Switch on your creativity! "We need to think differently!"

"This needs some fresh ideas!"

"We have got to be more creative around here!"

Are messages like these popping up more and more in your

workplace? Faced with complex, open-ended, ever-changing

challenges, organizations realize that constant, ongoing

innovation is critical to stay ahead of the competition. This

is why we need to be on the lookout for new ideas that can

drive innovation, and it's why the ability to think differently,

generate new ideas, and spark creativity within a team

becomes an important skill.

How to Generate New Ideas:- Standard idea-generation

techniques concentrate on combining or adapting existing

ideas. This can certainly generate results.

Breaking Thought Patterns : All of us can tend to get stuck

in certain thinking patterns. Breaking these thought patterns

can help you get your mind unstuck and generate new ideas.

Challenge assumptions: For every situation, you have a set

of key assumptions. Challenging these assumptions gives you

a whole new spin on possibilities.

Reword the problem: Stating the problem differently often

leads to different ideas. To reword the problem look at the

issue from different angles. "Why do we need to solve the

problem?", "What's the roadblock here?", "What will happen

if we don't solve the problem?" These questions will give you

new insights. You might come up with new ideas to solve

your new problem.

Think in reverse: If you feel you cannot think of anything

new, try turning things upside-down. Instead of focusing on

how you could solve a problem/improve operations/enhance

a product, consider how could you create the problem/

worsen operations/downgrade the product. The reverse ideas

will come flowing in. Consider these ideas – once you've

reversed them again – as possible solutions for the original

challenge.

Express yourself through different media: We have multiple

intelligences but somehow, when faced with workplace

challenges we just tend to use our verbal reasoning ability.

How about expressing the challenge through different

media? Clay, music, word association games, paint, there

are several ways you can express the challenge. Don't bother

about solving the challenge at this point. Just express it.

Different expression might spark off different thought

patterns. And these new thought patterns may yield new

ideas.

Connect the Unconnected: Some of the best ideas seem

to occur just by chance. You see something or you hear

someone, often totally unconnected to the situation you

are trying to resolve, and the penny drops in place.

Shift Perspective

Get someone else's perspective: Ask different people what

they would do if faced with your challenge. Play the "If I

were" game: Ask yourself "If I were ..." how would I address

this challenge? You could be anyone: a millionaire, Tiger

Woods, anyone. The idea is the person you decide to be

has certain identifiable traits. And you have to use these

traits to address the challenge

Employ Enablers:- Enablers are activities and actions that

assist with, rather than directly provoke, idea generation.

They create a positive atmosphere. Some of the enablers

that can help you get your creative juices flowing are:

Belief in yourself: Believe that you are creative, believe

that ideas will come to you; positive reinforcement helps

you perform better. Creative loafing time: Nap, go for a

walk, listen to music, play with your child, take a break

from formal idea-generating. Your mind needs the rest, and

will often come up with connections precisely when it isn't

trying to make them. Change of environment: Sometimes

changing the setting changes your thought process. Go to a

nearby coffee shop instead of the conference room in your

office, or hold your discussion while walking together round

a local park. Shutting out distractions: Keep your thinking

space both literally and mentally clutter-free. Shut off the

Blackberry, close the door, divert your phone calls and then

think. Fun and humor: These are essential ingredients,

especially in team settings.

Key Points:- The ability to generate new ideas is an essential

work skill today. You can acquire this skill by consciously

practicing techniques that force your mind to forge new

connections, break old thought patterns and consider new

perspectives.

”You have competition every day because you set suchhigh standards for yourself that you have to go out

every day and live up to that. “Michael Jordan

Think differently and Spark Creativity by GeneratingNew Ideas – The new generation should focus on, in

order to stay competitive.

Inspirational-A Nice Article By Swami Vivekananda...

I once had a friend who grew to be very close to me. Once

when we were sitting at the edge of a swimming pool, she

filled the palm of her hand with some water and held it before

me, and said this: "You see this water carefully contained on

my hand? It symbolizes Love." This was how I saw it: As long

as you keep your hand caringly open and allow it to remain

there, it will always be there. However, if you attempt to

close your fingers round it and try to posses it,

it will spill through the first cracks it finds This is the greatest

mistake that people do when they meet love...they try to

posses it, they demand, they expect... and just like the water

spilling out

of your hand, love will retrieve from you. For love is meant

to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are people

you love, allow them to be free beings. Give and don't expect.

Advise, but don't order. Ask, but never demand. It might sound

simple, but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to truly

practice. It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you

must sincerely feel no expectations from those who you love,

and yet an unconditional caring."

“I AM A MILKMANI am a servant of the farmers," Dr. Kurien.

The country mourns the loss of a genius,

Verghese Kurien. The man responsible for

making 'Amul' a household name, passed

away on September 9th, 2012.

Hailed as the "Father of the White

Revolution", Dr Kurien led the Operation

Flood campaign making India the biggest milk producing nation

in the world. Dr Verghese Kurien took over 'Amul' as the

Chairman in 1950. Amul came into existence to put an end to

the exploitation of the farmers by middlemen. The word 'Amul'

derived from a Sanskrit word 'Amulya' means priceless. That

it sure is.

Dr. Kurien built an iconic brand loved by all and Amul's

campaigns became a rage with its popular mascot, the girl in

a polka dotted dress who made fun of national events and

well known people in India. The 'Utterly Butterly Delicious'

girl had turned 50 earlier this year.

Back in those days when India was struggling with food scarcity

and illiteracy, only a mastermind like him could have thought

of doing business with social welfare and pulling the country

out of its pressing problems. From creating milk sheds to

thousands of milk cooperatives, from being responsible for

raising the rural incomes to fair pricing for the consumers,

the 'White Revolution' is credited with immeasurable success.

One of his greatest inventions was milk powder and condensed

milk using buffalo's milk which is abundant in India but was

not being utilized. His dedication towards cattle owners and

farmers released India from the shackles of food deficiency

and poverty. In a short span of time India transformed from

being a milk importer to a milk exporter. What started off as

business aiming at maximization of social welfare became a

model of success for all to follow.

From a mechanical engineer to a social entrepreneur to being

the 'Milkman of India', Veghese Kurien will be remembered as

a visionary par excellence.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FORNEW GENERATIONS MONTHI have so far had two months in Presidential office and what

words can I use to describe the experience? Exhilarating?

Thrilling? Humbling? I really do not have appropriate words

to describe the warmth and overwhelming generosity which I

received from all my fellow Rotarians.

I would now like to turn my focus to the RI theme for

September; the New Generations Avenue of Service. Just as

the youth in any community or nation are the foundation for

its future, so is the New Generation to Rotary. The New

Generation embodies our hopes, aspirations and dreams. Over

this month our activities and programs reflect the growing

importance of the New Generation Avenue of Service to Rotary.

As individuals, let us reach out to nurture, mould and mentor

our successors that we may truly rest assured that our future

is in good hands.

Over the New Generation month there are a myriad of

channels to direct our efforts and we would only be limited

by our imaginations. In this Year's theme Logo you will notice

doves. Doves symbolize peace and where there is peace there

is hope. It is my sincere hope that as Rotarians we shall

continue to cultivate "Peace through Service" so that we

continue to send out doves of peace to spread hope to the

youths about the future they should strive for.

I am so proud to be a Rotarian and am inspired daily by all

that we are doing and all that we are capable of. This month

especially, let's continue to spread the message of Peace

through Service by starting at the beginning: Our Youth !

Yours in Rotary
