This was a big move for Abram. But he obeyed God with his wholeheart. Abram is an example for allof us today.

Abram traveled to the land ofCanaan. God promised to give thisland to him and his children. But thepeople in this land did not obeyGod. Because of this, there was norain in Canaan.

This famine in the land causedAbram to go to Egypt. After a time,he came back to Canaan.

Lot also had a wife and many ani-mals. Both Abram and Lot had somany animals that they had to settlein separate lands. Abram gave Lotthe choice of what land he wouldlike in Canaan.

Lot and his family settled amongthe cities of the plain.

Promises from God and Tithing

Abram met Melchizedek, the Kingof Salem. Melchizedek was thePriest of God. Abram gaveMelchizedek a tenth of all heowned. This is a tithe.

All that we have comes fromGod. He gives us much! However,we are expected to give one tenthback to Him. That is why we titheto God’s Church. If your parentsgive you 10 cents, you give 1 centto God through His Church. Askyour parents to explain to you whata tithe is.

maid, Hagar, as a wife. Sarai hopedthat Hagar could have a child forAbram. In those days, men some-times had more than one wife.Hagar did have a son. His name wasIshmael.

Quite a few years later, Godchanged Abram’s name to Abraham.Abraham means “father of manynations.” God was going to makemany nations out of the children of

Abraham's family. God alsochanged Sarai’s name to Sarah.Sarah means “princess.”

Sodom and Gomorrah

One day, Abraham was sitting at histent. Three men appeared. Abrahamdid not know that two of these menwere angels. He also did not knowthe other man was a member of the

God Family—the Word—whowould later become Jesus Christ.

Abraham welcomed his quests. He invited them to rest. He also hadhis servants prepare a meal forthem.

These men told Abraham thatSarah would have a son. Sarah over-heard what they said. She could notbelieve it! But both Abraham andSarah were very happy.

The two angels were sent toSodom, by the Word. People inSodom did not obey God. The citywas full of sin. The Word toldAbraham that he was going to burnSodom.

Abraham knew that Lot lived inSodom. Abraham asked, “If thereare 50 people who obey God inSodom, will you save the city?” TheWord answered, “Yes, I will savethe city if there are 50.”

“If there are 45 people who obeyGod will you save the city?”Abraham asked. Again, the Wordagreed to save the city if there were45 people.

Abraham then asked, “If therewere 40, would you save the city?”He then asked about 30, then 20. Hethen asked, “If there were only 10,would you save the city?” The Word

said, “I will not destroy the city ifthere are 10 people who obey God.”

The angels arrived in Sodom. Lotwelcomed them into his home. Theangels knew that the city was filledwith evil people. They warned Lotand his family, “Get out of Sodom! It will be destroyed by God!” Theyadded, “Don’t stop and don’t lookback.”

When Lot and his family wererunning from Sodom, his wifelooked back. She missed Sodom, and did not obey the command notto look back. She instantly turned tosalt! She did not learn the lesson thatshe had to obey what God says to do.

Isaac Is Born

Soon after, Sarah had a son, just asGod said she would. His name wasIsaac. At 100 years old, Abrahamfinally had a son! Everyone wasvery happy!

But Hagar was not happy. Shebecame jealous because she felt thatAbraham spent more time withIsaac. Hagar said bad things andSarah overheard them.

Sarah went to Abraham and said,“Hagar and Ishmael must leave!”Abraham did not want this to hap-

pen. But he knew that his familywould not be happy together. Thenext day, Abraham said goodbye toHagar and his son Ishmael. But Godtold Abraham that He would lookafter them.

Abraham’s Test

Many years passed. As Isaac grewup, Abraham taught him to keepGod’s laws.

Isaac became a young man. Oneday, God decided to test Abraham.God wanted to know if Abrahamwould trust God—always! God toldAbraham to “take your son toMoriah and sacrifice him as a burntoffering!”

This shocked Abraham! For years,God had told him that He would pro-duce a great people through Isaac. But Abraham knew that God lovedhim. He knew that God knew whatwas best for him. He also knew thatGod would keep His promise.

The next morning, he left withIsaac and a couple of servants. Threedays later, they arrived. He told hisservants to wait. Isaac and Abrahamwent up to the place of sacrifice.

When they came near the moun-tain, Isaac asked where the lambwas for the sacrifice. Abrahamanswered, “God will provide.”

When they arrived at the place, they built an altar and set the woodin place. Abraham bound Isaac and

Just then, a voice said, “Do notkill your son or do anything to him.Because you are willing to give upyour son, I now know that you fearGod and will obey Him.”

Abraham passed the test! He wasoverjoyed! God provided for the

offering a ram that was caught in thethicket nearby.

A Wife for Isaac

A few years passed. It was time forIsaac to find a wife. Abraham senthis chief servant to Abraham’shomeland. Abraham knew that Goddid not want Isaac to marry awoman from Canaan. He knew that

Isaac should marry someone of hisown race. Abraham desired a wifefor Isaac who would obey God andkeep His laws. So the servant tookten camels and began his journey.

After several days of traveling, the servant came to the city ofNahor. He was near a well and hiscamels needed water. The servantprayed to God, “God of Abraham,

please show me who should beIsaac’s wife.”

Before the servant fin-ished praying, a verybeautiful woman arrived. Her name was Rebekah. The servant asked her for adrink. She gave him a drinkand also offered to givewater to his camels.

The servant knew that Godhad answered his prayer. He gaveher some gold jewelry and askedher who her parents were. Sheanswered, “I am Rebekah, daughterof Bethuel and granddaughter ofNahor.” Nahor was Abraham’sbrother. This meant that Isaac andRebekah were second cousins.

The servant explained toRebekah why he was there. She ranhome to tell her family. Rebekah’sbrother, Laban, invited the servant
