IntroductionThe year 2013/2014 was challenging with quite some changes in our business environment. Don’t we all remember the introduction of the 9% OB, recrease in revPAR, decrease in tourism stay over arrivals, increase of apartments, membership cancelations, limited airlift, changes in Governments, Category 2 of our civil aviation, safety and security and so much more. On April 1st 2014 a new CHATA Board was elected, you might be wondering what happened during this past year. Creativity and determination were key ingredients in 2014 that led to short term strategic decisions for long-term growth. A new era for the private sector, with structural changes in the Association, introducing a more hands on approach, asking ourself, what can we do for Curaçao, instead of what Curaçao can do for you. Taking ownership in what we believe took courage and determination. The private sector could not afford another year of setbacks and disappointments, and the only option left was not to wait… but to take Action!

Let’s take the LEAD! CHATA re-introduced its Association focusing on sales, marketing and membership value, DATA and research to better understand the markets, strengthening relationships with key airline partners, wholesalers and made sure that all efforts being done by CHATA had a direct result in extra arrivals, extra nights and expenditure. Did we succeed? Our answer would be, Tourism Performance 2014/2015. We are growing, right? It was all about Partnership. ~

CHATA’s Board currently consists of 11 fiduciaries representing 11 parties holding a CHATA membership. Board members are competent representatives of the CHATA members and are elected every 2 years to ensure that CHATA members are provided equal opportunity to have supervision and say in CHATA operations. Board members vacate their positions by rotation of 2 years, the current Board of Directors consists of a group of Board members that have been elected in 2014, and another group that has been elected in 2015.

CHATA’s board, in conjunction with CHATA’s President & CEO, Lizanne Dindial, steer the association towards success by ensuring proper governance and by adopting and ensuring adherence to financial management policies. CHATA’s board has a dual mandate; The Board provides advice, guidance and moreover functions as a supervisory entity monitoring the association’s performance, enacting upon points of attention should this be required.

As we are progressing into the 21st century, CHATA has understood and wholeheartedly embraced the good governance principle. The Board of Directors ensures that CHATA embraces good governance in its day-to-day operations by ensuring accountability, transparency and equitability. ~

CHATA is a dynamic association and incorporates its dynamics into its membership benefits. CHATA communicates latest developments that are beneficial information or can affect CHATA Members in any way through several mediums. CHATA communicates through its monthly Newsletter, frequent Newsflashes, Alerts on situations requiring precautions, and annual Hurricane Preparedness Kit. These mediums serve to keep our members informed through digital communication, CHATA also has numerous interactions with its members to accentuate the benefits of a CHATA membership.

CHATA organizes a minimum of 3 Membership Meetings on annual basis, an annual marketing Retreat week in which members can express their concerns and brainstorm together with CHATA and the Curaçao Tourist Board on potential solutions to these points of attention. In addition to the Membership meetings and Marketing Retreat Week, CHATA also gathers the key influencers within its Membership portfolio in its Lunch with the CEO, in which concerns of the members surge. In order to tackle challenges, CHATA has several Task Forces in place acting as troubleshooters that advocate points of particular interest. CHATA also realizes that members require attention individually, and therefore regularly schedules one on one meetings with its members to provide a keen and listening ear and recognition of the members’ concerns while jointly brainstorming and, if necessary, working towards a solution.~

CHATA President & CEO, Lizanne Dindial is a fearless and innovative leader conveying and incorporating a dynamic and vibrant management to the very core of CHATA. This interview provides an insight in CHATA Milestones under Lizanne Dindial’s management and her vision for- and commitment to CHATA.

Q: 2014 and the first Semester of 2015 are now in hindsight, how do you reflect on this period?A:We have made further growth on our strategies and goals as put in our business plan. We have made a choice to become more marketing and data driven and all our actions are directed to achieve these goals. Tourism is still the most important pillar of the economy with potential to further grow. Slowly the awareness is growing, this resulted in the development of the master plan.

Q: Which developments in the Tourism & Hospitality Industry would you rank in a top 5?A:The strategy of CHATA to become marketing driven, to collect more data.The development of a strategic master plan for tourismThe realization of the JetBlue flight by forming a partnership between the private and the public sectorThe launching of the Small accommodation projectThe growth of our membership, 200 members and growing

Q: How has CHATA developed the past few years, and what should be done to sustainably and improvingly move forward?

A: CHATA has further developed as an authority in the Tourism business. People see and hear more of the activities of CHATA. CHATA lobbies with the government, has forged partnerships with the important stakeholders in the industry, has strengthened its relationship with its members. CHATA uses all channels e.g. media, social media, membership meetings, task forces to inform in the most transparent way.Moving forward we should have the master plan accepted by government, create awareness within the community and government. Make everybody realize how important tourism is.

Q: What is your perception on the 2015-2020 Strategic Tourism master plan, which was presented during the STMP Summit late June by the Curacao Tourist Board?A: It is a direction, clearly supported by data. My belief is that once the master plan has been approved it should be executed. Still we should be cautious and not focus only on the US market, but keep cherishing our existing markets and further develop them. As with all plans we should evaluate the plan periodically and adjust as soon as is necessary.

Q: How do you foresee the remainder of 2015 and 2016 in its wholesome?A: Very challenging with great activities for CHATA. In September on World tourism day, September 27, we will organize for the first time the Flavors of Curacao. This should become an annual recurring event where we will raise funds for our awareness projects and the HR related projects. In October we will launch our

new website. We will continue with the auditing and certification program for the Small accommodations. Of course we will keep on promoting Curacao in all ways possible

Q: What should be focused on to improve Tourism & Hospitality on our island on the short term?We should truly accept on all levels that tourism is important to Curacao. Make tourism priority number ONE.

Q: How do you see the Hospitality & Tourism Industry going forward to 2020 (long term)?A: If the above is realized we will work diligently on all other areas e.g. criminality, cleanliness, upgrading of the products, service oriented, we will become more hospitable and so on and so on.

Q: As the President & CEO, what are your feelings toward CHATA?A: CHATA is an authority in the Tourism Industry. It has made bold decisions to guarantee its members a good future. It is dynamic, marketing driven with a young professional team that is eager to go the extra mile. CHATA will continue to serve its members in the best possible way. ~

Remembering Nic Møller

Finn Nicolaj “Nic” Møller was born in the Danish town of Thisted on November 1, 1934. At the age of 24 he graduated from the Niels Brock School of Business in Copenhagen, with a Business Administration degree. In 1960, he was recruited by the prestigious jeweler chain of Spritzer & Fuhrmann in Curaçao, renowned throughout the entire Caribbean and the USA.

In the mid-70’s Møller had decided it was time for a drastic change in his career. Wanting to keep his family in Curaçao, he acquired the Avila Beach Hotel in June 1977. As owner and Managing Director he put all his means and efforts into improving, modifying and expanding this 45-room family hotel into a first class deluxe seaside resort with 128 rooms and 10 suites, a large conference center, three restaurants and all supporting facilities.

The resort stands out as a hotel with a special Caribbean flavor and intimacy, with beautiful landscaping and lush gardens, private beaches, and the personal touch of management and staff for which Møller was highly responsible. He attempted to teach every one of his employees to welcome each individual guest, whether in the hotel or in one of the restaurant or bars, and treat them with special care and hospitality.

As a lover of the arts in general and of classical music in particular, on numerous occasions Møller created the opportunity

for exquisite art exhibitions and concerts to take place on the hotel premises under the label ART IN AVILA and the hotel has its own recital hall, La Belle Alliance. As a classically trained singer (baritone) Møller recorded two C.D.’s: Schubert’s Winterreise and Brahms, Schubert & Friends.

Møller was also active in community affairs and the tourism sector for Curaçao. He served on the Board of Directors of the Curaçao Hotel and Tourism Association (CHATA) and also served as President. In addition, he was a board member of the Curaçao Tourism Development Foundation (CTDF).

In April 2002, CHATA (Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association) recognized Nic Moller for his lifetime contribution to the development of the hospitality and tourism industry in Curaçao.

On the occasion of the Dutch Queen’s Birthday (“Koninginnedag”) on April 30, 2002, a Royal Decoration (Knighthood) was bestowed upon Finn Nicolaj MØLLER, who was made a Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau.

Nic Møller was one of the pillar in our community and when he passed away on March 6th 2015, Curaçao lost a true ‘yu di Kòrsou’.~

Financial UpdateEarly 2014, CHATA took the decision to outsource all financial administration tasks, with the aim to increase member satisfaction by focusing on membership value. CHATA has partnered with The Business Factory for their business administration expertise. The Business Factory has been in charge of CHATA’s daily administrative and financial tasks with a strong focus on Membership Billing & Processing.

CHATA’s finance saw a slight increase in membership dues. Operational expenses were high, while membership development and product & marketing expenses remained well within budget. CHATA booked a negative result which includes the provision for uncollectable receivables and the unforeseen expenses for the retirement of two employees and for consultancy fees.

Expenses We have seen an increase in the operational expenses of CHATA due to unforeseen expenses with respect to personnel expenses and due to provisions that have been made for the uncollectable accounts receivable.

Accounts Receivable & Cash Flow The year 2014 ended with an accounts receivable balance of ANG 170,168, of these outstanding receivables, ANG 96,750 is considered membership dues.

PwC AuditAudit took place in February 2015, with a focus on a true and fair view of the financial position of CHATA. The audit included an analysis of CHATA’s financial performance and cash flows for the year. Audit was conducted in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards for Small and Medium size Entities. ~

Tourism Performance

The year 2014 registered several milestones in the secondary markets. Starting with Germany and its record number of 19,118 arrivals (+8%). Canada reached a new record with 12,468 visitor arrivals (+30%). Brazil, Colombia and Belgium accelerated their performances in 2014 recording respectively 12,049, 11,559 and 6,447 stay over visitors in 2014 (+11%, +16% and +7%). The European region registered 6% more visitors for a total of 186,238 Europeans compared to 175,849 visitors in 2013. From The Netherlands a 6% growth is registered or in absolute numbers 140,702 stay over arrivals. The South American region registered a 4% increase with the main producing country, Venezuela, recording a 6% growth in visitor arrivals. The North American and the Caribbean region decreased respectively by 8% and 14%.

The overall stay over arrivals in 2014 recorded an increase of 3%. All together, 452,042 stay over visitors were welcomed in 2014 reflecting a significant increase of 11,291 visitors.

Utilizing the ‘Turistika Model’, CTB and MEO calculated that for the year 2014 the tourism sector was directly responsible for generating $419.5 million US dollars for the local economy. ~

The year 2014 overall performance closed at 70.3% compared to 68.4% in 2013. The shoulder months in 2014 included the months of June & July. Caribbean Hotel OCC% in general was lower, but most destinations kept a high ADR/REVPAR. Curaçao had a challenge in 2014 to maintain its ADR.

Hotel occupancy figures for the 1st semester of 2015 (January – June) illustrate a considerable surge, in comparison with 2013 and 2014. Curaçao hotel performance registered a 75% occupancy in the 1st semester of 2015 which is a 5% increase over last year’s 70%.

CHATA is the heart and soul of Curacao’s Tourism Industry. The organization was created a half century ago, by young professionals with the vision to see that Tourism would be the Economic Future of the island.CHATA worked diligently to educate and inform Hoteliers, Restauranteurs, Tourist Shops and Water Sports entreprenuerson how to attract visitors to Curacao, and how to greet them hospitably. In addition, its efforts to also educate ourTaxi drivers, immigration authorities, school children and public in general, on why and how to welcome visitors, has alltogether paid off tremendously. So much so, that Curacao, today, is one of the world’s 10 most popular Destinations!

Of all the monuments which Curaçaoan’s hold dear as valued heritages, Downtown Willemstad is the largest and most one we have. It is not an inanimate, single structure or building. It is an alive and spirited complex, perpetually in motion and continuously growing. As such, it is our great tourist attraction. Many jewels sparkle in the crown of this royal heritage which we are so fortunate to

have. Among this crown are; the Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge, the Governor’s Palace, Fort Amsterdam, Handelskade, de Ruyterkade, the Synagogue, Water Fort, Rif Fort, Kura Hulanda, the Museums, the Cruise Terminalm Brion Plein, Gomezplein, plus many historical and architecturally attractive buildings, as well as elegant Sharloo. Curaçao is, without a doubt, one of the Caribbean’s most distinctive and renowned shopping centers.

As a consequence this downtown heritage, which we are all privileged to share as one of our finest assets, must be polished, protected and preserved by all Curaçaoans as a joint responsibility. It must be promoted and presented to all visitors and tourists as the remarkable distinctive attraction that it truly is. It is the heart of Curaçao. This means, of course, that the entire Curaçao community, to wit, government bodies, retail stores, private sector companies, cultural groupe, as well each individual citizen must partake in sustaining and maintaining this Downtown Heritage. So, let’s get out there and do it!~

KLM – Feeder Markets CHATA is proud to have supported the developments in the secondary European markets. Additional capacity has been added by KLM November 2014 and we have seen an increase from secondary markets to Curaçao.

Arkefly – GrowthWe have seen tremendous growth in the capacity of Arkefly with additional service being added and the introduction of the Dreamliner.

AirBerlin – Load FactorsCHATA is happy with the results of Air Berlin in 2014. Load factors have increased month over month with the support of the private sector having dedicated focus on the flight.

Destination Marketing Retreat & Budget – Private Sector Input CHATA is proud to be a partner when developing the marketing plans and budget with CTB. For 2015, the private sector has received the opportunity to provide input and direction.

New Official in Room MagazineFortress Interactive NV presented the 2015 edition of CHATA’s official in-room magazine ‘In Curaçao’. The new and improved, hardcover visitors guide can be found in all the rooms of over 36 accommodations on the island and at other strategic locations.

Guardian Group – Best in Business Award 2014CHATA has received a special recognition by Guardian Group for its bold changes executed in 2014.

Stars of the Industry CHATA continued to recognize its employees and supervisors during the year.

Market Place during ETOS, LATOS & NATOSCHATA organized a market place for each market where our members received the opportunity to meet with important wholesalers from the different markets.

Active Participation at Fairs & International Tradeshows CHATA attended several tradeshows and represented its members at Vakantie Beurs, ANATO, CHTA, IMEX, Sales Missions, ABAV, ITB, Meetings with Airlines, Wholesalers and many more! (All partners received a Trip Report)

Partner in Curacao Clean Up CHATA became the official partner/co-organizer of the Curacao Clean Up event, which takes place in September of each year.

Member Meetings, Task Forces and Committees CHATA organized several information sessions for our members on the different tax changes and structures and also on the trends in each market. Additionally CHATA focused on its task forces and committees.

Other achievements included, Membership Action Plan, Annual Silent Auction, KLM Marathon, Youth Awareness Programs, Culinary Team and participation at the taste of Caribbean, Year opening celebration. ~
