The Chimes

June/July

2018

Trinity United Methodist Church 75 East High Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338

A nobleman in the 1800’s wondered what his

legacy would be. He wanted to leave

something behind that would speak to what was most important. He decided he would build a church. Of course, this took a long time, but when it was done, he felt that he had something that would be his legacy. The townspeople came to celebrate the completed church. In time, however, one of the onlookers noticed what looked like a fatal flaw. There were no lamps. How would this beautiful church be lit? There were brackets on the wall, holders for lamps, but not lamps.

Then the nobleman gave each family a lamp. They were to bring their lamp every time they came to worship. “When you are here, he said, “it will be lighter. When you are not, it will be darker. Realize that when you are not here some part of God’s house will be darkened.”*

This story reminds me of Hebrews 10:25 which says, “let us not give up meeting together…but let us come together to encourage one another…” The obvious point is that we come together on Sunday morning to worship God and if we are not there the light of Christ is less bright. Not only this, but we come together to be an encouragement to one another as we let our light sine for the glory of God.

God Bless,

Pastor Jeff

East Ohio Conference of the UMC Annual Conference at Lakeside will be held June 10th – 14th. Pastor Jeff will be in

attendance. Please contact the church office if you need anything during that time.

Community Outdoor Service - The Interchurch Council is again sponsoring a Community Outdoor Service to be held at the Mt. Gilead State Park on Sunday, 7/29 at 11:00 a.m. Please note there will be no services or Sunday School at Trinity that morning. Plan on meeting at the State Park that morning. Pastor Jeff will be bringing the message. Bring your lawn chairs, sunscreen and a dish to share for the meal following the service.

Spiritual submarines

Author Steve Farrar encourages Christian fathers to be spiritual submarines under the surface of their children’s lives. “Through your prayers you have the ability to affect situations where you are not physically present,” he writes in Standing Tall. “You may be undetected, but that does not mean that you are ineffective.”

A man who puts on the armor of God and goes to war on his knees for his children is a force to be reckoned with, Farrar adds. “When it comes to battle … understand that you have been given awesomely

powerful weapons.”

Car wash During a youth group car wash, a teenager drove up in his dented, old automobile.

“Welcome!” said another boy. “But I have to tell you that while we can wash your car, we can’t iron out the wrinkles.”

Independence Day lessons for church life

• Return to the basics — On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith, we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of course, Jesus.

• Honor the gift of freedom — “For freedom Christ has set us free … do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom. Likewise, as citizens of God’s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift with others.

• Enjoy community — July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events.

• Be light in the darkness — As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called to display the Gospel’s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power — as in, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8) — share a root. Through God’s power in us, we share Jesus — dynamically! — with others.
