Introduction On 26 July 2005, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, AC, Governor of Queensland, issued writs for by-elections in the Electoral Districts of Chatsworth and Redcliffe to fill vacancies in Parliament following the resignations of Mr T M Mackenroth and Mr R K Hollis. These were the first and second by-elections during the term of the 51st Parliament and the 375th and 376th for the Queensland Parliament since 1860. There were four candidates nominated for the Chatsworth election and seven candidates nominated for the Redcliffe election. Mr Michael Caltabiano was elected on the second preference count for Chatsworth and Mr Terry Rogers was elected on the fifth preference count for Redcliffe. Following the successful model used at the 2004 general election, a voter information letter was sent to all electors on the roll following the close of rolls on 30 July 2005. The letter detailed the requirement to vote in the respective by-elections and provided information on polling booths and candidates. The Commission is satisfied that this direct approach is the most effective way in which to meet the need to alert electors of the timing and voting obligation attaching to an election.
