This will mean that we can increase the range of sports that we can offer here at Chestnut Grove (both within the curriculum and extra-curricular), as well as providing a new resource for the local community outside of school hours. The LMCT like to encourage inactive people into sport, so over the next year we will be surveying students’ attitudes to sport and physical activity, and trying to provide a range of opportunities to encourage more exercise in response to this. MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

5K for 5KI would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who went along to support the Friends of Chestnut Grove’s fun run last Saturday to raise some much needed funds for the school. It was a great success and a wonderful community event which raised a considerable amount of money for the school. The Friends of Chestnut Grove are currently aiming to raise £5k to purchase an outside canopy to extend the capacity of our new canteen.

Pump House PavilionLast Saturday I attended the grand opening of the Pump House Pavilion in Battersea Park as part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival. It was a wonderful event that celebrated the achievements of our art specialist students. There is much more information about the event later on in this newsletter but I would like to say a special thank you to all of the students involved, the families who came along to the opening event and, of course, Ms Keeble who co-ordinated the entire project. This was an extremely high profile collaboration between Chestnut Grove Academy, NEON architects and Elliot Wood structural engineers and I am delighted (but not surprised!) that they chose to collaborate with our very own budding artists. The pop up pavilion will be on display in Battersea Park until 21st May.

New Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGA)I am delighted to announce that we have recently been awarded £117,000 from the London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT) to create a new multi use sports pitch in our new grounds in place of the tarmac courts that would have been provided through the Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP). I would like to thank the hard work of our fundraiser, Sharon Noble, who worked tirelessly with the school and the LMCT to make this bid successful.

ART SPECIALIST

As Mr Kingsley mentioned above, on Saturday 6th May, the Pump House Pavilion was opened to the public. The Pavilion was designed by Neon Architects and a selection of Art Specialist students from years 7 to 9. Art Specialist students were involved in the selection process of the design team involved in the project and participated in numerous workshops. The first workshop was a site visit, where the students explored the park and how the park was used. Students investigated the Pump House itself and came up with many design ideas about how the function of the Pump House could be incorporated into the design of the Pavilion. The following workshops were based around the exploration of materials to create structural forms. The final design for the pavilion is a brilliant combination of design ideas from all the students involved in the project. It was wonderful to see the vision of the Pump House Pavilion become reality. Several of the Art Specialists were given the honour of cutting the ribbon to mark the grand opening of the Pavilion. The Pavilion will be open to the public until 20th May, so please pay a visit to the Pump House to view the wonderful project the students have been so fortunate to be involved in.

Year 7 have recently been learning about the Crusades and the medieval Islamic Empire. They have been thinking about success and failure of the Crusades and how much the Europeans learnt from the Islamic Empire. Year 7 are now learning about the Reformation, when Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church in Rome. Students have been, and will continue to explore the impact of Henry’s decision on the people living in England at this time and for centuries after the event.

Mr Taylor was very impressed with the work 7 Da Vinci completed on these two topics. In the pictures you can see newspaper articles about the Crusades and advisory letters to Henry about what to do with the church. 7 Da Vinci have produced some beautiful work and should be proud.

MAKE YOUR MARK on CHESTNUT GROVE ACADEMY

Following the email sent home last week, we are now ready to receive requests for our ‘Marking Your Mark’ scheme. This is an opportunity to help us fundraise, as well as leaving your mark on the school. • It may be that your family will be finishing their journey at Chestnut Grove Academy this summer –

but you would like to remain part of the school in the future...• It may be that you are excited to be part of the first cohort of students/teachers/parents in our new

accommodation…• It may be that you would like to be PROUD to be part of the school, and would like to help fundraise

to help current and future students…

Making your Mark – Brick Campaign We will be creating a wall of support on the ramp that will lead up to the entrance of the new building. This will be visible from the street and to all those who walk up the steps to enter the building. You can be part of this wall by ordering a brick, and having it engraved with the message of your choice! There are two options: • A small brick for £40 which

can have 2 lines of writing engraved (16 characters each line including spaces and punctuation).

• A large brick for £75 which can have 4 lines of writing engraved (16 characters each line including spaces and punctuation).

Page 8: Chestnut Newsfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/Chestnut… · Grove’s fun run last Saturday to raise some much needed funds for the school. It was a great

You will receive a certificate of thanks from us, and of course, you will be able to come and see your brick on the new ramp whenever you like! If you would like to order a brick you can pay via ParentPay, or by sending a cheque payable to Chestnut Grove School. Alongside this, you will need to fill in a form which is attached to this newsletter, or available on the website http://www.chestnutgrove.wandsworth.sch.uk/Chestnut-21 or by emailing Ms Noble on [email protected]

Be a part of every performance Our new drama hall will be a theatre-style hall, with 170 seats, providing a fantastic opportunity for our students in performing arts; those taking part in productions and also for those interested learning the technical and practical sides of theatre. However, a lot of our existing equipment will not be of the ‘specification’ required and/or will not fit into the new fixtures/spaces that make up the drama hall and unfortunately the building programme does not include providing this specialist lighting and sound equipment that we need. Without it, the hall will not be able to reach its potential in putting on performances, restricting what can be done and potentially resulting in students having to record performances for exams offsite.

We have applied for funding for the lighting and sound systems through trusts, but we are also asking the school community to consider supporting us by naming a seat in the new theatre. If performing arts has been a large part of your CGA journey, this is for you. You can play your part by spending £50 and having a small plaque engraved with three lines of your choice, giving you a permanent presence in the theatre. (Maximum 20 characters per line). Even if we name just half of the seats, this will provide half of the funding that we need towards the lighting and sound! If you would like to order a plaque you can pay via ParentPay, or by sending a cheque payable to Chestnut Grove School. Alongside this, you will need to fill in a form which is attached to this newsletter or available on the website http://www.chestnutgrove.wandsworth.sch.uk/Chestnut-21 or by emailing Ms Noble on [email protected]

Are you booking your summer holiday?

Don’t forget that you can do this through Easy Fundraising and make money for the school without it costing you any money. So far this has raised us nearly £400 in total! Please go through the following link, register and then shop as normal!

PBE

On March 16th, a group of our year 7 students were able to attend the annual Faith Direct conference at Wandsworth Town Hall. At the event, students were able to discuss a range of topical issues with representatives from Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Baha’i, Humanist and Buddhist communities. The event was a brilliant opportunity to promote tolerance, respect and understanding through an open dialogue, and our students certainly maintained these values throughout the day. Well done to Polly, Joe, Suhail, Lola, Olasupo, Oluwanifemi, Sebastiano, Clara, Esme and Molly for the fantastic questions they asked to the speakers, and for their exceptional manners throughout the event.

VISUAL ARTS

The Year 11 Visual Arts group visited the Saatchi exhibition ‘Selfie to Self expression’ in Sloane Square last week and it was fantastic! It was such a broad and exciting exhibition of contemporary work and students and teachers came away very inspired. Students will use what they saw to develop their coursework final pieces. If you get a chance to go we highly recommend, and it’s free!

CHESTNUT GROVE’S GOT TALENT...

On Friday, May 5th, 30 brave students took to the stage to show Chestnut Grove their talent. With an array of performances from magic, poets, dance, insturmentalists, bands and singing, the audience were wowed from start to finish. Congratulations to performers Leianna Grant (9 Hepworth) and Mila and Gabriel (8 Blake/Kapoor) who went home with the honour of runners up, however the show was well and truly stolen by Robin West (7 Hepworth) and her fingers on the piano. Robin performed a beautiful piece she composed herself and was absolutely amazing during her time on stage.

The evening raised an incredible £338.70 for the charity Street Child who help orphans of the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone get off the streets and into education. Mrs Ong will be travelling to Sierra Leone in the half term with Street Child to visit some of the projects that this money will fund! Thanks to Mr Wilson, Mr Baker, Mr Proudfoot and Ms Robertson who judged the show and to Larry Smith, who hosted the evening.

Rehearsals for Les Miserables are now well underway and students are working really hard to create this epic show. We have staged the first few scenes and despite having to remember words, harmonies and movement the students are really starting to perform and it is great to see such a complex and ambitious show slowly come to life. We are also in the process of hiring the set and costumes (including a giant barricade!) so be sure not to miss the show which is on from the 3rd to the 5th July at 7.30pm in the drama hall. If your son/daughter is in Les Miserables please see the rehearsal schedule so that you know when they are needed for rehearsals. We would be very grateful if you could encourage your son/daughter to use the rehearsal schedule to learn the lines of the song/scene before they are due to rehearse it. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the show.

YEAR TEAMS

YEAR 7

The year 7 exams are approaching this week and I am delighted to say that most students are preparing themselves really well. Lots of them have said they are revising hard and were brilliantly behaved in today’s assembly on revision with Ms Gosling. I have visited the students this week and they are showing impressive learning in all subjects and exploring interesting topics across the school. In geography I peeked into a lesson where they are designing and exploring cities, in science they were experimenting with forces and levers and a second class were excitedly looking into chemical compounds. I have the pleasure to teach 7 Blake who are looking into the plight of endangered animals and making clocks from wood and plastic which promote a charity helping these animals. However, I have been greatly impressed by the outstanding achievements each tutor group has made to form a solid team and represent their group in the Year 7 football tournament. The other students in the forms have supported them greatly; shouting from the side line in encouragement and creating fantastic banners in support! One student even brought along instruments! However, I was particularly impressed with Silas in 7 Da Vinci and one of our FBB members; as he showed extremely strong leadership skills as team captain but also showed compassion and thought for others by ensuring that everyone who wanted to play, had time on the field. A true champion of Chestnut Grove and our PROUD values. Overall a great two weeks, and a massive “Good Luck” for their exams, however I am sure their hard work and dedication to their studies will prove more fruitful.
