the National Council of Japanese Language Teachers (NCJLT) into the AATJ created an opportunity for Tuttle to become one of their first corporate sponsors. Please see page p 11 to learn more about this dynamic new organization.

With the publication of 2011’s Tagalog for Beginners, by Joi Barrios of UC Berkeley and 2011’s Elementary Tagalog by Jiedson Domigpe of the University of Washington, Seattle, Tuttle is excited to provide students of Filipino with the most contemporary textbooks available anywhere.

Last, we are pleased again to provide our friends in the teaching and library communities with a special 35%

Academic Discount. You may purchase anything in this catalog or on our website by using the academic code ACAD35. Please see the ad on p 12 or the inside back cover for more details.

We hope you will continue to look to Tuttle as your trusted source for course-adoption materials in Asian studies and languages.

Beginning JapaneseYour Pathway to Dynamic Language Acquisition

Michael L. Kluemper Lisa Berkson Nathan Patton Nobuko Patton

more than 500 color and b&w illus & manga-style story pages, includes CD-ROM and series website

At last, a Japanese textbook that combines the popularity of manga-style illustrations that students love with the teaching goals of American educators!

In Beginning Japanese, ten extensively field-tested lessons follow the life of Kiara, an exchange student to Tokyo. With a friend’s time machine, Kiara and her friends visit various historical people, places, and events in Japan. During these visits, students learn about Japanese language, hiragana, katakana, and 148 kanji. Dialogues, images, audio files, and a companion website further teach language and culture. The intermediate level teaches another 149 additional kanji, for a cumulative total of 300 kanji. The third level will take students up to AP- and IB-level proficiency. It’s the only series designed to do so.

SERIES INCLUDES:

• An engaging manga-style time-travel narrative incorporates Japanese cultureº and history.

• Content is designed to help students attain the levels they need to reach in order to succeed on the Japanese AP exam and IB exams.

• A single, affordable workbook. Free audio disc.

• Authentic written, visual, and oral materials are embedded naturally throughout the book.

• Technology is used extensively for authentic tasks with extra guidance for teachers on how to utilize suggested technology.

• Free Teacher’s Resource, classroom materials, and Facebook opportunities for students outside of the classroom.

The narrative story underlying the textbook follows the life of Kiara, who has just moved to Tokyo as an exchange student. Kiara, Ben, and Kenichi get caught in a storm and end up in Tomo’s time machine, through which they visit firsthand various historical and other famous events, places, and people (such as the 1274 attack by Kublikan and the famous kamikaze winds that defeated the invasion; the town of Kurashiki, where our characters encounter ninja and learn about the parts of a house; and Edo Bay in the 1850s, where they witness the arrival of Commander Perry and his “black ships”). These historical and cultural experiences are made even more real for the learner through the textbook dialogues, images, and CD-ROM audio and text files.
