REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 28, 2017 PAGE 8719 It was noted that the Board was in executive session from 6:00 to 6:50 p.m. for personnel matters. 1. SCHOOL BUILDING UPDATES A. Amy Miller, Central Elementary Principal provided highlights to the Board on the

activities at Central Elementary:

1. Pre-kindergarten had a field trip to Slinky Action Zone. Parents were also invited to meet at Slinky Action Zone. 2. A “Jump Rope for Heart” assembly was held. “Jump Rope for Heart” is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association and students are in the process of raising funds. 3. Valentine parties were held for all classes. 4. During Dr. Seuss week, second grade students read to the kindergarten students.

Also, during this week, there are “dress-up” days, daily trivia, and community members are invited to come in to read to the students.

B. George Knisely, Middle School Principal informed the Board on the Middle School

activities: 1. Throughout the school year, our students collect box tops. Box tops are turned in to the Middle School PTO and they send them in for money to help fund

school activities. Each grade level has an overall winning room, plus there is an overall grand winner. Students from the winning rooms are rewarded with a pie in the face assembly, where they will be able to throw a pie in the face of one of their favorite teachers. The winning rooms were:

3rd grade – Mrs. Grubb

4th grade – Mrs. Gathers

5th grade – Mr. Meck

6th grade – Mrs. Gebrosky

7th grade – Mrs. Mishler 2. On February 10th, Brian Bence entertained students with a magic show. Mr. Bence is

a 1983 graduate of Chestnut Ridge and is currently living in Virginia. He has been dabbing in magic for over twenty years.

3. On February 16th, the Middle School PTO sponsored a Daddy Daughter Dance from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Middle School. There were over 100 male adult family members participating with our female students in grades 3 through 7. Everyone was dressed in formal attire. Each group was given the opportunity to get a formal picture for a keepsake. On March 10th, there will be a Mother Son event.

4. On February 8th, Trooper McGarvey from the Pennsylvania State Police presented information about Camp Cadet to our 6th and 7th grade students. The camp is designed to bring a better understanding to youth about law enforcement activities,

while living in the atmosphere of the State Policy Academy. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline, the ability to make new friends and work with them as a team. Camp Cadet is held at Camp Living Water from June 18-23, 2017. Interested students must apply for camp and go through an interview process before being accepted.

5. On Friday, March 3rd, from 5 to 7 p.m., Chestnut Ridge Middle School will hold their annual Science Fair and Art Show. Everyone is invited to attend.

C. Max Shoemaker, High School Principal updated the Board on the high school activities: 1. The high school Forensics team made history at the forensics competition in

Johnstown. Fifteen students competed with five students advancing to the State championship, which will be held at Bloomsburg University in March, 2017. The students advancing are Kaitlin MacIntyre, Cortnee Parker, Kaitlyn Gibbner, Alexa Smith, and Kristen Mock.

2. The Rifle Team competed at a State event in Meyersdale. Twenty-six school districts with sixty-six participants competed. The Chestnut Ridge team finished fourth. Camden Criswell placed first in the prone position and was third overall.

3. On March 17, 18 and 19, 2017, High school students will be performing a musical “Seussical the Musical” in the Middle School auditorium.

4. Four Chestnut Ridge School wrestlers placed and will be advancing to States at Hershey, PA in approximately two weeks. Dylan Williams and Justin McCoy placed first at I.U.P. and Jared McGill and Morgan Deremer received second place awards.

D. Mark Kudlawiec, Superintendent mentioned that Charles Corle, Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds will be giving an update on custodial activities at the March Board meeting. 2.
