The reaction pro- ceeds with high trans-diastereoselectivity for electron-rich arylbutadienes but with low diastereoselectivity for the corresponding o-nitroaryl derivatives [cf. (Ia) vs. (Ic)]. The trans-selectivity for the latter can be improved by use of the chiral imine (VII).
