OVERVIEW

Start a purposeful career working with children and ensuring their safety, wellbeing and develop-ment are achieved. This is a qualification for people who want to work as child-care workers/child care assistants in centre-based and family day care. Students will learn how to use organisational policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes in an inclusive way.

Recommended self paced learning hours per week: 16

Duration, Delivery & Assessment

• 32 face-to-face sessions - 1 x 4 hour class per week.• Assessments include: written & oral questions, projects and observations of skills both in a simu-lated environment and in the workplace

Work Placement

Practical Placement is a required part of the Early Childhood Education and Care course program. The time spent in the workplace will allow you to gain a valuable insight into the industry and develop competencies required for employment and help in making further career choices. Placement is on a voluntary basis, unless employment is offered by the host employer.

This course requires you to undertake 150 hours of work placement at a regulated education and care service. Students will be required to work with babies, toddlers and children aged between 3 - 6 years of age.

MCFE will help source work placement venues for students to complete their placement hours at, or students can source this themselves. Please note that for MCFE to arrange placement, certain criteria must be met, such as meeting attendance and assessment requirements. This outlined in the pre-training review and in the workplace agreement given at enrolment.

Location

Our main campus is located at U39 / 617-643 Spencer St, West Melbourne, but we also consider where majority of the students have to travel from. We try to group people from the same location together and hire out venues that are closer to home making it easier for you to travel to. The exact location of the classes will be confirmed once you talk to a representative of Melbourne College of Further Education (MCFE).

Fees

This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding. The course fees/costs depend upon eligibility for a Government subsidy, via the Skills First Funding Program. Check eligibility online via the Victorian Skills Gateway or call our office, please be aware using a funded place can affect your access to future funding

Resources and Materials

You need access to a computer or smart device and the internet to complete this qualification. Self-paced learning includes case studies and articles via Cengage Brain and there will be an additional readings linked via our website that you will need to access for learning and assessment. Students will be provided with text books - Birth to Big School and The Big PicturePicture, written by Karen Kearns and a MCFE branded polo shirt and name badge to wear during placement.

Entry Requirements

• Must have the ability to travel to and from placements - placement hours can be early starts. • If you wish to apply for government funding, then you will need to meet the eligibility criteria. • Must have access to a computer or a smart device and the internet to complete your studies • You must obtain your Working With Childrens (WWC) prior to commencing your placement.

Legal and Ethics

Learn the skills and knowledge required to identifyand work within the legal and ethical framework that

applies to your individual job role as an educator. We also discuss legal and ethical responsibilities such as duty of care and go through scenarios relevant to

theworkplace.

Keeping Children Safe

Children’s health and wellbeing includes physical,mental and individual health needs. Creating a safe

environment, administration of medications, sunsafety and infection control are just some of the skills

we go through. We will also discuss protectingchildren and their rights including identifying children

at risk of neglect or abuse as well as reportingrequirements.

Healthy Diets

Learn the skills and knowledge to promote healthyeating, ensure hydration levels are met and plan

food and drinks that are nutritious and appropriate for each child. You will also learn about food safety,

including food handling techniques.

Module 6

Providing Care for Babies and Toddlers

Safe and quality care for children from birth to 24months and ensuring that the children’s physical andemotional wellbeing is maintained. Implement safesleep practices, providing positive nappy changing

and toileting experiences and develop positiverelationships with babies and toddlers and their

families.

Module 7

Caring for Children

Caring for children over 2 years of age is focused onmaintaining physical and emotional wellbeing.

Learn strategies to build self-sufficiency, protecting the child’s self-esteem and helping them deal with

change. Promote and provide a physical environment and understand principles of scaffolding for learning and development

Relationship Building

Developing and maintaining effective relationshipsand promoting positive behaviour to create an

Personal Development

This module is about you. Reflect on your ownprofessional practices, self-evaluating and reflectingon your performance and outlook. Access and stay up to date with industry news and regularly review

your own practices. Determine any improvements or gaps of knowledge you may have and create a plan

setting goals and targets to achieve.

Module 9

First Aid in an Education and Care setting

Provide basic first aid and CPR in any situationwhether it be a child, adult or elderly person,

including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. Understand incident reporting,

workplace forms & evaluating the incidents and impacts to children & staff

Module 10

Health and Safety

This module covers legislation and workplacepolicies and procedures as well as identifying risks

and hazards, how to assess level of danger andreporting any incidents or concerns. We also go

through how to promote safe work practices andreflect on your own levels of stress and fatigue.

Module 12

Children’s Behaviour

Observe and collect data to assist in developingstrategies to support children who require additional

support. Understand how to identify any areas ofconcern and use positive support techniques to

redirect unwanted behaviour and defuse situations.

Module 13

Cultural Diversity

Maximise children’s connection with the environmentand support children to develop an understanding & respect for nature around them. Be able to identify

changes in workplace procedures to enhanceenvironmental sustainability.

Module 14

Development

Support the physical, social, emotional, cognitive & communication development of children aged frombirth to 6 years old in a holistic manner by providing

the opportunity for scaffolding learning & development. Use routines to practice skills & devel-op their fine & motor skills, create opportunities for

one-on-one interactions & join in play modelling best practices.

and not include biased comments and use informationgathered to plan programs that promote children’s

learning and development.

Creating safe, challenging environments for children to play and learn to enhance their development.

Understand different types of play, assist children toparticipate in a variety of experiences and knowinghow to respond to children’s reactions ensures each

child remains interested and challenged but notfrustrated by play and learning.

During the call back stage, you will be offered the opportunity to attend our information session where you will meet the trainer.

During the information session, a MCFE member will go through the training program, funding options and course outcomes. You will complete a pre-training review and the trainer will answer any questions you may have.

If there is no information session scheduled for your course, you have the option to come into our head office to complete an information session with MCFE staff or we will contact you when the next session runs.

An option to enroll after the information session will be available. Please bring ID to this session (Medicare card + Driver’s License or passport)

An email will be sent to you with our course brochure attached for you to look over and you will receive a call from a representative of MCFE to chat with you about the course.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) & Credit Transfer (CT)

RPL: You can ask for your relevant existing skills, qualifications and experiences to be assessed and taken into account when your level of competency is being evaluated. There will be a cost associated, refer to the statement of fees and charges. CT: If you have previously completed a unit with the same code as your new course you will be eli-gible for a credit transfer and you will not have to repeat that unit. There is no cost associated with this process.

Support Services

If you need support with progress throughout your course or other personal issues, we have a student services officer who can help or direct you to the most appropriate service. Your trainer will also be available every session to cover additional support if required. For further information on welfare and educational support please refer to our student handbook available on the website.
