What is Tellington TTouchTraining©

Developed by Linda Tellington Jones in the1980’s, Tellington TTouch Training (TTouch)is a kind and respectful way of working withanimals to help them overcome a variety ofhealth and behavioural issues and is nowwidely used around the world in a range ofanimal related areas.

ttouch recognises the link between postureand behaviour and uses body work, ground workexercises (where appropriate) and specificequipment to release tension and to promote afeeling of calm and well-being. this in turnhelps animals develop self-confidence and self-control and enables them to move beyond theirinstinctive and, often fearful responses withoutthe need to address the individual concerns.

the tellington ttouch has a profound andpotent effect on the nervous system and has apowerful influence on responses and mood.even well established patterns of behaviour oftenalter within a very short space of time.

ttouch can help with a range of issuesincluding hyperactivity, fearfulness (of noise, objects, vets, grooming, dogs, people), reactivity, sensitivity to areas of the body being touched, health issues, leash pulling, travel sickness, etc.

As a ttouch Practitioner, happy Paws withsue uses ttouch when grooming dogs to helpthem relax and during 1-2-1 and group Puppytraining courses. she also runs ttouchworkshops for pet owners and groomers andworks 1-2-1 with owners and pets.

For more information on how tellingtonttouch training can help your pet orinformation workshops, please contact happyPaws with sue on 07949 824491 or email:[email protected]

Your Best Decision?“I used to be indecisive... now I’m not so sure!”is an old joke but, like many of our well wornadages, contains that nugget of truth thatresonates with all of us without any explanation. Most of us have, at some time or other, had thatfeeling of wanting to do or achieve somethingbut finding ourselves feeling stuck or caught intwo minds and often followed by inertia, hesitancy or unhappy with the choice finallymade?Of course, on many occasions this is merely

frustrating while you decide whether to go to theItalian restaurant or the French one or maybe stayat home and order a takeaway... but then you’dreally like to go out... but... but... but etc!! However, when you find that you are unable to move forwardin ways that you strongly desire (for example, losing weight, stopping smoking, overcominganxiety or depression, feeling more confident),then it is normally an indication of a much deeperinner conflict. In order to move forward this inner conflict

needs to be resolved and if your conscious mindcould have sorted the issue it would surely justhave got on and done so. The problem is thereforemuch more likely to be beyond your consciousrecognition or processes and requires ‘fixing’ atthat deeper level in your unconscious mind.Hypnotherapy engages with the deeper part of themind and may be the answer you’re looking for.Having been successfully treated by a Clinical

Hypnotherapist for severe depression myself in1992, I subsequently trained as one and I havenow helped lots of people overcome the obstaclespreventing them from moving forward because oftheir inner conflict. Working with a qualifiedhypnotherapist in the relaxed state of a hypnotictrance, a wide range of issues, conflicts andobstacles can often be tackled and overcome soas to help you move on and achieve your goalsand contrary to the myths mainly perceivedbecause of stage hypnosis, you are in controlthroughout the process. (Hypnosis is actually anaturally occurring phenomenon and ClinicalHypnotherapy has been recognised by the BritishMedical Association since 1953).So, if you’re wondering how hypnotherapy

could work for you and what’s the best way foryou to move forward, call Ivan on 01455 446314or 07970 004993 for your free, no obligation, initial consultation.See below for further details.

Diabetic HolidayFoot SyndromeResearch has shown that there is a greater risk of footulceration that can lead to very serious complicationsduring holidays especially those taken in very hotcountries, hence the name diabetic foot syndrome(DFS). In a recent study among 435 diabetics, 17experienced foot lesions during foreign holidays, 10of whom reported a foot lesion for the first time. Those with foot damage were of younger age mostlymale and were of shorter duration than people withdiabetic foot damage from other causes.CAUSES OF DFS1 Direct injury or trauma eg. falling from 10th floor ofyour hotel2 Unaccustomed exercise eg. ten hours in flip flopswalking round the local Roman ruins in 32c heat3 Burns from walking barefoot on the beach4 Wearing inappropriate inflexible hard shoes. It is very important if you are diabetic to protect yourfeet top and bottom by using a strong sun factorcream whilst on holiday. If you want a further warningfor your holiday, research also showed that 9 out of 17people had to be hospitalised as a result of DFS, theaverage stay in hospital 11 days. The reason for this month’s dark editorial is that Ihave already seen 5 cases of DFS 2 of which Ireferred to their GP who referred them to hospital.I have just received from the independent diabetictrust (based in Northampton) whom I am grateful forallowing me to reproduce some of this research, alarge quantity of booklets DIABETES ‘looking afteryour feet’. Please feel free to pop in to LutterworthFootcare and take a FREE copy. STOP PRESS NEWS,FOOT FILES ARE IN STOCK.

Festival of Archaeology 2017Lutterworth Fieldwork & ArchaeologicalGroup organised a test pit dig on landalongside Lilac Drive as part of the Festival ofArchaeology. This is an annual festival withover 1000 events nationwide, many of them inLeicestershire. i D i Gazeley supported theevent, providing a grant for the purchase ofequipment.

Group members were joined by enthusiasticvolunteers of all ages from the local area withan interest in archaeology. Local residents andpassers by were interested to see if there wereany finds and to discuss the history of the area.

It was hard work digging the pits and sievingthe soil, the weather had been dry and the claysoil baked hard. The group was not deterred bythe hard ground or by the occasional showerand managed to investigate four pits over theweekend.

Finds were washed and identified, theseincluded some worked pieces of flint which

were probably Neolithic, shards of pottery andpieces of clay pipe. The pottery included somefrom Potters Marston, made in Leicestershirebetween AD 1100 - 1300, a piece from the footof a Medieval glazed drinking vessel and someslip decorated pottery.

A display of finds from other test pits in theLutterworth area showed the vast range ofitems that can be found in gardens and groundthat has not been disturbed in recent times.

Egyptian Belly DanceMy name is Katerina and i have been teaching Egyptian Belly Dance for 13 years. There aren’tmany people who can say honestly they love their job but i really do. There is such a widevariety of people who have come to my classes over the years from the youngest at 12 years oldto the oldest at 78!!!! That's the great thing about Belly Dance, so many people can do itregardless of size, shape or even age.

this type of dance will work not only the body but also the mind, you have to think about whatyou're doing a lot more than say an aerobics class which means that you really are doing a full bodyworkout. it's also very low impact which means that it's easy on the joints though you will beworking a lot of muscles which haven't been used for a while, if at all, so you will feel it afterwards.

Above all belly dance is fun, i can guarantee a lot of giggles during the classes. if after readingthis you’d like to know more about my new beginner classes starting in september please docontact me on 07845 886694 to get all the details. happy shimmying! see advert right >

Any age welcome. It’s great fun!Come and join us!

St Peter’s Church Flagpole RefurbishmentFor some time the flagpole at St Peter’s Church in Claybrooke Magna has looked ratherdistressed so the decision was made to dismantle & repaint it. A team of helpers successfullylowered and carried the pole into the Church so that the painting could be done regardless ofinclement weather.

the flagpole was presented to the Church by the late Brian Benford and is still regularly used. As part of the refurbishment the top was gilded by Geoff Agg so it now glistens in thesunlight. the pole is now reinstated and the team involved are to be thanked for their hard work.

The Inner CriticExperiencing an inner critic can beimmensely draining, with no respite, stripping away personal value to the core.

this dictator can paralyse us from growingas an individual; who we want to be and whatwe want to achieve. the impact of an innercritic can be weighty, often with the feelingthat we are not worth enough for anythingdifferent or better in life and is often deeprooted in our experiences or younger selves.

As crippling as experiencing an inner criticis, it protected us in the past (even though itprobably didn’t feel like that), guarding fromany further trauma, damage or neglect.

i believe an inner critic has two sides, beingboth good and hostile in nature. it matchesthe feelings of the original trauma or poorenvironment we experienced but haven’tprocessed. it functions by always beingprepared to ‘protect’ us and ourvulnerabilities from further harm, even in amore favourable environment.

What once worked effectively is often feltincreasingly restricting over time, in morepersonally unproductive ways. For change, the inner critic needs recognising for itsprotection, yet seeing that life is or can bedifferent. the ‘fight’ has ceased and ourvulnerabilities can emerge in the present andbe cared for.

sharing our life stories in therapy andunderstanding our inner critic can betransformational and generally leaving usmore peace and personally less constricted inlife. see advert above left for moreinformation.

TOO MANY PASSWORDS? TRY A PASSWORD MANAGER

Everyone struggles with the number ofpasswords they need to remember. As we haveadvised previously, it is not a good idea to havejust one password for everything, so with somany passwords being needed, how can youkeep track of all of them?Try using a Password Manager - this is a

program (or internet browser extension) thatallows you to store passwords in an encryptedform on your device. The bonus is that all youneed to manage it is one Master password.Your passwords are saved in an encrypted

password ‘vault’ and when you go to a specificwebsite, the Password Manager inputs thepassword for you. Whilst many browsers alreadydo this, a Password Manager does it in a moresecure, encypted way. There are a number of Password Managers –

here are a selection of the best known ones: -LastPassOne of the original Password Managers and

installs a browser extension or app for a mobile. Itcan even generate secure passwords for you.

True KeyIntel’s Password Manager is free to use for up

to 15 passwords, as well as a premium versionthat allows more. It also allows multiple ways toaccess the password vault – master password, second device, email or even facial recognition.

DashlaneThe premium version also allows synching

across multiple devices as well as two-factorauthentication.These are just three of the many Password

Managers out there but whatever one you choose,do make sure that it is from a reputable companyas there are rogue ones on the internet. Also you need to remember that whilst

Password Managers help you keep track of yourpassword security, you still need to maintaineffective security software and keep a cautiouseye on what you download from the internet. If you would like help with password security

BONES &GROANS

Injuries due to Do-It-Yourself Once again it's that time of year when people spend hoursdoing DIY projects around their home. The Royal Society forPrevention of Accidents (RoSPA) say that 200,000 people peryear present themselves to hospital as a result of DIY relatedinjuries. 40% are back injuries, 33% aches and painselsewhere, 20% cuts and 8% falls from ladders. The main cause of back pain is prolonged stretching andoveruse of the ligaments and joints in the spine. This causesthem to become inflamed and tender. This in turn triggers aprotective muscle spasm which gives rise to the deeper, dullerache that occurs over the following few days. The keymessages are planning, pace yourself and get help ifnecessary. If you have to move furniture for example, bendyour knees and use your leg muscles keeping your backstraight. Have the correct tools for the job. Do not wear loose clothingor jewellery that could get caught eg in power tools. Always cutaway from yourself. When planning the project spread the tasks allowing regularbreaks and changes of activity eg alternate stooping to paintskirting boards with reaching up to paint the ceiling. If using a ladder the guidelines are that the foot of the laddershould be one measure out from the wall for every fourmeasures of height. The top should be resting against a firmsurface and ideally tied on. Try not to lean off the edge of theladder to overstretch and reach further away; move it asnecessary.Anyone who knows me knows that I am not an expert on DIY.I delegate to the experts and get the professionals in. But I aman expert in the treatment of pain and injury.Treatment can restore mobility and reduce your pain andaccelerate your recovery. To see a Chartered Physiotherapist privately you do not needto be referred by your doctor. Lutterworth Rotary Big Bike RideWe had such good weather for this Rotary event for the sixth year running on 20th August.

540 cyclists set forth from Misterton Hall to cycle one of four routes offered – 11 – 23 – 39 and 62 miles inbright sunshine finishing back at Misterton at mid-day to a well earned Hog Roast provided by Neil GreenCatering, the event’s main sponsor. Drinks, cream tea and ice cream were also available.

Thanks to Mrs Craven we were able to use her well manicured lawn to relax and look out on the lake whichgave us a wonderful view across the beautiful Hall grounds.

The Big Bike Ride has become an ever more popular annual event and this year attracted over 100 morecyclists. Each year has seen more riderstackling the longer routes and this yearmore than half the cyclists tackled the 62mile route. It is hoped that the event willhave raised over £4,000 which will supportthe work of Epilepsy Action, RotaryDisabled Sports and other Rotarysupported charities.

We hope that in twelve months time weare again blessed with such good weather. It certainly beats cycling in the rain.

The Enterprise Centrein Lutterworth has closed due to lack offunds following a decision taken by thetrustees at their July meeting. TheCentre was for 12 years part of theLutterworth College and became anindependent learning provider withcharitable status in September 2016.

Despite an extensive appeal on localradio and television for a donor, nonecame forward and the staff were unable tofund overheads including rent. All fourteachers had already made considerablepersonal sacrifices and were unable tocontinue.

Centre manager, Jane Beaumont said,“the sadness of this closure is that the 30+students will no longer have the benefit ofour excellent practical facilities andpastoral care. some will be able to joinother providers but they will not have theone-to-one attention from teachers whomthey have come to know and trust”.

the Centre provided practical trainingand pastoral care for students aged nineyears and above and offered the facilitiesto the whole of the local population forlifelong learning of practical skills in asupportive environment.

the trustees paid tribute to the staff fortheir dedication and commitment to thelearners and made a presentation to eachteacher.

Motoring Matters!

Autumn DrivingLow sun and the return of icy windscreens!Stay one step ahead of the seasonal switch in driving conditions

BulbsCheck your lights every few weeks throughout the year but especially asautumn starts and we head into the darker months. Your handbook shows howto change a bulb but you might need a garage to change headlight ones.Remember the brake lights and number plate lights.

TyresThe recommended tread is at least 3mm for the winter so if yours is gettinglow, buy new tyres now before the cold sets in.

DazzleGlare when the sun’s low in the sky is more likely to be a problem at this timeof year. To improve vision:• Clean your windscreen inside and out removing the hazy film that builds up• Sort out glass scratches and chips – they can intensify the sun's glare• Replace your wiper blades if they’re worn, damaged or more than a couple of years old• Use a screen wash additive that’s made for the job – check the handbook if you’re not sure where to top it up• Keep a pair of sunglasses in the car and use the sun visors• Slow down if you’re dazzled• Use headlights to help others see youRemember:• If the sun’s behind you, it's in the eyes of those coming towards you• If the sun’s in your eyes it's probably blinding drivers following you too

BatteriesBatteries generally last around five years. If there's any sign that your battery’sstruggling now, it’s likely to let you down during the winter when it's colder, replace now to avoid hassle later on. • Flat battery? We can help you• Buy a car battery charger• Buy a solar charger• Buy jump leads

Antifreeze• Antifreeze is important all year round to prevent corrosion and improve summer cooling• It should be checked as part of the regular service schedule• There are different types and mixing them could damage your engine• Your handbook gives details of the correct antifreeze to use but if in doubt please give us a ring or pop in to see us and we will be happy to help.

‘Honest, Reliable & Friendly’

Leicestershire Speakers The Drop in Centre was alive with laughter whenwe held our August meeting. impromptu speeches were the order of the day, centred around the‘Use of Gestures’.

Gardening appeared to be a popular theme, we listened as miniature gardens were described; advicegiven about visiting garden centres and the politics of roses in one member’s garden – because of herallegiance to Richard iii red roses are banned. the word ‘rhubarb’ led us all down the garden path to amember’s rhubarb patch and learned a stalk of rhubarb with leaf attached is a fairy’s umbrella!

then on to human behaviour, an entertaining speech with an historical slant about the ‘handshake’was delivered by one member. During the course of the evening we were introduced to a long lost friend,a visit to india as a baby and a very wet trip to skegness!

Wonderful word pictures and gestures by one of our number transported us to the Palais in the1960’s. We could feel the excitement and atmosphere of the place as this speech was delivered. it wasbrilliant! moving on a decade we found ourselves sitting in front of the television enthralled by themagic Roundabout - oh for the age of innocence!

Leicestershire speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. We meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For moreinformation, ring Anne Jones on 0116 277 2295 or visit www.leicspeakers.co.uk

We also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.

BLABy BOWLSThe men’s league season has finished andpride of place goes to our WednesdayLeicester League team for completing thedouble. They won the Division 1 title easilywhen defeating Birstall and went on to beatGoodwood by 7 shots in a close encounter inthe KO Cup. Well done to the new teammanagement of Captain Alan Stevenson andthe 2 Rods as selectors.

the monday night hinckley triples Leaguealso proved a success with the A team finishingrunners up to Kingscroft, the B finished 3rd andthe C 4th in their respective divisions. the Calso lost 2-1 to Desford in the Ko Cup semifinals. the tuesday south Leicester triplesLeague, Blaby encountered a nervous last gamebut by 1 point hung on to their division 1 statusat the expense of the Banks.

All eyes now are on the england nationalfinals at Leamington. our men are representedin the triples by mick Greasley, Lindsay Fordand mick Poulton and in the Pairs by tomRenshaw and marcus Clifton.

Blaby’s Graeme Dudley and tony Paul lost inthe Leicestershire over 60’s pairs semis and ourLadies triple of Janet irons, Cath murray and JillCleaver did a super job in reaching the finals ofthe triples at Leamington but sadly lost 18-15 tomiddlesex.

the event is being run by the Canal & Rivertrust, the charity that cares for 2,000 miles ofcanal and rivers in england & Wales. the festivalwill bring to life the stories of what it was like tolive and work along the canals during the heightof the industrial Revolution.

the two day family friendly festival willinclude a wide variety of heritage and vintageworking boats, steam engines, a vintage fun fair, local food and drink stalls, craft stalls, boat trips

through the locks and costume characters.Foxton Locks is home to a staircase of ten lockswhich enables boats to navigate up and down thehill at Foxton. Built in 1815 the locks are 200years old and around 4,000 boats travel throughthis famous flight each year. the site is also hometo the now disused boat lift which was originallydesigned to speed up travel by bypassing thelocks before it fell into disuse in 1911.

Vicky martin, Waterway manager from theCanal & River trust, said, “our waterways are asmuch alive today as they were when they wereused to transport cargo around the country andare a great place to visit as a family.

this festival will give people the chance to getup close to our canal heritage and discover howimportant our waterways were in helping toshape modern day Britain. nowadays our canalsare places where you can enjoy a much slowerpace of life and, as a charity, we’re really keen toshowcase all they have to offer to a newgeneration of enthusiasts”.

Gilmorton WIGilmorton Wi ladies welcomed David Siddens to talk about the ‘Fascination of the EnglishLanguage’. 400 million people speak English today. For a third of those people it is their firstlanguage but it is taught as a second language in more countries than any other language. Englishhas the largest vocabulary, containing 615,000 words, so it would take three months to read all thewords at the rate of one per second. if you include scientific terms there are between two and threemillion words.

‘old english’ is Anglo saxon in origin and 96% of the commonest words we use today are Anglosaxon. st Augustin introduced the Roman alphabet in 597 AD, as used today. he also brought writingand parchment. When the Vikings invaded 250 years later they simplified our language. We often havetwo words meaning the same thing because they originate from either the Anglo saxons or theVikings.

in the 1450’s the printing press was invented together with paper. spelling was an issue due toregional dialects so the Government set up a committee to standardise spelling and the rules forgrammar were written down. When shakespeare came on the scene he invented 2,000 words but heonly used 20,000 words in total.

‘okay’ is the most common word used in any language in the World today! our next meeting isWednesday 6th september when one of our members will be talking about ‘specialist nursing’. if youwould like to join us please call marjorie Ridley on 01455 556722.

BROUGHTON ASTLEy Wiin August, Vanessa Savage, General Valuerat Charles Hanson Auctioneers told us howshe travels around Leicestershire andNottinghamshire attending valuation daysand cataloguing items that come in forauction.

she explained that tastes change andunfortunately these days beautiful englishfurniture and china no longer command goodprices. she comes across very interesting itemssuch as the small turkish leather case ofsurgical instruments, which would normallybe of a very nominal value but, datedDecember 1917 and with its connection to theGallipoli campaign, would probably attract

wide interest. items often sell for many timestheir estimate, like the Chinese vase, whichsold for nearly one hundred times its originalestimate! she then spoke about and valued avariety items brought in by members from asilver teapot, china and jewellery to an unusualpocket watch, a mechanical toy and a herbchopper dating back to the 1840s. Whatshould we be collecting these days? – oldkitchen tools and, surprisingly, early mobilephones and electronic games! it was afascinating evening. ella tonge from the Dogstrust is the speaker at our september meeting.new members are always welcome at ourmeetings on the second tuesday of eachmonth. For more information contact Franmarsland on 01455 282118.

Q: i’ve just been hired by a café as a temp.My boss says that because i’m a temp i’m notallowed to take any holiday. is this right? A: Your boss is wrong - as an employee you’reentitled to take paid holiday regardless of thecontract you’re on.

While they can refuse to give you leave atspecific times, they can’t refuse you holidaypay altogether. if you can’t take time off duringyour contract you should receive your holidaypay in a lump sum at the end.

how much holiday you’re allowed dependson the length of your contract and how manyhours you work.

First, check how many hours you’re entitledto by using gov.uk’s calculator. save a copy ofthe calculation to refer to, then speak withyour boss and explain that you are entitled toeither annual leave or pay in lieu of yourholiday - you can refer to your employmentrights on the Citizens Advice website. Givethem a copy of your holiday calculation too.

if your boss refuses togive you time off orholiday pay, put yourcomplaint in writing tothem.

should your boss stillnot give way get in touchwith ACAs, the freedispute resolution service that specialises inemployment.

For help understanding your rights, approaching the discussion with your boss ortaking things further, contact your nearestCitizens Advice.

Celebrating our breastfeedingpeer supporters in Lutterworth

& Broughton AstleyLeicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT)’sHealthy Together Team celebrated thegraduation of the latest cohort of trainedvolunteer breastfeeding peer supporters at aspecial event on 8th August in MarketHarborough Children’s Centre.

The event brought together health visitors, peer supporters, their families, children centreoutreach workers and local breast feedingmothers past and present. Carole Fishwick,LPT’s infant feeding lead explains, “All of ourpeer supporters are trained in everything fromhow to latch a baby onto the breast to theemotional impact that breast feeding can have onwomen. Breast feeding mothers provide a rangeof health benefits for both mothers and babies;they are less likely to have asthma, eczema, foodallergies and diabetes. Mothers who breastfeedmay find it easier to return to their pre-pregnancy weight and are less likely to developbreast and ovarian cancers”.

Local Health Visitor Jenny O’Leary adds, “Thebreast feeding groups which run in the area arewhere the breast feeding mothers can meet thepeer supporters. These groups are popular andare held in Lutterworth and Broughton Astley.Through my work with new and expectantmums, I know how important it is that mothersreceive the right guidance around breast feedingand how easily they can lose confidence and giveup. Being able to talk to someone who hasrecently been through the experience can be areal lifeline”.

16 ladies graduated after successfullycompleting the rigorous training programme atthe Children’s Centre, they are equipped with thenecessary skills and knowledge to support newmothers in the Harborough District as theyembark on their breast feeding journey.
