Elissa El-Tayib flits into the room like a little butterfly. Her winning smilebelies the fact that she has been treated for
cancer for a year and a half, but it also hints at her manytalents. Elissa was born in Syria; her heritage also has a Russian influence.
Her dad grew up in New Jersey and studied medicine in the Ukraine. Hermom is a native of Syria. Perhaps it is this rich cultural heritage that has
encouraged her interests. She loves to learn! Her parents say that she asks amillion questions every day! She writes her own songs, but she has also participated in acompetition singing “Home On The Range”! She was given a rocking horse while she was in the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center — and that’s when“Home On The Range” became her favorite song. She also lovesreading and is a whiz with video games.
How can a child with cancer have time for so many activities? Theanswer is simple: children are children first, cancer patients second. That zest for life is the reason the Children’s Art Project works sohard to provide a variety of programs that help the children deal with theircancer treatment and prepare to grow into successful adults:
K Summer camps (Camp Star Trails and Camp A.O.K. — for Anderson’s Older Kids) aremore than a week of fun with friends, with medical personnel quietly in the background. It’s a time when young patients and their siblings can spread their wings and develop a bit of independence, try new activities and forget they are fighting cancer.
K The Children’s Cancer Hospital is so full of life! In addition to the in-hospital classrooms, CAP funds the Creative Arts Program that brings music, art and creative writing into the lives of all our young patients.
K The Child Life staff works with patients and their parents to explain what’shappening. With their special dolls, they can show a tiny child where hisorgans are and what will happen in specific tests. They also plan days when the children can pretend they are the doctors, and their doctors are the patients. It’s a wonderful role reversal!
K You can read about all the programs CAP funds on our Web site atwww.childrensart.org/programs.And remember — your purchasefrom this catalog helps us fund all theseprograms. Thank you for your support!

The charming new book, Our Shadow Garden, is the gift oflandscape designer Cherie Foster Colburn to the children at
M. D. Anderson’s Cancer Center Hospital. The bookblends the artwork of our pediatric patients with Ms. Colburn’s story line and adds information about
nocturnal creatures and plants. The delightful scenario will captivate children and adults, enhanced by the colorfulartwork of the children. It’s a great bedtime story!
