• A nuclear family is a family group consisting of only a father and mother and their children, who share living quarters.

• Nuclear families meet their individual members’ basic needs because available resources are divided among only a few individuals or the family would be known as an extended family.

• Historical records indicate that it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that the nuclear family became prevalent in Western Europe. With the emergence of Proto-industrialisation( 第一次工業革命 ) and early capitalism( 資本主義 ), the nuclear family became a financially viable social unit.

• After the World War II, the United States experienced a renewed interest in 'the home' and building family units. The family unit became a symbol of security and a return to traditional gender roles.

現代核心家庭型態：

中世紀兒童的觀念

• 現代兒童的觀念是人們對兒童具有某種特殊的本性，這種特殊的本質把孩子與成人，甚至把孩子與少年區別開來。而在中世紀社會裏，這樣的意識是沒有的。在當時有下列的現象 :

(一 )孩子一旦到了可以擺脫父母、保姆或其他人經常性的關照而獨自行動的年齡時，就從屬於成人社會

(二 )他們參與成年人的各種活動 (勞動、玩耍 )

(三 )穿著與大人一樣只是比例縮小了的服裝，見下頁

兒童意識的轉變• 從 14 世紀以後，西方社會開始在藝術作品、肖像畫和宗教中表達孩子擁有的人格。

• 在 16 世紀上層社會階級中，嬰幼兒穿上了一種可以與成人相區別的服裝。一種新的兒童概念出現了。不過，兒童在那時因為可愛、單純還只是被看成是大人的玩物，兒童期作為一種與成年期相分離的狀態的意識還不存在。

• 到 17 世紀，人們逐漸意識到孩子是與大人不一樣的，他們不僅僅是縮小的成人。孩子不僅被看成是天真無瑕，而且也是弱小的。他們將孩子看成是由上帝所創造的脆弱的生靈，既需要得到保護，又需要得到教育和改造。

• 到 18 世紀時，這兩種新的因素，加上對孩子的衛生和身體健康的關心都出現在家庭中，現代的兒童觀念出現了，孩子成了家庭的中心。
