3. Key vocabulary
SIAMS Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools- Not Diocese inspection, RE inspection, Church inspection
Core (not key) questions--- not hierarchical- see Evaluation Schedule
‘Best fit’ •it is likely some criteria will be met both above and below the grade•3 single word grades retained
•outstanding, good and satisfactory •no place for conditional grades such as good with outstanding features

SIAMs manager phones school up to a week before inspectionSIAMS manger will confirm that the school is openThe inspector is agreed by the headteacher on behalf of the FGBInspector phones the school ( within 24 hours)

Pre-inspection evidence –Inspectors request from the school
• The school SEF, SIAMS Supporting Evidence document, SEES, grade descriptor, collective worship and RE policy
The inspector accesses independently• School website * • Most recent SIA/MS and Ofsted reports – from
Ofsted and NS websites Provided by the Diocese• Data on school performance• The inspector will then send a SIB 24 hours before
the inspection- form basis of the inspection

Additional evidence on the dayTo be requested during the phone call to the headteacher:
• school’s own tracking data including Raise on Line commentary, attendance and exclusion data – request discussion with appropriate member of SLT
• RE and worship files – planning; evaluations; assessments; monitoring
• school improvement plan and/ or Christian Distinctiveness action plan
• other relevant policies
• a selection of pupils’ RE books.

The Timetable – sample on website• initial meeting with headteacher to discuss the SIB
• regular updates for the headteacher ( no surprises)
• a learning walk- triangulation trek
•Joint observations of RE lessons in KS1 & 2 with headteacher/ senior leader
•Observation of Collective Worship (headteacher leading/ facilitating)
• at least one meeting with a group of students
• a midday summary to reshape the inspection with headteacher (……?)
• scrutiny of data with senior leader
• discussion with foundation governors* and sometimes parents
• time to prepare the formal feedback

Safeguarding
All inspectors are DBS checked by the dioceseThey adhere to a strict code of practiceThey are independently insuredThe inspector has a badge, which is their licence to practiceThey will bring a contract which is an agreement between the school governors and the inspector

Feedback and publication Inspector will summarise their findings and give a
provisional grade which may be subject to change
It must be confidential to the room Personnel attending – Headteacher , 1 SLT, COG,
incumbent
Report goes to the Critical reader , returned to school for factual check within 10 working days
The inspector then sends the final report

Use the evaluation schedule as a starting point Start with impact and evidence it on the SSED Fill in the grade descriptor Fill in the summary- does it match your SIP?
Look on the Canterbury diocesan website for electronic copies of the materials – other diocese are different.
Consider accepting the Diocese offer of an MMR
