This is important in the endgame (especially when a pawn is involved) for he can block the enemy king from entering territory he controls.

It is white’s move so black has opposition. White can NOT move forward for black can maintain opposition. For example: 1. Kf4 Kf6 or Kh4 Kh6

Whoever’s move it is can get opposition. For example: 1. …Kc4 or 1. Kc3
