Climate & When To GoChina is such a vast country containing so many different climatic zones that there is generally no bad time to visit the country although this does depend on where your trip will be focused. In general however the following rules apply.

Winter MonthsIt is very cold in the North of China, the Western provinces and Tibet. In the south of China it tends to be mild with little rain and so is not a bad time to visit those areas. If you do also include the North in your winter trip the Harbin Ice Festival that runs through January into February is a must see!

SpringA good time to visit much of China. April is probably the best month with the best of spring in the popular northern destinations of Beijing and Xian and still pre-summer heat in the lush South of China.

SummerBy June it is hot almost everywhere except Tibet and other higher altitude destinations. It can rain a lot over much of Central and Southern China. However, this is when many people visit and it doesn’t seem to spoil people’s enjoyment of China.

AutumnGenerally regarded to be the best time for almost all of China with dry sunny weather and comfortable temperatures common from North to South. The second half of October is perhaps the choicest time.

China planning tip! If possible try and travel outside of your country’s school holidays as international flight prices will

often be considerably lower.

Best time to go ...You will find the best all round weather conditions in April and May as well as the September to October period stretching into early November. A comfortable climate and the best chance of clear skies.

... and when to avoid! We’d be tempted to say the very height of summer or the depths of winter but China has a lot to offer during these periods. The only real time to avoid is the first week of October which is a National Holiday across China and all popular sights become hugely busy with local tourists - and when we say busy we are talking 1.3 billion population busy!

Transport Options & Getting Around

Overnight trainsWe try to include at least one overnight train journey on our China trips as we feel that they are an essential and exciting part of any China trip and , of course, they help lower costs and are often an efficient use of time. We almost always use the 4 berth soft sleeper compartments with lockable doors and plenty of luggage room. On request we can buy out additional berths in a cabin giving you sole occupancy of that cabin. Standards on Chinese trains are good and constantly improving.

Bullet trainsChina has been expanding its bullet train routes at an extraordinary pace in recent years with a new line opening up every few months. What used to be an overnight train trip can often be done in a matter of hours with total travel time becoming comparable to flying the same route. We are Increasingly including bullet train routes into our trips and expect this trend to continue. The trains themselves are good value and even second class is more comfortable than an economy flight.

River CruisesThere are two popular cruise routes in China. The first is the famous 3 to 7 night Yangtze River Cruises to and from Chongqing to either Yichang or all the way to Shanghai with several stops for day trips along the way. The second is the day cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo which passes through some of China’s most beautiful and iconic scenery finishing in relaxed and beautiful Yangshuo. Both these routes are extremely popular with one or both appearing on many itineraries.

Internal flightsChina is a huge country and for most people getting between the main destinations will involve flying. The good news is that most of China’s airports are recently built and the aircraft fleets consist of new Boeings and Airbuses with high safety standards. Most destinations tend to have at least one daily flight with the major destinations having a dozen or more departing throughout the day.

Accommodation Options In China

Chinese Star RatingsThe hotel star rating system in China can be quite inconsistent with 5* hotels sometimes being not as good as a decent 3* hotel and vice versa. Consequently, local knowledge and having actually visited the hotels is hugely useful in order to make the right decisions. This is something we spend a lot of (quite dull!) time doing on our regular trips to China as it is essential to look beyond the superficial star rating.

Where to StartMaking the right hotel selection for your trip is vital in ensuring the trip goes smoothly and a great hotel selection can really enhance the overall enjoyment of your trip!

There are a bewildering number of hotels in China but only a relatively small number which are either foreign traveller friendly or used to dealing with the foreign tourists. What look like good hotels may not be in suitable locations. Then there is the added concern in China of inconsistent star rating with many 4 and 5* hotels not living up to their ratings in reality.

Consequently, it is well worth the time to do some research or at least use an agent that has already done the legwork for you.

Location, Location, Location...Chinese cities are vast sprawling affairs with populations of 10 million plus common. This makes the location of hotels hugely important to the enjoyment of your trip. There are a lot of itineraries out there that will be jam packed with 5* hotels but on closer inspection these hotels are often far from the areas you want to be. Our approach is the location is king and we make sure we only use hotels located exactly where you want to be located.

Traditional & Boutique Style HotelsThe vast majority of hotels in China are functional, modern and often part of local or international chains whose standards are good. However, where we can we prefer to use hotels of character and there are a growing amount of hotels built in the Chinese Traditional Style which are of high standard and are far more of a memorable experience leaving you in no doubt that you are in China! Do let us know if you prefer this type of hotel over the modern variety.

StyleTraditional

China planning tip! It is well worth checking any hotels proposed to you on review sites such as TripAdvisor to get a

good all round view of people’s opinions.

China’s Most Popular Destinations

Beijing

Beijing 北京Beijing is not only the capital of the PRC but also one of it's premiere attractions for the traveller. Considered to be rapidly becoming one of the 21st Century world cities it also hosts a wealth of historical sites and thankfully, much of the historical side has survived the construction boom of the last decade. In short, Beijing has it all - rich historical sights, modern masterpieces, fantastic cuisine and a vibrant culture with one foot in the past and the other firmly striding into the future.

Xian

Xian 西安 Many centuries ago Xian was once the fabled Chang An - a thriving city

of Emperors, soldiers, art and culture and the capital of the Tang Dynasty, regarded as a golden period in Chinese history. It was also one of the world's great trading cities being both the beginning and end of the fabled Silk Road. It is all this history that people come to see today and Xian still has much in evidence of this glorious past, including one

of China's most famous sights - the breathtaking Terra-cotta Army.

Chengdu 成都With a population topping 13 million and growing (the fifth most populous city in China) Chengdu is the capital of mountainous Sichuan province and the place to come to to see Giant Pandas. The city does have charm beyond Pandas though, the people are friendly and the food excellent making Chengdu and easy place to spend a few days. It is also a natural base for exploring more of Sichuan including nearby Leshan and Emeishan as well as the further afield Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou.

Shanghai 上海Shanghai aims to be a vision of China's future and is hurtling

towards it's goal of being China's financial capital and eclipsing its rival Hong Kong. There are few cities in China that are such a

testament to China's phenomenal growth of the last few decades and what it perhaps lacks in historical sites it more than makes up

with its sheer energy and dynamism giving you a taste of the New China that is making it's mark on the world stage.

China’s Most Popular Destinations

Yangtze River 江长The Yangtze is Asia's longest river and the third longest in the world. A cruise along part of it offers the spectacular Three Gorges whose sheer height seems little effected by the rising waters of the dam of the same name. The dam itself seems almost as monumental and passing through it's great locks has become an unforgettable part of any Yangtze river cruise. There are several stops along the river route to visit historical sights all in all making this one of China's premiere attractions.

Guilin & Yangshuo 桂林Once in China it is likely you will see Guilin frequently as it is on the back of the RMB 20 note! Most people come to Guilin to take a trip

down the Li River to Yangshuo, a destination firmly on the top 10 list of places to visit in China. The surrounding limestone karst scenery is as

breathtaking as the life along the river banks is fascinating. Yangshuo is the perfect place to take all of this in with it's relaxed atmosphere and

easy access to the surrounding countryside by foot, boat or bicycle.

Lijiang 丽江市Lijiang is a stunning old UNESCO World Heritage recognised city of cobbled streets and tiled roofs set against the magnificent backdrop of the 5,596m thirteen peaked Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. All this wrapped up in one destination means Lijiang is crowded with visitors year round but it still has what it takes with quiet streets off the main tourist paths and continues to be an unmissable part of any Yunnan itinerary.

Hong Kong 香港Hong Kong is still a mecca for travellers and for good reason. Still very distinct from Mainland China this city state is often a start or end point for a trip to China. Aside from having one of the worlds

most impressive skylines (pictured left) Hong Kong also offers fine food, vibrant nightlife, world class shopping and tranquil islands dotted with timeless temples and fishing harbours. All this but a

stone's throw from the Central business areas.Hong Kong

... And Some Less Visited Gems

Mount Huangshan 黄⼭山If you can be on this mountain in the right weather conditions you will come away like many an ancient Chinese poet and painter feeling you have seen one of China's top sites. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Huangshan offers you the scenery seen in so many traditional Chinese paintings with the tops of peaks seemingly floating above cloud seas. Much of the mountain area is accessible thanks to up to 60,000 stone steps although some of the paths are not for those who have issues with heights!

Hangzhou 杭州At first glance Hangzhou looks like a huge modern urban expanse like so

many east coast Chinese cities but it has one trump card, the stunning West Lake, the legendary beauty of which has been praised and written

about for centuries. A few days exploring the West Lake area and National Park are highly rewarding taking time to relax in the many

gardens and pavilions. A relative stone's thrown from Shanghai and at the southern end of the Grand Canal finding time to fit in Hangzhou's

ancient pagodas and misty lake views is unlikely to disappoint.

Lhasa 拉萨Lhasa, capital of Tibet province, is an astonishing city and a must see in China if you are able to visit the spiritual land of Tibet. The setting, the history, architecture and the contrasts all make a trip here well worth the time, expense and relative discomfort of high altitude. Tibet is rarely out of the news and much of it is controversial but it really is one of these places you need to come and see yourself to make your own mind up. If you come here try to find extra time for one of our more extensive Tibet trips.

Pingyao 平遥Pingyao is a Ming Dynasty city with the only complete city wall of that

era left in China. Centuries ago it was the centre of Chinese banking and this wealth has left an abundance of Ming architecture from houses to temples giving the most complete example of what a Ming city would

have looked like. Pingyao also holds an International Photography Festival every September which draws in entries from all over the world

providing a stark contrast with the aura of history Pingyao creates.Pingyao

... The Best China Experiences!

An Overnight Sleeper TrainAn essential China experience, at least one overnight train trip will give a good idea as to how China ticks and the train network is actually very good and getting better all the time. Longer train journeys also offer a window into ordinary rural China.

Evening EntertainmentIn the larger cities a wide range of entertainment is available from cultural shows including Acrobats, Opera and Martial Arts to the staggering array of restaurants many of which are a great way to observe how Chinese people spend their free time.

Ancient TraditionsAs China hurtles into the future there is a compensating revival and reverence for ancient traditions and beliefs. Residential streets and parks are alive with people pursuing cultural activities from kite flying and Tai Chi to games of Chinese chess.

Delicious FoodFor many one of the big pluses of time in China is the sheer variety of food available. There seems to be a national obsession with food and this has led to fantastic cuisine whatever your tastes. A Chinese back at home will never be quite the same!

Breathtaking SceneryMuch of China is urban development sprawl or bland farmland but there are pockets of astounding scenery even in the densely populated East of China. Head further West to Yunnan, Sichuan, Tibet and Xinjiang for a more remote and wilder Asia.

Friendly PeopleOrdinary Chinese are very friendly and hospitable people who will often go out of their way to help a lost looking foreigner. Much of China has significant ethnic minority populations who are proud of their own culture and traditions.

New China BuzzThe glow of rapid economic development shines bright in China’s large cities. Aside from the pretty lights the real experience comes from the sheer feeling of dynamism and energy that this booming country gives off to the visitor.

High AdventureChina offers some fantastic chances for adventure with the Western provinces in particular offer remote wild scenery and trekking opportunities to little visited areas. Tibet and Xinjiang are probably the most adventurous provinces.

Tranquil TemplesMany temples have been surrounded by the buzz and noise of the fast expanding cities but once inside their courtyards it is possible to be transported to a world of tranquility and calm that predates the modern world outside.

red tape - visas, vaccinations & currency

China planning tip! We recommend taking a mixture of cash (UK pounds, US dollars or Euros) and an ATM card. Try

and avoid taking travellers Cheques.

The Chinese VisaEveryone requires a Chinese visa but the good news is that it is easy to obtain although you should allow plenty of advance planning. Normally visas are issued up to 3 months in advance of travel and are valid for stays of up to 30 days. You need one fully blank page and minimum 6 months validity of your passport. Allow plenty of time to obtain the visas in order to avoid last minute panics and embassy express fees!

VaccinationsThere are no specific vaccinations required for China in most cases but we do suggest that you clarify this with your doctor in case there are any issues unique to your medical history which may make certain vaccinations advisable.

You will not be asked to provide proof of any vaccinations on arrival in China unless you have arrived from a country where Yellow Fever exists in which case a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be asked for.

Note that malaria protection is not necessary for any of the places usually visited although insect repellent is advisable for destinations in the south of China.

CurrencyChinese Yuan, also known as “Renminbi” (RMB) and “Kwai”, is king in China and used for almost all transactions in what is still very much a cash orientated society.

The largest denomination is 100 which is approximately £ / €10 or US$15 so you’ll get used to carrying far more cash around on you than you do at home. Other denominations are 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1. You rarely come across coins which we think is a good idea!

Our advice is to wait until you arrive in China to obtain local Chinese RMB Yuan. The rates you receive outside of China are usually poor as RMB is not officially traded internationally. On arrival at the airport in China you will have the option of changing money at banks or using an ATM. Most hotels will also change cash US$ or Euros and less commonly pounds. Note that Travellers Cheques can be changed in China but only certain banks offer this service and cashing these cheques can be very time consuming.

Note that exchange rates within China at hotels, banks and ATMs are the same everywhere on any given day although commission rates may vary.
