Zoological Survey of India, Calcutta

INTRODUCfION

Oribatid mites form a conlplex group under Acarina and cons,i~t of diversified ani·mals frequently designated as Hbeetle" or "mos.~" mites. They are pritnarily fungivorous, algivorous or sap~agus and occur in soil, litter, hUD1US, compost heaps, moss, lichens growing over tree stumps, twigs and l'eaves, nests of birdsl (Aoki, 1966), cave's (Moritz et al., 1971), lava caves (Yamamoto and Aoki, 1971), nests of ~lnal1 mammals (Bulanova Zachvatkina et al., 1974) and various other places, viz. pasture soils, coniferoUJS' taiga forest, arctic tundra (Bregetova, 1965) and even in subantarctic zones (Wallwork, 1973). A few s.p'ecies are slightly hydrophilic and still fewer are know-n to in:habit the sea (Willmann', 1931). According to Noorda\n, and De Vlicger (] 943) and Van der Drift (1951) Oribatei are the predominating group of inhabitants of the litV€!r. In fact, they occur in all ecological niches, especially w·here veg~ta.tive nlaterials decay in sufficient moisture and are penetrated by mycelia.

The lif,e cycle of oribatid mites passelS through four stage,~, VIZ·

egg, larva, nynlph and adult. The nymphs are subsequently moulted four times and passed through protonymphal, deutonymphal and tritonynlpbal stages before becoming adul.t.

2 REC. ZOOL. SUBV . .INDIA, Dcc. PAPER No. 83

India oribatid nlites were first reported by Pearce (1906) from Sikkim himalayan region. Later these mites ale known through a good number of puhlications from different parts of India (Bhaduri) and Raychaudhu.,i, 1978, 1981).

The total nunlber of species and ,~ubspecies of oribatid mites described and repor-ted from India till today December, 1984 stand at 17'6 disltributed over 118 genera under 56 families.

The !.lndetcrmined species hav~ been ~eported in this paper to record the distribution of the genera. Further attempts will be made to identify the undetennined specimens.

Authors are grateful to Dr. B. K. l'ikader, Director, Zoological' Survey of India, for kind encouragement and providling laboratory fac]ities. They are also grateful to DT. L.
