What is the China Australia Millennial Project?

The rise of China is the story of our time and the story of this century, currently dubbed the Asian Century. China is Australia’s largest trading partner but also the largest trading partner of 124 other nations. What can Australia do to keep up? We do not have a strong enough supply of young, Asia-capable talent coming through the pipeline to populate the great opportunity that a rising China presents... yet.

The China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP) is a world-first bilateral business incubator inviting top young leaders from China and Australia (aged 18-35) to collaborate and co-design solutions to the largest social and environmental issues of the Asian Century.

CAMP assists the work of government, large and small business by unlocking new potential, relationships and propensity to collaborate among the best and brightest of both great nations.

Over the next 5 years, CAMP will produce an alumni of over 1000 extraordinary young people from Australia and China who know, like and trust each other and who have the ability to solve problems and create value together.

CAMP delegates this year 2015 come from all walks of life and types of job, from a Tibetan herdswoman-turned-entrepreneur to a Beijing jewelery designer and the founder of a Melbourne-based Social Enterprise based on crepes!

Our delegates have been chosen because they are already kicking goals in their fields, which span everything from technology to law to entrepreneurship and healthcare. They are passionate about meeting other young innovators and forging a better relationship between Australia and the region’s economic powerhouse, China.

The China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP) is a world-first project uniting top young leaders (aged 18-35) from China with their Australian peers for a bilateral business incubator across a broad range of industries.

The delegates you’ll meet at our Summit will have just finished a 12 week online program in which they have gained tools and methodologies to develop innovative ideas and models that benefit society and lead to progress. They’ve been taken out of their mental comfort zones and helped to discover new insights and creative solutions.

From critical thinking to the ability to inspire and delegate, CAMPers will have nurtured their self-esteem, authenticity, resilience, intuition and sociability to take action and drive change.

They’ll have experienced new perspectives, customs and practices from their Australian or Chinese fellow-delegates, built their knowledge of contemporary Chinese and Australian society and business, and learnt the cross-cultural skills they need to connect.

They’ll form friendships with outstanding Australian, Chinese and global experts and join the inaugural group of CAMP alumni – the top innovators and influencers from both countries who will work together for years to come.

We hope we’ve provided delegates an exceptional professional development program designed to stretch their creative problem solving and innovation skills. And we hope you enjoy meeting them!

The calibre of delegates coming through this program is truly astounding and it is inspiring to see this bright, young talent being recognised in such an innovative way.

In my role as General Manager of Westpac Premium and Migrant Banking, I can see first-hand that these are exciting times for the people of China and Australia. In the past decade, China has become Australia’s leading trading partner, and last year, Chinese nationals became the second-largest group of permanent migrants in Australia, making up the largest share of international students.

Message from Frances AdamsonCongratulations on the launch of the inaugural China Australia Millennial Project (CAMP). CAMP is an exciting new addition to an already strong innovation partnership between Australia and China.

CAMP creates a platform for young innovators from both countries to meet industry leaders, through CAMP’s diverse partnerships. This is an opportunity for our future leaders to learn from those who are right now blazing new paths in science, research, business, education, media and a range of other fields that span the Australia-China relationship.

Australia and China share many of the same challenges: how to make our cities vibrant and liveable, how to meet our peoples’ need for food and energy in a sustainable manner, how to ensure we’re placed to take best advantage of the tremendous opportunities presented by advances in information and communication technology.

The CAMP initiative seeks to address these challenges by drawing together young innovators from both countries with a broad range of skill sets and perspectives and providing these young people with the opportunity to step back, to listen, learn and discuss, and together develop new ideas and, we hope, new solutions.

I look forward to learning about the range of discussions that take place both through the online program and in Sydney, and to hearing about the ventures and ideas that are pitched to a room of venture capitalists, sponsors, investors and entrepreneurs at the end of the program.

Message from Professor Bob CarrThe China Australia Millennial Project is of enormous importance.

When young people exchange views on the relationship between our two countries there’s an understanding for the things that governments do. The best investment two nations can make is in building the capacity of their emerging leaders to collaborate for the benefit of all.

CAMP will produce a constituency which has embodied this understanding and will be a tremendous asset. As it matures and grows an alumni of hundreds, we can look forward to it adding great value to the Australia-China relationship. Australia and China currently enjoy a great friendship. We understand each other’s importance, characteristics and strengths. Surveys conducted by my think tank, the Australia-China Relations Institute at UTS, indicate that amongst China’s economic decision makers, the relationship with Australia has only become more important over the last 5 years.

Young people establishing people to people links, friendships and partnerships in both nations adds tremendous value for the senior government and business leaders in both great nations. CAMP provides a platform for these young people to develop insight and build confidence in working productively and positively with each other.

CAMP is the freshest approach that I have come across towards building a bridge between countries with a lot at stake. China is Australia’s largest trading partner, eclipsing the combined two way trade of our second and third largest partners the United States of America and Japan.

There is a great economic and strategic story to be told between our nations this century and I echo the sentiments of President Xi in his remarks in his address to the Australian parliament on November 17th 2014 when he said that “our relationship has reached a new and higher starting point, and we should be more visionary, broad minded and set more ambitious goals”. CAMP is doing just this and is a refreshingly bold approach to this. It is remarkable to note that it has developed from ideation to delivery in just 12 months.

I commend Andrea and her talented team for achieving so much in elevating the conversation and enhancing the potential of the international relationship which will characterise Australia’s future success.

I also commend the leading businesses and organisations that have offered their support to CAMP and recognised an outstanding idea from its inception.

I wish all of the CAMP delegates a very successful summit and have every faith they will achieve great things during the project and into their future careers.

People of Chinese ancestry have had a presence in NSW spanning 200 years and demonstrate great pride in their heritage. As a result, Australians of all backgrounds have become familiar with Chinese culture and traditions.

This vibrant community makes a significant contribution to our economic and cultural diversity, greatly enriching our proud multicultural society.

The NSW Government has identified China as a priority market and remains committed to further building on the fantastic cultural links thatalready exist between NSW and China.

CAMP ThinkTanksCAMPers have joined together into teams based on their backgrounds and the global challenges they’re working to overcome. We call these teams ThinkTanks. Each CAMP ThinkTank has support from inspiring thought leaders to develop their projects and ideas.

The two most innovative ideas in each CAMP Thinktank will be fast-tracked through prototyping, user testing, developing a business model and a value proposition and creating an implementation plan. Jack Zhang

Founder & President of Geekpark

The emergence and boom of geek culture in China has created a major impact on social progress, from technology innovation to social and cultural thinking. Geek Park was the first organization to bring the concept of a ‘geek’ to China, and provides geeks/innovators with original content, offline events and an accelerator service. Their regular meetups in China see over 1000 geeks attend each meeting. Geek Park has become the epicentre of China’s internet sector, attracting companies, developers and investors looking for a piece of the world’s biggest online market.

Rick Chen

Founder, Pozible

Rick is an entrepreneur with a strong focus on new media design. He has a keen interested in web-based technology, user interface design and innovative ideas that change people’s behaviour. Rick co-founded Australia’s first crowdfunding platform Pozible in 2010, which has became the 3rd largest crowdfunding platform worldwide. In 2013, Rick was selected by The Australian newspaper as one of the top 20 Australians to watch of the year.

Holly Ransom

Global Strategist

Holly is a global strategist with an unrelenting work ethic and a reputation for developing innovative solutions to complex multi-stakeholder problems for corporations, governments and non-profit organisations. Chair of G20 Youth Summit 2014, one of Australia’s ‘100 Most Influential Women’ 2012 and world’s youngest ever Rotary President lifting youth engagement by 2% globally in 2 years. Her corporate career includes Chief of Staff to NAB Wealth Chief Executive Andrew Hagger and Rio Tinto’s CEO Sam Walsh. Holly’s company, HRE Global, has worked with INPEX, CBH, Conoco Phillips and KPMG.

Andy Whitford

General Manager and Head of Greater China, Westpac

Andrew has responsibility for the bank’s operations and strategy in the region, covering mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. He has led Westpac’s operations in China since the 2007 opening of the first China branch in Shanghai. Andrew has extensive experience across the banking industry in China, working closely with the Chinese Government as it continues to pursue financial market reform. He is a regular commentator in the media on China related matters such as the Free Trade Agreement, Shanghai Free Trade Zone and Renminbi internationalisation.

Andrea Myles

CEO, China Australia Millennial Project

Andrea Myles loves China. Since travelling there as a young backpacker in 2002, she’s been hooked on learning as much as she can about this fascinating country. She’s since gained two bilingual Masters degrees in Chinese business & culture, lived in China for 5+ years, worked on social enterprise programs in regional China, headed up the Australia China Business Council, lead the business delegation of then Prime Minister Gillard’s second trip to China & co-founded the China Australia Millennial Project and the Engaging China Project - a government-recognised best-practice China engagement program in Australian high schools.

Andrew is the initiator of 1KG More campaign, a movement that engages travellers to carry books and materials and do service projects in rural China. Now Andrew is running a social enterprise focused on educational design. The product, 1KG Box, with an easy-to-use design and rich content, makes everyone a teacher, cultivating creativity, critical thinking and life skills for every child. Andrew is a council member of the China Youth Development Foundation, the largest educational foundation in China.

Ben Hamley

Ben is an established thought leader in the Australian creative and entertainment industries, co-editing one of the first books of original research on entertainment as a cultural system. Shay is a young innovator who’s passionate about solving problems, developing ideas and creating value. His educational background is in psychology, sustainability, education and business, while his occupational experience is in experience design, strategy, innovation and community engagement. He is a co-founder of Train Tracks, a social innovation projects that re-imagines the public transport experience by introducing music, art and culture. He started CrowdFlight, an airplane-based user testing hub.

Sally Hsu

Sally has a background in design, communication and press relations. She now works for Crone Partners as an architectural graduate and client liaison, working on large projects with international clients on prominent CBD high rise projects in Sydney and Brisbane. Deborah Sims

Deborah combines broad-based strategy, business development, sales and facilitation skills with a passion for design thinking built up over many years of applying design thinking in business-to-business contexts. Deborah has lead and worked with cross-cultural teams in Europe, the US, Australia, India and, most recently China. Now back in Australia, Deborah helps clients open up new possibilities by taking a design-based approach to problem solving.

Vivien Sung

Co-founder & Chief Experience Officer, CAMP

Vivien Sung is a design strategist, innovation facilitator and educator. As Chief Experience Officer of CAMP, she leads the design of the CAMP learning program and experience. Vivien teaches designing experiences and design thinking at UTS: Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building and UTS Insearch and was an organiser of the Sydney Sustainability Jam. She is passionate about innovation to create better futures and deepening the Asia-Australia relationship.

Yan Liu

Chief Curator, CAMP

Yan is responsible for designing the 12-week-online CAMP learning program and curating and facilitating the CAMP Summit 2015. She is also a serial social entrepreneur, learning facilitator and community builder. She co-founded Xindanwei, the first coworking center in China, Loving the Crowd, a crowd-funding consultancy firm, and Ask Lab, a social enterprise that connects talent and ideas with business and societal challenges through co-creation and experiential learning.

Claire has a solid corporate background and understanding of today’s business environment. She is passionate about helping business forge positive, profitable relationships. Claire has worked with individuals from China, India, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand and has a firm interest in Chinese-Australian relations. Her work has helped both large corporations and small businesses reduce time spent and money wasted, on conflict or misunderstanding caused by cross-cultural miscommunication.

Damien MacRae

General Manager Premium Banking, Westpac

Damien leads a team of bankers across Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and London providing superior banking and tailored financial services to affluent customers via a relationship banking model. He is responsible for Westpac’s migrant and expatriate strategy, leading the retail referral partnerships, business and priority segments. Since 2003, Damien has also acted as Head of Secured Finance, General Manager of Third Party Distribution, State General Manager for NSW Retail.
