Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language by developing learners? phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes? in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns. In the English language, there is no natural connection between words and their meanings.
Using a simple word like ?cat? for example, there is nothing innately ?cat-like? about the word ?cat?. In other words, the written letters making up the word ?cat? do not reflect anything about an actual cat. The word and its written form are agreed upon by English speakers and thus must be learned in order to communicate accurately and effectively.
WHY TEACH PHONICS AND PHONETICS?
Other than helping your students to grow up healthy and happy, the most important thing that you can do for them is to help them develop their reading skills. It is no exaggeration to say that how well children learn to read affects directly not only how successful they are in school but how well they do throughout their lives. When children learn to read, they have the key that opens the door to all the knowledge of the world. Without this key, many children are left behind.
