Addition of acetylenedicarboxylates (III) to strong CH-acids [Meldrum’s acid (I) or dimethylbarbituric acid (VI)] in the presence of triphenylphosphine provides access to highly functionalized 1,4-diionic organophosphorus compounds in high yields.
