Implemented projects in Central Asia • Project 5 “Knowledge development and transfer of best practice on CBRN import/export monitoring”:

- Reviewing import and export controls of biological (and chemical) items

- Item classification and related risk assessment procedures from licensing and customs perspectives

- Publication on “Monitoring and controlling the import and export of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear material: An introduction” issued and shared with the countries in Russian

• Project 18 “International network of universities for raising awareness on dual-use concerns in bio-technology”

- Awareness raising activities, UNICRI has also reached out to 300 students and young researchers operating with biological material with the aim of sensitising them to the dual-use applications of such material in bio-technology

Ongoing project in Central Asia Project 53 “Strengthening the National Legal Framework and Provision of Specialized Training on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Central Asian Countries”

Overall objective: enhance biosafety and biosecurity capacities within the Central Asia region by:

CBRN National Action Plan

- Serves to address and promote various CBRN related topics at the United Nations

Strengthening Bio-safety And Bio-security Capabilities In South Caucasus And In Central Asian Countries: Funded by the EC and Implemented by UNICRI

• Portfolio of 12 actions on Bio-safety and Bio-security in 5 countries, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan

• Actions implemented directly by 10 local institutions pre-selected by EC • Core activities included:

- Upgrading Infrastructure - Procurement of equipment and supplies - Participation in train the trainer courses in Europe and the US - Organization of local training courses - Organization of study visits to European institutions - Development of databases, reports, guidelines

UNICRI was tasked by the GP with preparing a "GP Repository

of biosafety and biosecurity projects and activities“

Online portal containing information on biosafety and

biosecurity projects carried out by the members of the GP to

enhance coordination between donors and international actors.

The GP is now online, access to it is restricted to members of

the GP

International Network on Biotechnology

- UNICRI in collaboration with the EC studied the short-term, medium-term

and long-term risks related to the advances in biotechnology.

- The report was the result of a scenario based study of the risks by a group of

both science and security experts.

- It recommended that the top down ‘arms control’ approach, which focuses on

preventing the production of biological weapons by countries, should be

complimented by a bottom up ‘networked approach’. This approach aims to

promote a culture of safety and security, through training and raising awareness

of the students and other stakeholders working with these technologies.

- UNICRI in partnership with the Landau Network Fondazione Volta has

developed the International Network on Biotechnology (INB), which includes a

number of universities from all over the world.
