Christmas are once a Year. What a cliché! This time we will try to give you something more than just dull typical Christmas Issue. Lets have a look inside the magazine:
Marcin Karolak will tell us this time a lot about food. His two articles are sacrificed to the “24 h Bistro Bars” (page 10) and The Benedictine Abbey delicatessen (page 44). As for the first one you might find it useful while wandering in the city center, while the second one is a great alternative for a nice and tasty souvenir to bring home.
The star of this Issue’s interview is Kacper Lachowicz, one of the best known streetballers in the country, a great basketball supporter, personal coach and a close friend of Marcin Gortat, the only Polish NBA player. If you want to know what ‘Agent 76’ says about his passion, go to page 38.
The Take Some Advice Section occupied as usual by our talented editor Daniel Jochemko will give you a clue about the Burger places in town as well as his regular 5 Tips. This time tips on transportation which may seam tricky for foreigners at first sight.
Daniel has also prepared a virtual journey presenting movies, which were set in Cracow in the past (Entertain Yourself Section). You might find this interesting, especially after gossip, which says that Woody Allen wants to set his next movie in our city, has recently come out.
You will also find the continuation of our Hostel Guide, which we have started in the last Issue. You may find it very useful while traveling on a low budget, so take a closer look!
Our regular columns will appear of course, changed a bit though. Every bar, club is closed but you still want to party? Don`t get frustra-ted – it became very popular to save that kind of poor, lost souls like you. Twenty-four hour bars are getting more and more distinguished nowadays as they were never before! You will have more trouble with choosing one among many in Cracow.
This trend actually came from Warsaw, where one of the most popular places to eat and drink is Przekąski Zakąski bar. It is the place where the modern era of cheap 24h bars comes from. The main rule is very simple. You can drink beer, vod-ka, tea or coffee for 4 PLN (more or less 1€) and you can have something to eat for 8 PLN (more or less 2€). Usually the menu consists of herrings or traditional Polish dishes like pierogi (dumplings), pickles, trotters in jelly, sausages, black pudding etc . Sometimes it may look different but the reci-pe is always quite the same. You go for a traditio-nal meal and guzzle some vodka with that. Or the other way – you go there for vodka and eat a bit in between numerous shots of vodka you take.
Nearby the Market Square you can visit Amba-sada Śledzia known as The Herring Embassy for the tourists. Its name comes from the fact that it is located in front of the General Consulate of the United States (in the closest neighborhood of the consulates of Germany and France), on the other side of the street. And of course you can try a very tasty herring served in many different ways.
The other popular place of that kind is Pijalnia Wódki i Piwa. It can delight us with an old design reminding the time of communist era in Poland.
So besides having a meal and getting drunk you will have a great possibility to see how bars of this kind looked like at the time. You can also go to Krakowskie Zakąski. The name sounds familiar, doesn`t it? And the rules are also simi-lar to other bars of this kind. It works practically the same in Banialuka on Szczepański Square, which we have already reviewed in Cheers Cra-cow Magazine.
Kazimierz district will also offer you quite a few places of this sort. The name of one of them in Polish sounds extremely funny to the people from our country. Flacha i Kiełbacha bar in par-ticular, which means bottle of vodka and a sau-sage (it rhymes in Polish) but very colloquially. The other option nearby is Zakąski i Wódka – its name has associations to the bar from Warsaw.
What`s the punch line of the story? If you suffer from insomnia or if you are at least a vampire-ty-pe who sleeps during the day, you don’t have to be worried too much. You will be able to find places, where you can have as much fun as you like during a sleepless night. Cracow’s night life has so much to offer. But don`t forget to preserve the culture.

In a typical Polish
home, Christmas Eve supper consists of 12 meals. The number has
a symbolic meaning of the Twelve Apostles and twelve months of the year. Trying every
dish grants you luck through the upcoming year. The most common meals in Poland include: borsch
with dumplings (mushroom or sauerkraut filling). Some families prefer mushroom soup, which is also very traditional. Every table is full of fish, mainly carp or trout, served in many different ways. Other typical meals are
potatoes, cabbage with peas, cabbage with mush-rooms, dumplings with cabbage, groat with dried
mushrooms, beans with dried plums, noodles with poppy seeds, kutia, compote from dried
fruit, almond soup, different salads, cakes, pies like poppy-seed cake and
many, many more.

Preparing for
CHRISTMAS EVE
In many Polish homes prepara-tions begin a week earlier, how-ever traditionally everything is done in the morning of Christ-
mas Eve. The first thing to be done, is to dress up the Christmas tree. This is usually under the responsibility of the children. It is quite popular to hang sweets on the tree (which are usually eaten before sunset). After that families gather and prepare meals. Christmas Eve is a day of lent, so no meals con-taining meat can be consumed. After they are prepared, it is time to await the first star in the sky. The star is a symbol of the Bethlehem Star, which was seen by the Magi. It symbolized the birth of Jesus. Nowadays, it means that it is time to gather around the table and get ready for the meal. The table is covered with a white tablecloth a symbol of the swaddling clothes, Jesus was wrapped in. Traditionally, some hay should be put underneath it to reminisce the manger in Bethlehem.
There should always be one extra plate on the table, for an unexpected guest wanting a warm meal (alluding to Mary and Joseph looking for shelter in Bethle-hem). Christmas Eve begins with prayer, or reading excerpts from the gospel of St. Matthew or St. Luke, concerning the birth of Jesus. After that, family mem-bers wish themselves all the best for the upcoming year. Every wish should be granted after breaking tiny bits of that persons wafer, which he/she is holding. The tradition of wafer breaking is a typi-cally Polish custom.

Ok, so you’re in Cracow and there’s plenty of things to do. Sightsee-
ing, shopping, chilling and partying. In order to do all these enjoyable
things you have to move around this not-so-tiny city. Walking is the
best way to do it, but our legs are not made of steel and we have to
use other methods of transportation as well. However, traffic jams,
pricey taxis or problems with night transportation can be bothersome
at times and may ruin our party mood. But they don’t have to! Check
out these tips to make moving around Cracow at least a bit more
enjoyable.

1. Transport can be fun itselfTrams, buses and taxis are not the only ways to travel around Cracow and you may find more entertaining ways to reach various places around the city. You can roam the Old Town and Kazimierz districts driven in a bicycle rickshaw, an electric golf cart with a guide, or a horse cab. That’s for the ones who prefer chilling out. But you may also be more independent, especially during a sunny day, and rent a bike or even a Segway (check Segwaytours.pl). Your ride can even become an autonomous fiesta if you decide to jump on board for a tram party (check Trampartypoland.com),or take a ride around Nowa Huta in a funky Trabant automobile (or Nyska van) at a Communism Tour (check Crazyguides.com). Let them see you rollin’!
2. Tricky inspectorsNothing will ruin your mood more than losing your money while us-ing public transport. You have to beware of pickpockets in buses and trams, but more importantly don’t try to be smarter than the ticket inspectors (try to watch Hungarian movie “Kontroll” to see how they work). Always validate your ticket in one of the orange boxes, even if the trip is really short or it’s early in the morning after a party. Inspec-tors wear plain-clothes, so you can’t really distinguish them from a regular person and they work even at night, or really early. Some-times they even check the extremely crowded night buses. Fines are quite big, so trying to save money for one beer may cost you more than twenty of them.
3. A conscious returnIf you want to go for a party and have some alcohol, remem-ber that you’ll have to get back to the hotel anyway. Therefore don’t get too drunk, because a tipsy, disoriented foreigner is a real treat for some dishonest cab drivers (we have already pub-lished an article dealing with the common incidents of deceit-ful taxi drivers). Remember that taxis are also rather pricey, so night buses are a much better option. However, there’s not a lot of them, usually one every hour, so keep in mind that you have to leave at a particular time, or you will be forced to wait on a park bench for a long, long time.
4. More than taxisIf you simply don’t want to wait for a night bus and you don’t feel like taking a walk, you may take a cab of course. But it might get a bit tricky. Avoid taking one from a rank on the street, because you will pay about 30 percent less if you decide to or-der one by phone. And once you grab a phone you might want to order a service that is slightly cheaper than a normal taxi. If so, call some compa-nies that provide car transport, like iCar (phone no. 12 653 5555) or Car-O (12 623 44 33). Most of them have English service.
5. Forget about the carIf you came to Cracow by car you should forget about it for a short period of time. And I don’t mean that it will get stolen. Better just leave your vehicle at your hotel’s car park and choose public transport in-stead. Why? Because on one hand it is usually really hard to find a place to park in downtown Cracow and parking fees are not that low. On the other driving after drinking as little as one small beer is an offense in Poland, so your party options will get limited as well. Finally Cracow is a city of considerable size, so rush hour traffic jams are also quite common.

Let’s begin with specialities from a place that’s quite unexpect-ed to be found at the very heart of Cracow, about 100 meters
from the market square. Moaburger, located at 3 Mikołajska Street, is a canteen style restaurant with delicious burgers
straight out of... New Zealand! Not only are they fresh, with the best meat and home-made sauces, but they are also reaaaally huge. If you’re just looking for a snack it’s probably not the best place, but if you’re ravenous this is a place for you. During my first visit there, I was a bit curious about the ingredients, but after I tried the restaurant’s specialty, the Moaburger itself, with beef,
bacon, edam cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, gherkin, pineapple and beetroot, I realised that it’s really a fantastic
combination! For only 23 PLN. Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of beef, because you’ll find burgers based on chicken, or fried
goat cheese as well. Probably the best burger house in Cracow!
I don’t know many people who don’t like burgers, but if you’re one of them it’s not an article for you. If you’re a die-hard fan of McDonald’s it’s probably not for you either. McDonald’sWhen it comes to restaurants with a large variety of food, there are a few which offer really tasty burgers. The first one is Grande Grill located at 16 Rynek Główny. It’s basically a steakhouse and bar, where you can have various crispy, aromatic cuts of meat, so
no worries about the taste and quality. You will find burgers in the menu as well. They are a bit pricey – cheeseburger costs more than 35 PLN. However, their size, taste and restaurant’s location will make you forget about the price.
Grande Grill
If you want to go to the shopping centre you don’t have to worry. McDonald’s and fast food is not your only alternative. In Galeria Kazimierz you can visit Jeff’s, a really good American restaurant. It prides itself in Texas-style food, so there’s no doubt that you can expect huge burgers. For about 30 PLN you may have a real American burger with a ton of fries and coleslaw salad. I ate there last week and I could barely eat the whole dish.

If you’re looking for great burgers and you don’t mind going a little bit further from the Main Square, try Lovekrove & Radar Gallery, located at 17 Brzozowa Street, in the Kazimierz district. It is not only a beautifully furnished restaurant, with generously stacked burgers in the menu, but also an art gallery, in which
you can see some good modern art or buy paintings and post-ers . Burgers are delicious, fresh, inexpensive and they look really
good as well. You can also lure non-burger eaters to come with you, because Lovekrove offers sandwiches, salads, cocktails, tarts and even soups! I won’t lie, I really love this place.

As you can see, in Cracow you can find quite a few places with top-quality burgers scattered around the city. You don’t have to stay in line in McDonald’s or Burger King every time you’re up for a hamburger. You may just sit down in a really nice restaurant and enjoy something bigger, fresher, tastier, with the best-quality beef inside. As a matter of fact, you can’t say Cracow without “cow”.

The following guide has been provided for those of you who have
never considered a hostel as an accommodation option while trave-
ling abroad. Probably most think it looks just like one of those Ameri-
can scary movies, but believe it or not, the reality is much more safer
and funnier at the same time, than you would expect. Now read the
information below and think before you plan the next trip. Modern
backpacking becomes only a matter of choice, so choose wisely and
use your credit card quickly. Each year more and more people de-
cide to travel on a shoe string which doesn’t necessarily mean poor
conditions!

There are two options. First one is when you do it by yourself and it’s for free, and the other one is when the hostel staff does this for you and you pay some pennies, usually only the cost of the washing powder. So-metimes it becomes necessary to make your laundry, especially when backpacking for more than two weeks. There’s nothing that gives you more energy than fresh un-derwear. Keep that in your mind.
9. STORE
This is why you don’t have to worry when you forget your toothbrush or a shower gel. Hostel’s mini-stores include basic cosmetics (tampons, sanitary pads, deodorants, shavers), groceries (soft beverages and candy bars), but also some more important items. 11. FRIDGE
For those who still don’t know… you will find it in the kitchen and you are welcome to use it any time as well as all of the kitchen stuff. This might become helpful when you plan to spend some more time in one town, when the hostel becomes your home in other words. Fridge will save your food expenses.
Instead of eating every day in McDonald’s, prepare your meal by yourself, as you like it, and share it with others or at least with the receptionist. Important – always la-bel your food, always! This is how you’re gonna avoid a situation in which one of the starving guests deprives you of your supplies.

10. ALCOHOL & DRUGS You will hardly find alcohol or drugs, however there are some hostels that have the license to sell it. But still, even if they don’t have it, ask at the reception. Easy-going receptionists will share their own with you or order something with a free delivery service.
12. LUGGAGE STORAGE
A very helpful service from time to time. Especially when you arrive too early (me-aning before the check out time and your bed still isn’t ready yet) or when you leave a bit later (in the evening, few hours after the check out time). In the first situation you don’t waste your time waiting for the room. Just take a quick shower and leave your stuff safe and locked down. In the second one, you avoid waiting for your plane, train or bus and sitting on your suitcase. Take a walk for the last time and enjoy the town before you leave it.
13. TIP JAR
Last but not least. Hostels workers earn pen-nies. Most of them treat their job as a combi-nation of pleasure and mission. Cheerful, help-ful, entertaining and enterprising. They never expect you to tip in the jar, however believe me, nothing makes them more proud of the-ir duty, then a symbolic tip. Please remember that when you save your time, money or sim-ply a good mood thanks to one of the recep-tionists.
Hostel is something more than a place where you pay, you sleep and hit the road again. You will be surprised how difficult it is sometimes to leave a ho-stel in which you spend such a wonderful time. Sleeping with twelve complete strangers in one room can be distracting, but image how many new friends you’re going to meet. How many different cultures and types of behavior you are going to learn and how many fun experiences you will finally bring back home. Common sleeping, cooking, sharing a bathroom and drinking alcohol. Absolutely priceless. Talk to those people, use their knowledge while traveling. These are the things you will never find in any guidebook. Never hesitate to ask, never avoid the contact. Beautiful long lasting friendships and short one night stand love affairs were born that way. What great memories…

We’ve seen fantastic cities like New York, Rome and Paris in so many films, that we want to go there just to see some spots from our favourite stories. cation, we can just turn on a movie and see some familiar spots in the background.
WHAT ABOUT CRACOW?
Even though Cracow is not as popular a filming location as the ones mentioned above,
it definitely has not been forgot-ten by filmmakers. It couldn’t have been with so many interesting and beautiful places scattered around the city. However, couple of the most important movies shot in Cracow weren’t focused on pre-senting its beauty, but aimed to recreate some of the most horrify-ing events, that unfortunately took place here. Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”, recipient of seven Academy Awards, is definitely the best-known among Cracow-based films. It depicts the tragic story of Jews during the Second World War and Oskar Schindler, a man who saved more than 1100 of them. Of course many scenes were shot around his former factory located on 4 Lipowa Street, but you may also catch a sight of other parts of Cracow in the movie, even though they may not seem familiar. Szeroka Street, located in the heart of the Kazimierz district, imitated the centre of the ghetto, where the famous scenes of selection for forced labor or dramatic liquidation of the Jewish district were filmed. You can see many parts of Zabłocie and Podgórze districts in the movie too.
Andrzej Wajda’s “Katyń”, which presents one of the darkest events in the history of Poland – mass execution of Polish officers and intelligentsia by the NKVD in 1940 – was shot partially in Cracow

as well. Even though the city had to look like in the forties, you may easily notice places like Main Market Square, Planty Park or Słowacki Theatre. In-teriors of the Academy of Music and Jagiellonian University played an important part as well.
Besides these two powerful movies, some mas-terpieces of Polish cinema were shot in Cracow or its vicinity. “The Double Life of Véronique”
by Krzysztof Kieślowski tells a story of two nearly identical girls. One of them is born in Cracow and the other in Clermont-Ferrant, France. The mem-orable scene of their only brief encounter takes place on the Main Market Square. In Andrzej Waj-da’s great 1976 movie “Man of marble” you’ll be able to see Inwalidów Square, Railway Station and parts of the Nowa Huta district. In one of the fa-vorite movies of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, “The Saragossa Manuscript”, you won’t be able to see the city of Cracow itself, but large parts of this masterpiece were shot in Cra-cow-Częstochowa Jurassic Highland.

If you want to catch a glimpse of contemporary Cracow, 2004 action comedy “Vinci” is probably the best movie. Heist of the famous 'Lady with an Ermine' by Leonardo da Vinci takes place in nu-merous locations around the city and you’ll surely recognize surroundings of the Wawel Castle, Vis-tula river, Little Market Square as well as churches, bridges, or various streets adjacent to the Main
Square. This movie provides probably the most attractive presentation of Cracow among all of the aforementioned movies. However, it may not stay this way for long. Why? Kacper ‘Kacpa’ Lachowicz a.k.a. Agent 076
One of the best street-ballers of his genera-tion, a personal moti-vation trainer, master of numerous basket-ball ceremonies and tournaments around Poland, a competitive player and a heart of gold to everyone who knows him personal-ly. Kacper has always been known for his empathic skills, and thanks to that, recent-ly he became a mem-ber of Marcin Gortat’s (only polish player in NBA) coaching staff and a very good friend of his.
You are probably one of the most recog-nizable streetballers in this country. How does it work for you?I try to omit calling myself a streetballer. I am a bas-ketball player even though people mostly identify me with its street version. I do work a lot on court-yard playgrounds, but I think that calling someone a streetballer instead of calling him or her a bas-ketball player is pretty harmful, because some of those people just don’t have the opportunity to join regular basketball clubs.You travel really a lot organizing basket-ball tournaments and streetball events. What is next?Right now I’m in the middle of organizing the annual Marcin Gortat’s basketball camp. Olsztyn, Siedlce and Warszawa are the next three places on my list, but in the meantime I will be visiting Bren-na, Rogoźno and … I can’t remember, really, I have such a tight schedule. If you could tell us how a basketball map of Poland looks like. Where people play basketball the most in this country?Wrocław is probably the top of the list with lots of streetball tournaments. Lower Silesia and Silesia are generally rich in basketball tradition. Cracow is big, especially during the summer. Pomerania is leading among the north parts of Poland that’s for sure. That’s probably because the top two teams in Poland are from Pomerania, isn’t it?Oh, that’s one of the reasons. Asseco Prokom Gdy-nia and Trefl Sopot are both very good European teams by the way. And that’s the place where money for basketball promotion is right now. Be-sides, Pomerania has a good climate for streetball, which is the easiest way of promoting this sport.Coming back to your own basketball events. What kind of people take part in your events?Very often I meet the whole families and that makes me especially proud. Recently I was organ-izing this tournament in Zgorzelec, where they made a separate ‘family’ category. Each team had to have a Mom player, Dad player and their kid. That is awesome! However, basketball is not the only part of my activity. What we are trying to do is

to ‘infect’ other people with sports and basketball is my number one personal goal.How does it look like from the back door side?Enter my website www.kacpa.pl. Call me or send me an e-mail. Simple as that [laugh]. But serious-ly, first you need to organize a tournament and then I come and lead the whole ceremony or we (meaning me and my crew) do a basketball skills performance, a dunk con-test, skills development training etc., or a motiva-tion speech. How about Cracow. I guess Juliada (big-gest annual streetball tournament in the city) became quite known in Poland?Juliada had already four-teen editions, however, some guys from Zgorzelec told me recently that their tournament is older than ours [broad smile on his face and laugh]. We had 120 teams this year, they had 150 or so in Zgorzelec, Wrocław has always above 100 teams. That puts Ju-liada on top of the list when it comes to the age or the number of contenders. The organization of the tournament is getting more professional each year and there’s probably nothing to complain about, maybe except the lack of the dunk contest this year [laugh again].
This year you were again the master of the ceremony on Juliada. Which one was it?Fourth or fifth, can’t remember exactly.That’s probably one of the highlights in your CV, isn’t it?Well, I’ve got more of them, even better ones then Juliada, however this one is really big.Tell us about them?Marcin Gortat’s camp is definitely one of them. Being
the master of the ceremony is only a piece of my job here. I’m Marcin’s per-sonal assistant and the one responsible for presenting basketball skills during the practice. You became pretty close friends with Marcin.Our contacts are very limited to the time we spend together during the camp traveling around the country, but yes, you can actually tell that we became friends.I guess it’s awesome to be a friend of a guy who plays in NBA?This looks unbelievable from a time perspective. You see, when I start-ed watching basketball in the mid 1990’s NBA players were like comic
book super heroes. Knowing one of them, actually knowing him, seems to be unreal sometimes. He must be a great person. Just came back from Afghanistan, where he was visiting Polish soldiers, right now he sacrifices his vacation on working with little kids and promoting basketball.

Like you said, this is guy is just phenomenal. Be-lieve me, I know how exhausting it is to travel around Poland and what I do is only a drop in the ocean comparing to what Marcin does. Only imagine answering all those numerous repeat-ing questions from media. And he always finds enough strength to patiently answer all of them. I really admire my mate.Coming back to the city of Cracow. Where else people play basketball?KNBA (amateur basketball league) is a great move-ment. It associates 600 players and is being played in two editions, so it’s always easy to join the com-petition. There is also Radwansport basketball and volleyball league for kids (http://radwansport.pl/). Twelve schools participate in the program. Besides that there are basketball clubs in town and some community playgrounds like the one in Jordana Park or my favorite situated in Academic Campus of AGH. That is the place where I spent most of my basketball life and where I will always be coming back. Right now it is being renovated and I can’t wait to see it open again.What about your nickname, Agent 076, where did that come from?That is a funny one from the times when I was play-ing in KNBA. Friends called me to pick the name on the jersey and I just said Agent, why not? That was the first thing that came to my mind, but looking back from a distance I strongly believe that I’m on a mission. I really know what I want to do in my life even though it does not always bring me financial success. My goal is to make people happy and support them in what they do, especially when it comes to basketball.Final one. When talking about your mis-sion, do you actually believe that basket-ball will ever come back to the level of popularity, which it had reached in Poland in the mid 1990’s?Oh yeah, no doubt about it. I mean I do whatever it takes every single day to reach that goal. Marcin Gortat’s camp is a small step in the right direction. Starting with kids. All they need is to sacrifice them some time. I remember when I was younger and attended basketball games. Taking a high-five from a professional player was such an honor for most of us. They need the same right now. The next step which I strongly advise is to broadcast basketball on public television like they did in the 1990’s. Here I see a big role of media to create the climate for basketball and people will come back. They already do and that’s promising.

The Benedictine Abbey
DELICATESSEN
Monastics are well-known for at least two things: their initiative mind, contemplating way of life… and
maybe also for the old, secret rec-ipes. It can be quite an interest-ing mix if focused on the Bene-
dictine Abbey in Tyniec, which is famous for many unique products
that Benedictine monks have to offer. This is the stuff that you won`t
find in any casual shop or supermarket. It`s delicatessen indeed.
The trip to the medieval monastery which is lo-cated more or less a 25 minute drive outside the town is one of the must-visit places when visiting Cracow. In the beginning of this story I want to tell you about some historical facts about the abbey in Tyniec, which has quite a rich history.
The Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec was founded by Kazimierz Odnowiciel the 1st (known abroad as Casimir the Restorer). The first abbot of Tyniec, Aron, was important, because he was also nom-inated as the bishop of Cracow. He received the title of archbishop, which shows the scale of his responsibility for the renovation of the Church structures considering the whole Poland. In the 14th century, the abbey suffered from several de-structions. One of them during the famous Tatar invasion. In the 15th century, the buildings under construction and extensions became Gothic due to fashion in those days. The Austrian authorities annul the abbey in 1816 not long after Poland dis-appeared from the map of Europe. But the monks seemed to be eternal because they came back in the 40s of the last century.
In modern times, the monastery became known not only for its evangelization priorities, but also for marketing policy. Monks are resourceful and inventive so they came up with an idea to earn some money selling their special products and believe it or not, they have a lot to offer. It de-pends only on what you are looking for.
Firstly let`s look at natural cosmetics. Benedic-tine Abbey has to offer many types of soap. Linen, marigold, oatmeal, nettle or with honey. And many others. Similar situation with bath oils, shampoos, creams or salves.
The monastics also know how to make tasty alcohols. You can choose between wines, beers, liqueurs and very popular mead. Their alcohol products are rarities well-known not only in Poland but across Europe.
They also offer spices like horseradish, mayon-naise and mustards, as well as, syrups, sauces and herbs. Your food can taste much better now. Devine even. And for dessert you can find as much candies as you like – the monks know a lot about them as well. Brilliant jams are on the top of the Benedictine list.
The Benedictine Abbey is also popular be-cause of the products with healing properties, such as healing juices or teas. It`s good news because after so many delicatessen it`s even better not to have any stomach revolution. No one will refuse so many great rarities and there is a possibility to forget about moderation. But don`t bother yourself – The Benedictine Ab-bey has a combined offer. They thought about everything or someone did it for them.

The whole tune consists of only five notes, but it`s highly recognizable throughout Europe and beyond. In fact – the author of that com-position is unknown and no one really knows the origin of that mysterious melody. The earli-est written mention of it is in civic pay records from 1392. The word “hejnał” comes from “ha-jnal”, the Hungarian word for dawn.
The bugler usually played to signal the open-ing and closing of the city gates. Especially at dawn and dusk. That can be useful to explain the origin of its name. The bugler of Mariacki Church calls The Heynal in four directions which is quite logical if we take into considera-tion that Cracow formerly has four main gates that aren`t nowadays so noticeable if we look on the Market Square.
What about the interruption of this tune? As you can hear, the melody stops in half meas-ure. The legend says that during the Mongol
invasion of Poland, the brave bugler devoted his life to save the city. He played the tune to alarm guards so they were able to close the gates when Mongol warriors approached. Unfortunately one of the invading archers hit him in the throat with an arrow so he couldn`t complete the alarm tune. According to the sto-ry The Heynal is suddenly interrupted to honor the brave bugler.
Although the legend is beautiful, the other ex-planation is much more simple and, of course, not so exciting. It says that there were four guards, on each tower of the four entrances to the city and they played the tune one after an-other. So when one of them began the signal, the other one completed it. The kind of coop-eration, that links music and military discipline. But as you see, it is quite more fascinating if we focus on the legendary origin. That`s what leg-ends are for.

Cracow is well known for legends, as you should all know. Nearly every building has its separate story. This concerns also the most important melody which you can hear in this town. I`m talking about the Heynal, also known abroad as Cracovian Hymn, in Polish called “Hejnał Mariacki”. Every hour it is played by the trumpeter from the highest tower of the Mariacki Church to the four sides of the world. Short tune that means so much for everyone that lives in Cracow and surprises the tourists every single time when it is suddenly and drastically played.
