Brunel

With backstage temperatures more suited to Brunei than Brunel, 75 students from Year 7, 8 & 9 took part in our lower school production from 10th – 13th July. ‘Brunel’ featured a host

Sixth Form News

Summer in the Sixth Form here at Chew has been hugely enriched by the wonderful Art & Design Exhibition of students’ work which has been on display in the Sixth-Form Centre. Featuring pieces from students studying Art, Photography, Textiles and Product Design in the Sixth Form the quality and diversity of the work has been absolutely terrific to see, with many visitors to the exhibition remarking on the exceptional standard. Congratulations to the very many students involved! In recent weeks Year 12 have been preparing for next steps after Chew Valley through our Futures Week programme which has looked at a range of higher education, employment and training opportunities, while the main event at which we said goodbye to our wonderful Year 13 leavers was our summer ball at Coombe Lodge in Blagdon. As ever, this was a lovely evening for staff and students alike and a terrific way to say goodbye to such an outstanding year group. On an individual level two recent achievements deserve particular mention. Firstly for five times British champion Pete Miles in Year 12, who won the bronze medal in the under-18 category at the recent European Judo Championships – an amazing achievement! (Sorry we don’t have a photo, Pete!) Secondly for Ingrid Counsell who won the South West Modern Foreign Languages Speaking Competition. Having qualified in the regional heats a couple of months previously in Bath, she worked very hard in preparation for the finals at Exeter University. Ingrid was in the Key Stage 5 non-native category and was required to do a three minute speech in Spanish on the topic of ‘My dream’. Finalists were allowed to interpret this title in whatever way they chose and Ingrid decided to talk about feminism and her view on the discrepancies between men and women that exist in our world. Starting with Martin Luther

King’s dream, Ingrid spoke persuasively and powerfully, captivating her audience with not only a well constructed argument but also excellent Spanish grammatical accuracy and an authentic accent.

Competition was fierce, not least from celebrity British diver Tom Daley, who took time out of his training regime in Mallorca to give a compelling presentation via a video conference link. The judges, six University lecturers, struggled to decide the winner of this category, but eventually gave the first prize to Ingrid; a lovely trophy, certificate and £50. Ingrid is over the moon and deserves full recognition for such a monumental achievement. She is continuing Spanish into Year 13 with the intention of pursuing a languages degree at University and is a prime example of the linguistic capabilities and achievements of pupils at the school.

Year 10 News

CV Equestrian Teams It’s been a good equestrian year for us so far! Chloe Cole won and qualified at the first show jumping competition of the year, and is going to the NSEA Championships in November. In March we won both our team classes at Greylake, (Kings Sedgmoore Equestrian), which was for Crispins School Show Jumping. The teams that day were, Izzy Twiggs, Charlotte Bishop, Abbi and Jess Wyatt. Charlotte Bishop had a double clear in the

first class, and Izzy Twiggs went one better getting a double clear in both first and second class. The NSEA Eventers Challenge at West Wilts saw more than 150 competitors in each class battle snow and hail on a bitterly cold day. Will Twiggs ended the day individually 14th on a fantastic score that would have won it for him if not for 2 time penalties. Izzy Twiggs also managed to finish in the top. Charlie Padfield completed the 90cm course after a crashing fall in the 80cm and was very brave to do so. Charlotte Bishop Tiki Gregson and Izzy Twiggs also competed at Stonar ODE. Although the team was one short they were placed 4th out of 18 teams. Tiki Gregson snatched 2nd place for the second year in a row! Still to look forward to are Stonar and Blundell’s School competitions in September. We are also pleased to announce that Chew Valley will again be hosting our Team Show Jumping Event on Saturday 14th September on Ogborne Fields with kind permission of Mr and Mrs Ogborne. The schedule and entry form will soon be available on the school website. Isobel Twiggs Lulworth Cove Visit On the 12th June the Year 10 geography students visited the country’s first natural heritage site, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. It was a great day out full of spectacular natural beauty although it poured down with rain the WHOLE time. Part of the field work was to measure the angle of the beach and conduct a tide count. We visited the heritage centre for a short talk about the rock types and erosion. An interesting day…in the rain!

Both Year 10 boys and girls’ teams finished second in the BANES Athletics competitions. Outstanding achievements included Ella Sage winning the 200 metres and Tom Booth the Javelin. Congratulations to all who took part. On Monday 17th June nearly 200 eager but nervous year 10's set off to begin their week's work experience. Thanks to their enthusiasm, Mr Hammett's persistent chasing and with the help of families and their tutors all had found a placement. Geographically they covered an area from Cornwall in the West to London in the East, up to the Midlands and almost to

the South coast in a southerly direction. Experiences in the caring professions ranged from hospitals and veterinary practices to care homes and schools. There were placements in engineering and industry organisations, offices and factories, building sites, film studios, laboratories, shops, music festivals and even down drains. Our students found themselves working with and alongside people of all ages, skills and abilities. Most enjoyed the week and for others it confirmed what type of career they should or should not pursue. Overwhelmingly the pupils impressed the employers and the school received a number of glowing testimonials about their positive attitude and helpfulness. Elsewhere in the newsletter are some of the pupils own memories and thoughts.

Year 9 News

Rounders The Year Nine girls' rounders won a tournament at Broadlands School in June, competing against 6 other teams. They battled hard and played some excellent rounders, with great batting and quick fielding. The girls go through to the Level Three Summer Games at Bath University!

Enrichment In what has become a tradition at Chew, the last enrichment session of the year is sports themed. Pupils were asked to wear PE kit to school and take part in either a mixed netball or dodgeball tournament. The competition and rivalry between tutor groups was fierce. The eventual winners of both competitions were Miss Butcher’s 9W. Maybe something to do with the PE background? Well done to everyone that took part and for the tutors for their help and support.

Curtain up Talented young actor George Miles recently picked up the award for Student of the Year at the Curtain up Theatre School in Bath. George has been a member of the Theatre School for a few years now and has also been showing off his talents in the school production of Brunel.

Primary Sports Festival After being set the challenge at the beginning of the year of topping the current Y11 total of 170 pupils completing a sports festival, Y9 have really gone for it! 120 pupils have currently completed a festival with three more still to come. Thanks to Mrs Foley for organising the festivals. Cricket After a disappointing loss at the beginning of the season, the Y9 cricket team have gone from strength to strength winning all of the remaining league games and coming 3rd in Somerset CCC Chance to compete competition. Notable performances include Rob Hun’s 62 not out against Writhlington, Olly Schutt’s hat- trick against Norton Hill and Henry Worle’s leadership skills. The boys will be looking for revenge when they play Wellsway in the BANES final.

Gifted & Talented A group of ten pupils recently joined with other pupils from BANES to attend a gifted and talented day at Bath University. The day consisted of lectures on nutrition and performance enhancing drugs and also some rigorous fitness testing by an Olympic Judo athlete. All the pupils had a great day and gained some valuable information.

DNA performance The Year 9 Drama group performed their versions of Dennis Kelly’s ‘DNA’. The play is a poignant and sometimes hilarious tale with a dark heart, exploring hard hitting and relevant issues, such as violence, guilt, solidarity and unrequited love. It tells how a group of teenagers do something bad, panic and then try to cover the whole thing up. However, when the group find that the cover-up unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where’s the incentive to put things right? The play was performed beautifully by our two casts and appreciated by the audience each night. The piece was all the more remarkable considering that the students involved were only able to rehearse during one lunch break per week.

Page 5: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

Sports Day There were some outstanding individual performances at this year’s sports day form the Y9 pupils. Olly Schutt claimed 1st place in the javelin, Kai Long 1st in the 80 meter hurdles and Ailsa Mackie winning a very close 100 meters which saw Libby Britton nearly faceplant as she crossed the line! Although no records were broken by Y9 pupils there was a great participation and atmosphere. Thanks to the PE Faculty for organising the event.

Inter-tutor group winners The inter-tutor group winners, based on the recent enrichment activities, go to Miss Butcher’s 9W. Congratulations – sweets on the way! Tutor group of the term The last tutor group award goes to Mr Chatfield’s 9C. Well done all!

Year 8 News

After losing against Wellsway in the first league game of the season, the year 8 Cricket team have found superb form with three wins in a row against Writhlington, St Gregs and Ralph Allen. The entire squad has shown an outstanding commitment to training, which

has had a direct effect on the ever improving quality of bowling, fielding and batting. As a result, the team have managed to reach the finals where they once again face Wellsway! Year 8 Languages trip Bonjour Normandie! We woke up early on Monday, June the 17th, to catch our ridiculously early bus, which left school at 5am, to Normandy, home of the D-Day landing beaches, a goat farm, and the Lion Sur Mer centre, where we stayed. We were all tired after our first day which included visits to a German war cemetery and a lighthouse. After a nice tea and a visit to the beach, we were all ready for bed. The next day was very busy. We went to the Juno Beach Centre, where the Normandy D-Day landings of June 6th 1944 took place, which was very interesting and exciting. However, it was also sad to see all the people who died in the fighting. A visit to the 360 degree cinema was memorable but also slightly upsetting because of the images we were shown. Then, a visit to a small town called Arromanche cheered us all up. Next on our itinerary came the American cemetery which was very moving. There, over 9,000 people lie dead and there were thousands of names written on the wall of those who haven’t been found. One of the highlights of the trip would have to be the goat farm which was a great event, as Aaron Madden, Chloe Sorensen, Ruth Emery and Mr. Mayer all had some goats’ milk straight from the udder!

Happy Days in the Normandy sun! However, I think everybody would agree that the real highlight would be B-day. This was on the last evening, when we were down at the beach and attacking Mr. Brown in the sea

Page 6: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

with seaweed. So you can see that even the stubbornest teachers get Involved! It was really fun in Normandy because the days were always packed full of fun and exciting activities. I am sure all the people lucky enough to go will remember it for a long time and we thank all the teachers and staff who put in many hours to make sure we had the best time possible! Francesca Sommerfield and Ruth Emery (8V) Oh la la les garcons!

CHEW VALLEY GOES TO BARCELONA! Throughout our five day visit to the Catalonian capital, we took in some of the most famous Barcelona landmarks including La Sagrada Familia (Europe’s biggest cathedral), Barcelona Football Stadium and museum, Park Guell, the beach (which we saw from inside the coach due to the weather!) and of course the local water park! Over the course of the trip everyone had a great time, we learnt some Spanish, enjoyed some great food, learnt to tango and finished our visit with a fantastic night at the Hard Rock Café! Tom Stewart 8c

Sports Year 8 continue to pull in some fantastic sports results. The girls’ team helped the school to win first place at the BANES Friendly Athletics Tournament by finishing overall winners thanks to some great results from Natalia Isherwood, Hannah Angell, Jas Phillips, Emily Payne, Ellie Arrowsmith and Jess Wyatt in particular. A special mention to Natalia Isherwood who finished 1st in the 100m race and Jess Wyatt for winning the 800m. On Sports Day, Natalia also broke the school record for the Long Jump and on a scorching afternoon, along with Jess, Amy McGowan and Oona Cardew helped the Moreton squad to break the 100m relay record. Brilliant stuff! The boys have also had some great cricketing victories this term and we wish them the best of luck in the BANES final against Wellsway on Monday.

Natalia jumps to a new school record! Readathon Year 8 have been raising money for the Readathon charity and School Library fund this term by challenging themselves to read as many books as possible! From The Hunger Games to Jane Eyre with sporting

Page 7: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

autobiographies also popular, the competition between the teaching groups was on! Really well done to 8LL (are you sure you didn’t cheat, Mr James?!) who managed to read an impressive 119 books! Jamie Cutter is largely responsible for this, reading an amazing 19 books! Well done to all who set themselves decent challenges – keep it up in the holidays! Tutor Group This term, the year group have been treated to some wonderful assemblies that different tutor groups have presented. From Cake Baking in 8E, amazing Balloon Modelling (8H) to last week’s inspirational assembly taken by 8L on the South African Gum Boot Dance, we’ve leant new skills and had fun watching students working collaboratively. Congratulations to 8E to win the Housepoint trophy and mascot this term! In Enrichment on 5th July, Year 8 had the opportunity to have an inter-tutor group competition of Danish long-ball. Never heard of it? Fear not, nor had many of us, but in essence it is a cross between rounders and dodgeball, and a lot of fun! Tutor groups were split into two teams meaning 6 matches could happen simultaneously. After some fierce hitting, adept catching, spirited diving and great teamwork, 8V (the Vipers and the Vikings) eventually came out as winners, with the Vipers obtaining the most points for any team in the whole competition!

8V stands for Victory!

Year 7 News

Welcome to the final newsletter article of the year on behalf of Year 7! We cannot believe how quickly the first year has flown by, reinforced by the visit of Year 6 pupils to Chew in the last week of their intake day.

There were many excited Year 7’s looking forward to greeting old friends and familiar faces, and I think they were quite struck by the fact they are not going to be the youngest year group in the school for much longer. Despite it being the end of a long, hard-working academic year, there has been lots going on to keep Year 7 busy until the very last bell! This has been no more evident than in the superb end of year monitoring reports that Year 7 received last week. We were astounded by the number of students who received all Good and Very Good judgements in every aspect of their report (there were a good number from every tutor group who actually had 100% Very Good scores!). It is credit to your continued efforts and should hold you in good stead for the challenges of Y8 and higher expectations! In the previous newsletter we were pleased to announce that Harry Power of 7H had been successful in designing our very own Gromit as part of ‘Gromit Unleashed!’. Given the name ‘Fruity’, our Gromit has been on tour around the school in the past weeks and will be off for a jaunt around spots in the Chew Valley area during the summer break. Harry’s mission was to encourage youngsters to eat more fruit and veg and we are very proud of his efforts. Harry was invited to attend the launch event in Bristol at the end of June and got to meet Peter Lord and Nick Park (Aardman Animations cofounders, behind Wallace and Gromit). Harry (7H) and Oli Burke (7A) are pictured at the launch event.

To kick off the term, Year 7 were split in half for a two day trip to Bishop’s Palace in Wells, in a combined humanities trip excellently organised by Ms Shuttleworth. The year group worked on giant field sketches as part of geography, and had a combined historical and

Page 8: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

PSRE tour of the Cathedral and Palace grounds. Mr Loynton’s highlight was seeing the troops get engrossed in character as peasants (with costumes!), to re-enact carrying pales of water and sitting at the grindstone making flour. Thanks so much to

Ms Shuttleworth and staff in the Humanities Faculty for organising the day!

We would also like to extend huge congratulations this term to Macy Edwards (7W) for her outstanding efforts on the golf greens! Macy is in the Gloucestershire county coaching programme for girls’ golf. Macy also plays at Knowle Golf Club. Earlier this term Macy entered the Gloucester Ladies County Golf Associations Junior Championships. She came in 1st place for the Nett Championships and won The Townsend Salver. She scored 97 gross with a nett of 62. The Gloucestershire Ladies president commented that Macy’s score was "outstanding". It was a very

blustery day so it was very challenging. The junior organiser at Knowle Golf Club, David Owen, said "To go round in 97 in that wind was no mean feat for an adult; it really puts her performance into perspective.” Macy is pictured with her trophy. Congratulations!

On the sporting front Year 7 House Captains did a superb job of organising and rallying their teams for Sports Day. All will be receiving special certificates from the Physical Education Faculty for their leadership; these will be given out in the final celebration assembly of the year. There was also success for the Year 7 competitors as part of the B&NES Mixed Friendly Cup event which took place in Bath on July 4th. The Year 7 Boys’ team of Cameron Wedlake, Aaron Sainsbury, Will Cockram, Zach Kavanagh, Finn Greaves and Ben Harding actually topped the leader board in their age category. There were also outstanding performances from the Year 7 Girls’ Team of Abi Sage, Lauren Palmer, Rosanna Lowe, Heather Laporte, Liz Counsell and Flora Mackie. Overall Chew Valley School came in 1st position as a whole Y7-10 team; thank you to all Year 7’s who contributed to this amazing result. On Friday 5th July, Year 7 got involved with their final Enrichment Activity of the academic year. It focussed on participation and team work (to echo the ethos set out at the start of Term 1!), as all students competed for points for their tutor group in an ‘Alternative Olympics’ event expertly devised by Ms Foley (Physical Education). An able and willing team of Year 12 students ensured the morning was

Page 9: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

a huge success in the glorious weather, with events including indoor New-Age-Kurling, boccia, cup speed stacking, golf chipping, basketball relays, and speed skipping. The overall results, and therefore our final tutor group champions of the year, are being closely guarded by Mr Loynton, only to be revealed in the end of year celebration assembly and no sooner! All I can reveal is that it was a very close finish! There are some photographs included below to increase the suspense:

We end with some comments from Y7 girls with advice to incoming Year 6 pupils;

Ashleigh Nicholls (7E): “The highlight of my year has been the sports day; there was a great atmosphere and good sportsmanship. My advice to Year 6 would be to try out all of the great clubs and take part in lots of activities!” Faith Denman (7E): “My highlight has been the BCA Cheer Competition; it was fun and nice for us all to be together. My advice to Year 6 is don’t be scared, get involved to meet new friends!” Brooke Kibby (7E): “The highlight of the year was getting to meet all of my new class mates and my tutor! Take part in all of the clubs that you can!” Millie Blacker and Zoe Watson (7H): “Our advice to new Year 7’s is to memorise where the important things are and then you will never get lost!” Stephanie Roe (7V): “I have met loads of nice new friends and teachers! I will miss them in the holidays! To all in Year 6, just enjoy your time at school!” Alex Simms (7V): “The thing I’ve enjoyed most about Year 7 is the new school experiences, such as clubs and classes. I think new Year7’s should get involved in as many extra curricular activities because they are very beneficial!” Hollie Tucker (7V): “I enjoy being at Chew Valley School, there are lots of wonderful

Page 10: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

teachers and a large amount of extra activities. My advice to new Year 7 is to make sure you behave and do your homework making sure it is handed in on time!” Amy Hitchins (7V): “I’ve met loads of lovely new friends and teachers; my advice to Year 7 is to take part in clubs as they are really fun!”

I will stop writing now, as I try and compose myself for the Thorpe Park end of year reward trip in a few days time when I will no doubt be forced by our kind students (!) to climb aboard various white-knuckle scream fests! Mr Loynton STOP PRESS: On the evening of Friday 5th July I went to a swimming gala and brought home 4 medals: gold in the 50 fly, gold in the 50 backstroke, gold in the 50 breaststroke and silver in the 50 freestyle. On Saturday 6th July I went to another swimming gala in Weston Super Mare and brought home more medals: bronze in 50m breaststroke and a few finals medals, finishing 5th in 100m Backstroke in a time of 1.22.02 and 7th in the 50m fly in a time of 37.28. I was also 7th in the 100m Individual medley. On Sunday I went back for more! This time I won a silver in 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1.30.96, a bronze in 200m breaststroke in a time of 3.18.26 and finals medal in 50m backstroke. I have qualified for the Welsh Nationals next year. Lily Booker 7L STOP PRESS: The Year 7 Reading Challenge of Term 5 was officially won by 7L! Ms Powell was immensely proud of their efforts. 7L did so well that their pile of books exceeded the average height of a Year 7 student! In fact they smashed this target and the librarian ended up having to snake their photocopied book spines across the library ceiling. Congratulations to all involved and to Fletcher O’Hara who read the book that actually took 7L over the target line. They have been celebrating this term with a massive tub of jellied ‘book worm’ sweets and an endless stock of Guinness Record books to browse during registrations.

Year 7 & 8 Tennis

Not only has Andy Murray had great success on the tennis court recently, but so has the

year 7 & 8 boys tennis team at Chew Valley School.

After Finn McDonald, Ollie Lowe, Finn Greaves and Will Cockram (myself) won the BANES tennis tournament beating Writhlington (who qualified in 2nd place) and St.Greg’s by a large margin on 10th June, 2013 we went through to the county stages held at Bath University on 5th July, 2013.

We played against other schools from all over Avon including: Clevedon, St Beads A&B, Writhlington and (eventual winners, winning against us by 1 game) Mangotsfield. Chew Valley School came 2nd in Avon along with the year 7 & 8 girls, who also came second and did very well also.

Counselling Services

The school currently employs two counsellors on a part-time basis to support students. From September we will be offering even more support to our students and parents through a counselling service to be provided through a new initiative between our school and Chew Medical Practice. Initially the service will be available from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm on Wednesdays, and appointments will be at the surgery for students over 14 years and adults. For under 14 year olds they will be at the school unless accompanied by an adult.

Page 11: CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 · 2013-07-18 · CHEW VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JULY 2013 . After all the scores were totalled, Moreton were victorious with a score of 903

Counselling will be provided by Health Works, the Community arm of the Counsellors’ Collective South West LLP (www.counsellorscollective.co.uk) and Alison Leyland will be our counsellor. In addition Alison is able to offer counselling to parents. Counselling for students will be funded by the school and adults will be invited to make a voluntary donation for their sessions. This is a pilot project which, it is hoped, may grow to be of real help to our school community. All requests for counselling support (either by students or their parents / carers) should be made to Hilary Taylor at the school and she can be contacted on 01275 334212.

Baby-sitting Job? Watch Out!

Lots of young people provide a valuable service to friends and family by child-minding and baby-sitting for some extra pocket-money. When it’s managed sensibly and at an appropriate age it can help develop a sense of responsibility and independence as well as providing invaluable experience. But Somerset Police have sent a warning to schools to advise pupils to beware advertisements by strangers. There is a concern that these can be an apparently innocent front for potential child grooming activity. The advice to young people is: only respond to unknown advertisements under the supervision of a parent or carer. It’s important to take every precaution to ensure personal safety.

National Finalist for Caterer of the Year

The school’s Catering Manager – Georgina Emery – has reached the final of the National Association of School Business Management awards for school support staff. Georgina has been invited to the Awards ceremony which takes place at the Park Plaza Victoria in London on Saturday 5 October 2013. Headteacher Mark Mallett said: ‘Georgina is extremely worthy of this prestigious award. She leads her catering team with wit and humour and copes with the astonishing challenge of feeding a school of 1300 from a 1950s kitchen! It’s not quite the miracle of the feeding of the 5000 – but it comes close!’

‘Georgina is an excellent cook, an imaginative caterer, an inspiring leader and a shrewd manager who is able to deliver extraordinary value for money whilst encouraging pupils to try new healthy food in a friendly and unthreatening way. Her abilities are only exceeded by her modesty.’ We wish her well at the ceremony.
