Here we are back in full swing and ready to hit the ground running. Seniors should have theircollege choices narrowed down to the schools they are seriously considering, usually two to three. They should also have their resume in at least rough draft form. I am happy to assist with organization and tips on resume presentations. Parents and students should plan to attend the Regional College Fair on October 2nd, at Billingsly Student Center 3rd floor on the MSSU campus. It is a great opportunity to get information on a large number of different schools in a short period of time.

College Heights also invites a number of colleges, universities and technology schools to visit our campus during lunch. We encourage our students and their parents to take advantage of these opportunities to see what is available and possibly schedule follow up visits to the campuses. Students should always make a campus visit to any school they are seriously considering attending.

October 16th is the major test day for the high school students. Ninth grade will be taking the EXPLORE, tenth grade will be taking the PLAN, both which are feeder test into the ACT. Ninth and tenth graders who test very well will be taking the PSAT on the 16th and make up the EXPLORE or PLAN on Wednesday, October 23rd. Juniors will be taking the PSAT or the ASVAB. Seniors are encouraged to use the day for a college visit. Since Thursday and Friday of that week are teacher in-service days, seniors may want to take advantage of this great opportunity to visit additional campuses that may be located farther away.

Facelift

If you have been in the gym this year, you might have noticed that it received a facelift over the summer. The wall were painted, the floor sanded and repainted, and the bleachers cleaned. Every student at CHCS uses the gym and benefits from the different gym activities that the school offers.

Technology Update

The CHCS technology lab received new computers this summer thanks to donations. Our students have already noticed the increased speed and updated software.

COLLEGE CORNER

CHCS Missouri Boys State Participant

Joseph Massey (senior) participated in The American Legion Boys State of Missouri June 15-22 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Joseph was selected based on his leadership, citizenship, academics, and character during his junior year atCollege Heights Christian School. The program is designed to educate and train young leaders in functional citizenship, leadership and government. Massey’s accomplishments, positions held, and awards earned include: Citizen of Whitfield City; Member of the Federalist Party; Community Service Coordinator; Election Judge – Municipal; Policeman, Ward III; Community Service Volunteer. Joseph attended Law Enforcement School while participating in Boys State.

Summer Leadership

This summer CHCS students Abbi Hardy, Matthew Estep, Michael Crumpacker, Carmen Creswell, Dylan Hills and Hunter Jones, joined more than 100 high school students who were selected as future leaders from schools across the state to attend the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Leadership in Practice program. Leadership in Practice is designed to provide young Missourians with the opportunity to learn what it takes to be an effective leader in their schools and communities. All participants were students between their freshman and sophomore years in high school. With help from Missouri business leaders and educators, the students learned firsthand about how to successfully work together as a team and individually as a leader. The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry applauds the efforts of these future leaders and the potential they bring to our state.

Five YearACT Averages

College Heights is pleased to announce that the ACT average for the Graduating Class of 2013 set the record as the second highest ACT score in the school history! The final average score for ALL 2013 graduates was 25.3. This clearly surpasses the state with an average of 21.6 and the national average of 20.9. Way to go Class of 2013 and best wishes on your college careers.

Summer Fun!CHCS students, Kindergarten through High School enjoyed a variety of

camps during the summer months. Our younger students participated in Kinder Cougar Camp, Music and Art Camps while older students enjoyed Math, Science, Art, Technology, Robotics and Fix-It Camps. Summer Camps are more than just a place or activity. Camps are about creating experiences and are an important part of out-of-school time.

Summer Cheer!This summer the CHCS Varsity Cheerleaders attended

camp organized by the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). The Game Day style camp’s main focus was to teach cheerleaders how to lead a crowd and raise spirits. CHCS took home eight awards including the most prestigious award at camp – the Leadership Award, given to the squad that made camp experience special. Other awards included Overall Game Day Championship, Spirit Stick, Extreme Routine and the Banana Award for the one team showing the most spirit and enthusiasm during the day. The squad looks forward to supporting our CHCS Cougar athletic teams this school year.

Summer Science TripMr. Matthew Clay, Middle School Science Instructor took six students

and four parents on a discovery adventure in June. They visited the Everglades, Dry Tortugas National Park, and several other sites throughout the Florida Keys. Some students got to snorkel, swim with a dolphin and stingrays, as well as take in a variety of cultural sites. The goal was for them to experience nature and they definitely did that.

ECFA ACCREDITED – On November 12, 2012, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability announced the accreditation of College Heights Christian School. Accreditation is based on the ECFA’s Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship, including financial accountability, transparency, sound board governance, and ethical fundraising. November 13th will be the date for the CHCS annual fall Blood Drive and is sponsored by the NHS (National Honor Society). Blood donations can be made that day by coming to the CHCS Atrium between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm.

A NOTE FROM SUPERINTENDENT NELSON HORTON…Reflecting on our CHCS Family

Many of us here at College Heights Christian School often use the term “school family” or “CHCS family” when speaking about our school . Personally, I value that descriptive term and aspire to see it be not just an empty phrase, but a sincere conviction that grows deeper each day that we share this CHCS connection . Although, we may not be a family in the literal, legal sense, I believe there are many characteristics which do make this label very meaningful . We may not share DNA physically, but we can truly be one in Christ .

It has often been said that you can’t choose your family . It is also true that none of us gave a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to each classmate, teacher, co-worker or parent with whom we share this educational journey . However, if we individually strive to allow the fruit of the Spirit to grow in our lives and exercise positive character traits such as respect, unselfishness, patience and loyalty we can build a school family that is healthy and strong, in spite of our differences and individual quirks . Yes, we are all a little quirky! God delights in bringing unity from diversity for His glory and pleasure! Let’s each do our part this year to walk in love and build one another up by our words and deeds so our heavenly Father can use us to strengthen His family here at CHCS .
