OBJECTIVES

T his course is designed and recommendedfor physicians preparing for either certification or the recertification exam-

ination of the American Board of Pediatrics inGeneral Pediatrics. Practicing pediatricians, family physicians, or pediatric sub-specialists notconsidering either examination can also benefitfrom this intensive refresher course in pediatrics.For previous test takers who have had difficultypreparing for and taking the Board or exams ingeneral, this course offers practice in visual diagnosis and practice examinations under simulated conditions, in addition to the extensivereview of the theory and practice of pediatrics.

At the conclusion of this course the participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate increased knowledge of general pediatrics

• Compare current knowledge with information presented

• Identify areas of weakness requiring further study

• Integrate the extensive syllabus with current resources

• Recognize the format and style of Board questions

• Apply the test-taking experience gainedthrough daily practice in visual diagnosisand simulated examinations

• Experience a greater degree of confidencein preparing for the Board examination

SYLLABUS, PRACTICE EXAMS AND VISUAL DIAGNOSIS

E ach participant will receive a bound syllabus of all presentations as an individual take home resource forfurther review. Participants will also have online access

to 100 board level pre-test questions before the course and anadditional 50 questions after the course. Daily practice questions,answers and critiques will help participants analyze strengthsand weaknesses over the length of the week.

Questions for these examinations were chosen byChildren’s National faculty from the American Academy ofPediatrics Self-Assessment Exercise and the American Board ofPediatrics Recertification examinations. These questions arebeing used as an integral part of this Review with the permissionof the Academy and the Board.

A different set of visual diagnosis photographs and x-rayscovering important pediatric topics are displayed each day. Thesephotos and questions help identify important medical cases andclues in diagnosis with an emphasis on Board oriented cases.Critiques for the previous day’s photos are available each morning,providing invaluable practice at rapid recognition of significantpediatric problems.
