Program Goals The goal of this study abroad program is to provide Chemical Engineering students an opportunity to experience

chemical engineering education in an alternative international environment. Students will also learn about cultural

and industrial sites around Wales in the United Kingdom through organized course excursions. Students may also

participate in optional cultural excursions in London, Oxford, and Bath.

Schedule June 6-7 – Students arrive at Bay Campus of the University of Swansea and move-in to on-site accommodations

June 8 – First day of Class

July 10th – Final day of Class

July 11th – Students Depart University of Swansea

Location Information – Swansea Wales This program will be held at the new Bay Campus of the University of Swansea. Swansea University is a public research university located in Swansea, Wales, in the United Kingdom with over 20,000 students. The Bay Campus was built at a cost of £450 million ($600 million) and opened in September 2015.

Course 1: ChE 4410 - Chemical Engineering Laboratory (3 Credit Hours)

Purpose The purpose of this course is to satisfy the Chemical Engineering Laboratory course requirements utilizing the world

class laboratory experimental equipment available at the University of Swansea. The University of Swansea operates a

modern Pilot Chemical Laboratory with 15 pilot-scale rigs which cover a wide range of unit operations. Examples of the

equipment are shown in the photographs below. A video of the equipment is also linked. (Also see photos of Dr. Who

television series recorded at the facility.)

LSU Credit: Either ChE 4162 or ChE 3104

Two separate sections of ChE 4410 will be offered to fulfill ChE 4162 or ChE 3104 credit. The complexity of the

experiments will differ between the two sections.

Instructors: Barry Guillory will serve as instructor along with on-site chemical engineering support from the University of

Swansea Chemical Engineering Department. Mr. Guillory has 32 years of industrial chemical engineering experience

and 3 years of experience teaching LSU Chemical Engineering Laboratory class.

Course 2 – ChE 4410 - Chemical Engineering Elective (3 credit hours) Summer 2020 Topic: Mining and Chemical Processing of Metals

LSU Credit: This class will fill the requirements of one Group A Chemical Engineering Elective. (link)

Purpose This course focuses on metal mining methods and chemical processing over the last 2000 years. The course begins with

a review of historical mining and metal processing activities of Roman Brittan including: copper, gold, iron, silver and tin.

This part of the course includes excursions to several historical Welsh mines / processing centers. The course continues

with the evolution of mining, refining and chemical processing of metals. Students will develop an understanding of

how processing methods (e.g. chemistry, annealing, quenching) influences material properties such as crystal structure,

alloy composition, equilibrium phase behavior, and physical properties of metals (e.g. modulus, yield strength,

hardness). Metal processing, properties and their relevance to the industrial revolution are considered. The course

finishes with a review current mining, extraction and processing methods and the sustainability thereof.

……

Instructors Mike Benton will teach this class. Mike is the Bernard Pressburg Memorial Professor and former Undergraduate

Director. He has 12 years' experience teaching lab and lecture courses.
