The Legacy Lives OnJaydon Sommerfeld Memorial Bursary

It has been almost a year since our community was dev-astated by the loss of grade 11 student Jaydon Sommer-feld. A life taken way too soon left everyone that knew this remarkable young man and his family heartbroken. As the community rallied together in the days, weeks

and months following Jaydon’s passing, we came to-gether to support his grieving family and to support them through an unimaginable loss. An online fundraiser was created and donations began

to be collected at schools in Chestermere – and thus were created the Jaydon Sommerfeld Memorial Bur-sary. In a recent conversation with Kenton Sommerfeld, Jaydon’s father, we discussed the memorial fund and the amazing support the family received over the past year. “We have had many people inquire as to how Jaydon’s

bursary ended up and how much was raised. We feel it’s important to let everyone know what the total wasand that all of these funds are going to where they were

intended. Our family is overwhelmed by the amazing support from so many thoughtful, generous people and businesses from Alberta and across Canada”, said Kenton, Sheri and Brady. The family has completed the required paperwork with

the Rocky View School Division to have the Jaydon Som-merfeld Memorial Bursary become official. “The final

total of $50,300.00 has been deposited into the Rocky View Schools account that will hold these funds for as long as they last and will now be managed by them. We are extremely pleased to share this final outcome”, explained the Sommerfeld family. Starting this June, Chestermere High School will be

awarding $500.00 bursaries to a minimum of four Chestermere High School graduating students to be used to further their education or promote their career ambi-tions. “These yearly bursaries will continue as long as there is money to do so”, says the Sommerfeld family. “Our family and community lost an amazing, precious

young man last June but if anything good can come out of this tragedy, we hope that his name and memories of him will live on for many years through this bursary that so many amazing people have been a part of”. As the 2016 graduating class of Chestermere High

School is getting prepared to make that long awaited walk across that stage get those well deserved diplo-mas, one beautiful face will be missing – that of Jaydon. When asked if the Sommerfeld family had a wish for Jaydon’s classmates, they responded saying:

“Our wish for youIs that this life becomes all that you want it toYour dreams stay big, your worries stay smallYou never need to carry more than you can hold

And while you’re out there gettin’ where you’re gettin’ to I hope you know somebody loves youAnd wants the same things tooYeah, this is my wish

Yes this is taken from the lyrics of a wonderful Rascal Flatts song, but it’s truly what we would have wished for our Jaydon and also what we wish for his friends and classmates. As Parents we want nothing more than to see our children (and their friends) become successful, to be caring, to lend a hand when someone else needs it and to be the best person they can. As we look back on the past year, we need you to know that we are proud of all of you! We are proud of your hard work, we are proud of the way you support each other, we are proud of the amazing young adults you are becoming.We know that for many of you this road has been

extremely tough, many have said that it just wasn’t the same without Jaydon and we know it wasn’t but you did it! You have pushed through and persevered. We are so proud of you for that too. Jaydon would encourage you all to enjoy and love life and make it all it can be – Life’s too shorts! He’s smiling down on all of you today just as he was when you each walked that stage this week. For your parents, your families, for us and for Jaydon – live life to the fullest and be proud of yourselves! Congratulations to the class of 2016!”

Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first profes-sional job.The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more educa-tion a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas.The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two mil-lion students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce.As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects.

Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads, and the following are a handful of ways to make those pursuits more suc-cessful.

• Hit the ground running. It’s tempting for recent grads to take the sum-mer off and have a lax approach to job hunting after all of the hard work they put into their education. But recent grads can get a head start on their competition by beginning their searches immediately after earning their degrees. Create a list of a few target companies you have your eye

on, and then tap into your network to find a contact at each company and reach out to that contact directly.

• Focus on a career path. Prospective employers prefer that applicants have some certainty regarding the types of jobs they are looking for. Take a career assessment test or work with a career counselor to narrow down the fields and positions that speak to you. Avoid the “I’m willing to do or learn anything” approach to job applications. Employers may see that as desperation.

• Don’t rely entirely on the Internet. Oftentimes, landing a good job re-quires reaching out to people in person. In a MonsterCollege survey, 78 percent of job-seekers said networking was a factor in their job searches. Standing out from the crowd may involve physically standing out. At-tend conferences or speeches from people who work at the companies you’re investigating. Don’t be afraid to shake some hands and introduce yourself to others.

• Think about what you can offer to prospective employers. Narrow down your specific skills and customize your résumés or cover letters to the specific talents you can offer each potential employer. Use examples that illustrate these skills from past school courses, volunteerism or part-time jobs. Your “quirks,” like being the most punctual person in your group of friends, may turn out to be the skill an employer admires the most. Consider developing a career portfolio that highlights your past achieve-ments.

• Do your homework before an interview or networking opportunity. Always be prepared before an interview or when meeting with some-one you are soliciting for job help. Research the company and know its background so you have an idea of how the company runs. Keep a list of questions at the ready. A knowledge of the company can help you stand out from other applicants.

Graduation season is upon us, and grads everywhere are lining up to receive their diplomas and degrees, which represent years of hard work and discipline. Diplomas may be simple sheets of paper, but those sheets of paper are symbolic of so much more. Yet too often diplo-mas end up collecting dust in a box somewhere instead of being dis-played in a home.There may be plenty of reasons why diplomas end up going from com-mencement ceremonies to shelves in the back of closets. Some just can-not find a way or a place to display their diplomas without feeling as if they are boasting about their accom-plishments. Diplomas incorporated into a larger collection of items can become eye-catching components of home décor.

• Practice feng shui. The principles of feng shui suggest the “fame” area of a home is the central area along the wall opposite the front door. A “power” area also exists in the center of the wall opposite the main entrance door. Such areas make ideal spots to display diplomas, awards and trophies that remind you of times of per-sonal triumph. If anyone asks, let them know that you’re dabbling in feng shui and these displays are fueling the fire of future suc-cess in your career and life.

• Create a gallery wall. Certificates and diplomas can be matted and framed just like any other piece of artwork. When mixed and matched with other framed pieces, they create a subtle, rather than boastful, effect. These certificates will blend into home décor and be part of a larger gal-lery look, providing visual inter-est and conversation pieces.

• Establish a home office. Diplo-mas are tailor-made for home of-

fices. When hung behind a desk, diplomas can give a home office a professional feel. Diplomas and other awards also can be housed on book shelves and mixed in with other symbols of academia, like ribbons, sports trophies and photos of classmates.

• Design a digital display. Modest graduates may not want their diplomas in full view at all times. Awards can be scanned into a computer and turned into digital images. Include an image of your degree in a reel that includes photos from your years in aca-demia. The images will rotate in a digital picture frame. Update the display from time to time to keep it interesting.

• Put together a portfolio. You may want to scrapbook awards and diplomas as you would other milestones in life. Purchase a sturdy binder and slip the awards into clear, protective covers. The binder can be stored on a book-shelf and pulled out whenever you want to revisit your years in school.

• Create a shadow box. Fill a shadow box with the diploma and some other mementos from school, like newspaper clippings or prom ticket stubs. The entire collection will make for a nice display you can enjoy whenever you feel compelled to take a trip down memory lane.

• Bring it to work. You may want to hang certain documents in your office as proof of your cre-dentials. A diploma can add an air of authority to the space.

Diplomas are symbolic of significant accomplishments in life. Explore the many ways to display it and be proud of the hard work required to earn your diploma.
