Introduction

AikidoisacontemporaryJapanesemartialartdevelopedbyMoriheiUeshiba(1883-1969).ThenameAikidomeansthewayofspiritualharmonyandisrepresentedbyJapaneseKanji:

Ai–Harmony

Ki–Spirit

Do–thewayorthepath

Asthenamesuggests,Aikidoisanon-aggressiveandnon-competitivemartialartbasedontheprincipleofblendingwithanattacker’sforce.ThetechniquesofAikidomaybeusedeffectivelyforself-defenceinmostcircumstancesby:

• makingnaturalcircularmovementsthatharmonisewiththeopponent’sactionsbydrawingouttheopponent’sforce,blendingwithitandutilisingittoneutraliseanattack.

• controllingtheopponentthroughvulnerablepoints,suchasthewrist,shoulder,neckandknees.

Forchildren,particularemphasisisplacedondevelopingmovementand‘spatialawareness’withtheaimofnotonlylearningself-defencetechniquesandskills,butbuildingself-esteem,increasingmotorskillsandimprovingpostureandcoordination.Alltheseelementscontributetowardsthechild’sself-defenceability,balanceandself-development.

Riai Aikido

RiaiAikidoWellingtonrunstwojuniorclassesattheCityDojo,thechildren’sclassfor8to12yearolds(approx.),andteenagers’classfor13to17yearolds(approx.).Thismanualcoversthechildren’sclasses.

Riai–itsmeaning.Initspresent-daycontext,Riaimeansprincipleofharmony.TheconceptofRiaiwasoneofthetopgoalsoftheswordfightingsamurai.

Riai–itslogo.TheRiaiAikidoSchool’slogocomprisesthreesymbolsofAikido–thetriangle,circleandsquare.Enclosingthesymbols,likehands,areplacedtwosilverferns,aMaorisymboloffriendship.Theinnercirclerepresentsallthepeopleoftheearth.Theoutersecondcirclerepresentstheuniverseofwhichtheearthandallitspeoplesarepart.

• 10thkyu-Whitebelt–Beginnersintheirfirstyear• 9thkyu-Yellowwithwhitestripbelt–Secondyearstudents*• 8thkyu-Orangewithwhitestripbelt–Thirdyearstudents*• 7thkyu-Greenwithwhitestripbelt–FourthyearStudents*

(Notethefirstintermediate/adultbeltabovewhiteisasolidyellowcolouredbelt-6thkyugrade)

Ateachlevel,studentstraintocompletethebelt/graderequirements,andwillbeaskedtogradewhentheyareproficientintherequirementsfortheirnextgrade.Gradingforbeltsareheldtwiceayear.

Attheendoftheirfourthyearstudentsshouldtransitionintotheteenagers’classandtraintoobtaintheir6thkyugrade(solidyellowbelt).Studentsnewtotheteenagers’classwillreverttowearingawhitebeltuntiltheirfirstgrading.

Badges

Asanintermediatesteptowardsabelt,twoorthreebadgesareassociatedwitheachbelt.Assessmentforbadgesisongoing,andtheyareawardedthroughouttheyear,typicallyattheendoftheterm.

OccasionallyotherachievementbadgesmaybeallocatedatthediscretionoftheTeacher.

Etiquette

• YoushouldalwaysarrivebeforethestarttimeofthesessionandbowwhenenteringtheDojo.

• Ifyouarelate,standatthesideofthematuntilaskedontothematbytheSenseioraSempai,thenbowinasusual.

• FootwearmustbeworntotheDojoandshouldberemoveduponenteringandplacedontheshelvesprovided.Thishelpsuskeepthemats–andourfeet–clean.

• Whenmovingontothemat,standontheedgeofthematandperformastandingbowtothekamiza(car-me-zah–frontwallwiththepictureofOsensei).ThisshowsrespecttotheDojo,yourteachersandyourfellowstudents.

• Whencalledtoseiza(say-zah–sittingposture)atthebeginningandendoftheclass,sitstraightwithhandsonthighs.Donotriseuntiltold.Tomoveintoseiza,firstkneelontheleftlegthentheright.Whenstanding,alwaysraisetherightlegfirst.

• WhenwatchingSenseioraSempaiinstruct,sitquietlyinseizaorwithyourlegscrossedneatly.AfterSensei/sempaihasdemonstrated,bowbeforerisingtobeginpractice.

• Alwaysbowtoyourpartnerwhenaskinghimorhertotrainandbowagainwhenyouhavefinished.Thisshowsrespectandsays‘thankyou’.

• WheneverSenseisays‘yame’or‘stop’,stopasfastasyoucanallowingforthesafetyofyourselfandyourpartner.

• Alwaysremainalert:thismeansdonotfoldyourarms,leanonthewall,orlieaboutontheflooraftertakingafall.Weneedtotakecareofeachothertomakesureno-onegetshurt.

• Ifyoumustleavethematduringtraining,alwaysasktheSensei/Sempai.Putshoesonifyouleavethedojo,e.g.tovisitthetoilet,tokeepyourfeetclean.Whenreturning,standattheedgeofthematuntiltoldtorejointheclass.

• Fingernailsandtoenailsmustbekeptreasonablyshortforthesafetyofyourselfandothers.Alljewelleryshouldberemoved.

• Alwayswearyourgi(ghee–traininguniform)withnootherclothing,orneat,looseclothingsuchast-shirtandshorts.
