AA s the saying goes; “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun,” but it’s still hard to believe that I’m already

entering my second year as your President. It has been a great ride, with more to come.

AA t this writing, we just completed the final event of CBC’s fiscal year…our annual Golf Classic held at

the Seven Bridges Golf Club, in Woodridge on June 25th. This year’s Outing began with golfers enjoying a Bloody Mary bar hosted by Thorne Associates, followed by a lively round of golf. Unfortunately, storm warnings brought golfers inside for a short delay, but all were able to complete their rounds and enjoy the festive dinner that followed. After dinner, the awards and raffles made for a great time for all. One table group was particularly lucky, walking away with a 60” flat screen TV, an Odyssey White Ice putter, and numerous other items that evening.

UU p next for CBC is a Joint Summer Event to be hosted by CBC and its Future Leaders group. Join

us Tuesday, July 29th for an early evening Architectural Boat Tour on the Shoreline Charter’s Evening Star. This event will include appetizers and an open bar, making for a truly perfect way to enjoy the passing views of the beautiful city we’ve all helped to build.

AA ugust brings a short break for members, however the CBC will keep busy with the launching of our

annual Membership Drive and preparing for the Fall Season kickoff of meetings and events. Summer days shall remain active throughout, with the collecting of annual membership dues and editing member company changes for the database, directory, and website.

WW ith this in mind, please annotate any changes on the membership update form included with the

annual membership renewal dues invoice sent recently

to your firm. This is key to ensuring that your company contact information is current in all of our publications and on-line.

MM eanwhile, the CBC Fall line-up of programs and events is nearly complete. September will bring

our Fourth Annual Economic Summit. While last year’s well-attended program featured an outlook from the general contractor’s point of view, this year we will feature commentary from the owner’s perspective. Scheduled presenters for this event are: Boyd Black (University of Chicago), York Chan (Advocate Health), Ken Kaiser (Northwestern Medicine), Ron Nayler (Northwestern University), Kevin O’Malley (Archdiocese of Chicago), and Chris Rogan (University of Illinois). Be sure to join us on September 17th for a dynamic panel discussion by these key decision makers in our industry.

OO ctober traditionally brings our Award of Honor program. This year we will unveil a new twist on the

award on October 15th. While we previously honored a senior industry leader for lifetime accomplishments, this year we will instead spotlight a new Future Leader Award of Honor. This new category for the Award of Honor will recognize an up-and-coming professional within our industry who embodies particularly strong leadership qualities and future potential. Stay tuned for more information on this award! The details are still being finalized, and nomination forms will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

OO ur final event of 2014 will feature Tom Scarangello, Chairman of both the New York Building Congress

and Thornton Tomasetti, speaking on construction industry innovation and best practices at our luncheon meeting on November 19th. It should be very interesting to learn the views of a major industry player from our sister association in the Big Apple.

FF inally, I must also observe that, even with all this continuous activity and planning in the air, it is still

summer…and we should all kick back to enjoy these precious moments of kinder weather while we can. So, in closing, I would like to wish all our CBC members, friends and associates an enjoyable and relaxing summer with family and friends.

A Word From Our President... By James A. Sikich, President

The Chicago Building Congress spends the Summer preparing for each new year with several important tasks, beginning with billing for dues. In late June, all member companies were invoiced for their 2014-2015 dues. That mailing also included an information update request form, which is used to maintain our member

database, and develop and publish the upcoming year’s directory. This is your best opportunity to inform CBC about any changes in representatives, membership status, names, titles, address change, etc. Up-to-date information helps keep both our print and on-line directories current and useful to all.

FUTURE LEADERS SPRING EDUCATIONAL EVENTFUTURE LEADERS SPRING EDUCATIONAL EVENT On May 1, 2014 CBC’s Future Leaders Group hosted their 2nd Annual Spring Educational Event. This “lunch and learn”, attended by 40 Industry Professionals, was graciously hosted by of Willis of Illinois. Presented by Senior Level Subject Matter Experts, Mark Baechle,

Greg Fields, and Bill Hines, this presentation discussed real life situations encountered by Willis with contractors, architects, and owners. While all names remained confidential, the resulting outcomes of these claims provided a wealth of information on what lines of insurance responded, and why these lines of coverage are a necessity to the construction industry. Following their presentation, the group toured the Willis Skydeck’s “ledge”...a feat not for the faint of heart!
