This month’s issue contains news of the Club at the start of 2013. The second draw was made for the Charity

Calendar while presentations and celebrations have been held amongst the sports events and a full month of

speakers.

Editorial March; a kind of balancing act for the Club as it tidies up the events of one Rotary year and

prepares for another; the AGM being at the start of April and lists of committees in the preparation

stage for 2013/14.

The President’s Dinner at the end of the month was

the crowning glory, a very smooth affair which was really enjoyed by all. President Helen was relaxed

and made gracious presentations while the

speakers were on top form and helped the night slide past midnight. I didn’t see the end as there

was some problem with a glass slipper.

But no sooner than a few days we were into the big

draw for the Calendar Lottery. I must admit some nerves as the £1000 ticket was drawn. Would

everything go alright? After all, computers were involved and that sends shivers up everyone’s back.

All was well with a very worthy winner in Dr Ron Pyle of the Blairgowrie Rotary Club who donated

some of his winnings to the Club’s charity fund

George Delgaty skipped a Rink that won the Scottish National Curling Masters (over

60’s) Finals at the Greenacres Ice Rink on 10th March. They beat the holders Team

Nelson in the Semi Final and then beat 2

times past Winners Team Stevenson in the Final.

This is the First time that a Rink from Perth

has won it and we are all from the same

Club, Bank of Scotland Perth & District Curling Club.

Speakers 5th Mar Jane Laahs "Voluntary Services in Perth & Kinross Areas"

26h Mar Steve Blackett "Expedition to the Himalyas"

Steve Blackett made the journey of a lifetime to fulfill a long held

wish. His travels to the top of the world were a personal journey requiring careful preparation for the high altitude and the distances

to be covered. It was a measure of his whole attitude that he took another trek to climb another mountain in the peaks but failed to

reach the summit. Steve explained that to survive the trek was

honour enough and he was grateful to be able to be with us that evening.

Jane Laahs, a Voluntary Services

Manager for the NHS in Perth, shared her experience of fundraising, training

and taking part in the Malawi Bike Ride 2011.

After raising more than £4500, she

headed to Malawi to begin her cycling

challenge and find out more about the work carried out by Link Community

Development, which helps ensure children get a good standard of

education.

With John Cormack from Perth Kinnoull, and Sundeep Salins form

the Perth Club, he conducted the interviews on Sunday 17th March.

There were 6 applications, 3 girls and 3 boys for 4 places, with both Perth and ourselves sponsoring 2 youngsters each. They selected 3

girls and 1 boy and Perth Kinnoull will be sponsoring 2 of the girls - Samantha Kelly and Megan Cassidy, both 5th year pupils at St

John's Academy, Perth.

Ian has written to both the girls congratulating them on their

selection and subsequently spoke with them both. They are very grateful to Perth Kinnoull for giving them the opportunity to attend

the RYLA Camp and Ian will be arranging with them to visit the Club in August/September to tell us about their experiences.

Ian Brown has been hard at work behind the scenes selecting 2

candidates for the RYLA camp at Abernethy, Nethybridge. The girls

camp is from 6th - 13th July, with

the boys camp from 13th - 20th, July 2013.

Frank Muirden has been leading his

committee in the collection of monies for the Freedom from Fistula Foundation

supported by the Gloag Foundation. Here, Sarah Gloag accepts a cheque

from President Helen and Frank Muirden prior to the President’s Dinner
