Veterans Day falls on the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918.

Take the time on November 11th to

say Thank You to all our servicemen for their service to our country.

Join the rest of the nation on this Veterans Day in remembering the sacrifices of America's over 25 million veterans and expressing our appreciation for their service.

Brother/Sir Knight Roger S. Tyderek, Jr. has been an officer of the Lansing Council #3540 and a member of Stritch Assembly for many years. However his health, specifically his eye sight has been on the decline. Unfortunately it has come to the point now that he cannot work, drive and needs assistance to get around.

An expensive surgery to aid in regaining the use of his eyes is on the horizon, but this will prove to be costly.

The Lansing council officers and I are looking to help in the medical costs for Roger, and we are hoping that the Chicago Chapter can help.

The need for food to feed hungry families is ongoing especially during November and December. Keep up the good work by helping others have enough to eat during these tough times.

The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in our local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Order wide Food for Families Program.

Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over 3.8 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens.

To encourage local Knights of Columbus councils to participate in this worthwhile program, the Supreme Council offers financial rebates to councils, assemblies or Squires circles that donate food or money. For councils or assemblies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a council contributes to a parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per council/assembly per fraternal year.

Circles will receive a refund from the Supreme Council of $20 for every $100 donated, or every 200 pounds of food that is contributed - up to a maximum refund of $100 per circle per fraternal year.

Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations should be cumulative for the fraternal year and there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made. However, to be eligible for the rebate, the cumulative total of contributions of food/money needs to at a minimum of $500 or 1,000 pounds of food for councils or assemblies, and a minimum of $100 or 200 pounds of food for circles.

In addition, the Supreme Council recognizes that participating in this program can be time consuming for the local council. Should a council choose to participate in this program, this will fulfill all four of the Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award.

In order for a council to qualify as fulfilling all four requirements, the council must collect and donate a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and council members must contribute a minimum of 100 man-hours in the program.

Participating councils, assemblies, circles can qualify to receive an attractive plaque by reporting activity in the program on the Food for Families Reimbursement Program Form (#10057) to the Supreme Council.

For additional information on the Food for Families Program, please contact the Supreme Council at 203-752-4402.

If your council has yet to place your Coats for Kids order now is the time to do so. By ordering now, you’ll be guaranteed to have coats on hand by wintertime.

Twelve new winter coats cost $220.00 (shipping included). In these challenging economic times, no family should have to keep their child home from school on a cold day because of lack of a winter coat.

With proper planning of our coats distributions, mindful of the power of good action photos and well written stories, working with Diocesan and local news media, we can reach many Catholic gentlemen who have not yet joined our councils and show them one of the many powerful reasons to join us as a Knight of Columbus!

For more information on how to participate in Coats for Kids, go to

www.illinoisknights.org

Click on the "Programs" tab

Scan down to "Community" and Click on the “Coats for Kids Form”.

All order forms and checks must be sent to the state office at Illinois State Council, PO Box 681, Kankakee, IL 60901-0681.

Make the checks payable to: Illinois State Council (in Memo Section-"coats")

Start planning now to get your free throw contest off to a running start. It's an Easy Shot!

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship program is a great way to provide entertainment and enjoyment for the young people in your community. To start planning, there are steps that you should keep in mind:

Chicago Archdiocesan Chapter www.ChicagoKofC.com

Editor: Robert E. Bukowski, PP November - December 2016 Page 4

Order the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Kit (#FT-KIT) using this order form. You can also use the order form in the Council Report Forms Booklet (#1436), or call the Department of Fraternal Services at 203-752-4270.

Schedule a date and location for the event. Contact schools, community centers and youth centers to reserve a basketball court. January is recommended for council competitions, February for district competitions, and March/April for regional and state championships. Sign ‘em up! Your Free Throw Championship Kit contains posters announcing the contest. Obtain permission to display them in schools, youth and community centers, and church vestibules. Make sure that entry forms/score sheets (#1598) are also available at these locations. Pre-register contestants whenever possible.

Enlist help from schools. Ask school superintendents, principals and athletic directors to promote your championship.

See if schools will hold preliminary competitions as part of their intramural or physical education programs. High school athletes should be reminded to check with their state high school athletic association about possible eligibility conflicts. Don’t forget to contact and invite the recreational and youth basketball programs in your community.

Build public interest. Use the sample press release in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Rules, Regulations, Tips and Information Guide (#1928) to announce your championship. Retype the release on council letterhead, giving the details of your championship. Deliver or send it, along with clip art logos, to the editors of both local news and sports sections.

After the competition, be sure to send out a press release announcing

the winners. When sending press releases to radio or television stations always use the program’s official name: “Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.”

Be sure to send in the Participation Report Form (FT-1). This form provides the Supreme Council with informational statistics, which enables the contest to continue to be a success.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Chairman:

SUNDAY ROSARY

PROGRAM

The 5th Sunday Rosary Program is off to a great start and many councils are reporting that prospective members have approached council members after the program with an interest in joining. Councils conducting this program need to be prepared for men inquiring about joining their council by having Prospect Cards (#921A) and Form 100’s available.

This program is designed to encourage more involvement in Church activities by council members, their families and parishioners. The program should be conducted in the remaining months that contain five Sundays. January and April 2017 contain a fifth Sunday and councils are encouraged to participate.

Councils that wish to conduct this program should first consult with your local pastor or council chaplain in order to obtain

permission to conduct the program and to ensure there is no conflict with other scheduled parish activities.

Fifth Sunday Kits (#SR-KIT) are available through the Department of Fraternal Services. The kits consist of a finger rosary and prayer card. The prayer card contains instructions on how to pray the finger rosary as well as the prayers and mysteries of the rosary.

Personal rosaries may also be used when participating in the program. Councils conducting this program during the 2016-2017 fraternal year will fulfill all four Church Activity requirements for the Columbian Award.

Please visit the Knights of Columbus website for additional details on the program. www.kofc.org/5thsunday

We are underway with the Vocations Support Raffle. If your council is participating, it’s time to find that raffle book you received and fill it out and send it in. Your participation will enable the State Council to continue the Vocations Support Program and expand into areas that have never been looked at before.

With your help the annual gifts to seminarians on their birthday, Christmas and for their ordination to the priesthood will continue. Please take the time to return that raffle book to the State Office by December 2, 2016, that way everybody is a winner.

"Shamrocks for Kids" to benefit MERCY HOME

FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

The Chicago Chapter's #1 Charity is Mercy Homes for Boys and Girls. The "Shamrock for Kids" Program is a program that the Chapter is promoting for a number of reasons.

First, it is our #1 Charity. Second, it is in the spirit of Fr. McGivney's vision of the Knights of Columbus, taking care of children. Third, it is an opportunity for all Councils, especially Councils that are struggling with Membership and activities, to be visible in the Parish without a lot of manpower and at no cost.

The window of opportunity to run this Program is closing quickly.

First, you will need to get the permission of your Pastor to collect donations for the pins after Masses on a Sunday or multiple Sundays, during the month of March.

Second, you will need to make contact with Jeff Griggs to obtain pins, vests, instructions, etc. You should be able to successfully execute this program with as little as 4 volunteers. Bulletin and pulpit announcements are available. Everything will be provided at no cost to the Council.

See flyer on page 11 recapping the "Shamrocks for Kids" Program.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS

This Holiday Season the

Knights of Columbus would

like to remind you to “Keep

Christ in Christmas”. Some

things you can do are:

* Light an Advent wreath and

hold a weekly Advent

ceremony at family dinnertime

each Sunday during Advent.

This can include prayers,

candles, songs and anything

else that can make Advent a

special time.

* Help those less fortunate by

buying a gift or two through

an Angel Giving tree or Toys

for Tots.

* Pray the rosary sometime

during the holiday season.

One special time could be the

feast of Our Lady of

Guadalupe on December 12th.

*Send Christmas cards with

religious theme. Also try to

use religious postage stamps

when possible.

* Resist the temptation, even

when you’re in a rush or short

of space to abbreviate

“Christmas” as “X-mas”.

Reducing Christ to an “X”

trivializes the message of the

season.

May God bless you and your

families during this Holy

Season. The officers and

members wish all our brother

knights and their families a

most Blessed, Healthy and

Happy Holiday Season. May

God’s love light our way

this Christmas and may

that love find the spirit of

true peace.

"No single act of love for God will be lost, No generous effort is meaningless, and No painful endurance is wasted.” Pope Francis.

"Every person is worthy of our giving. Every human being is the object of God's infinite tenderness, and he himself is present in their lives. Every person deserves our love." Pope Francis.

"When we are faithful to who God created us to be, and what God calls us to do, incredible things happen.” Matthew Kelly

RE: "Shamrocks for Kids" to benefit

MERCY HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

• Target Date: Late Feb - March 2017.

■ Effectively Ends on 3/17/17, but campaign continues until 3/31/17.

• Secure Pastor's permission to solicit donations after all Masses one weekend

in the vestibule or outside.

■ If the Parish has a St. Pat's party, that is generally the most effective weekend.

■ Advertise the campaign in the Parish bulletin

■ Request a pulpit announcement

• Suggested quantity to request is (500) per Parish served.

■ Rough target is $1000 per Parish. This is really just an average. Some

Parishes will generate much lower results, and some Parishes will greatly

exceed that target.

• Determine how many cans and aprons you will need.

■ Generally (4) per parish per weekend.

■ Please only request the maximum number you will need for any given

weekend. If you pick a different weekend for each Parish you serve, that will

cut down your manpower needs as well as the number of cans and aprons

necessary.
