As an important component of creating a child safe environment at Berwick Chase PS, our teachers will be working with students to understand and identify their trusted adults. What is the definition of a trusted adult? Trusted adults are people that children can turn to when they have a problem, when something bad is happening or when they may have embarrassing or difficult questions. Trusted adults may range from parents/carers to teachers, other school staff or significant adults. Trusted adults are safe and respectful people and will listen when there is a problem. CPR / Anaphylaxis and Asthma Last night the entire staff participated in our annual CPR / Anaphylaxis & Asthma training. Thankfully the CPR dummy survived me and will hopefully make a full recovery today. It is timely to have a few key reminders: If your son or daughter is an asthmatic or anaphylactic you need to have a current plan signed off by a GP. A copy of this needs to be given to Annette so she can distribute it to the relevant staff. Please make sure all the required medication such as Ventolin and/or Epipen is in date and supplied to the school. Classroom teachers may send out individual messages to classes informing you that there is an anaphylactic student in your childs class and list the triggers. Please take this into account when planning the food that your child will be bringing into the classroom. If you are unsure please take the time to communicate with your classroom teacher. Severe Weather I think we can all agree that we do not want last Fridays weather to come our way again. I want to thank our office staff who were run off their feet answering numerous calls from concerned parents who were affected by the wild weather. Also I want to thank all the staff who did an amazing job comforting so many students who were quite rightly very scared. It was great to know that teachers and support staff showed initiative and ensured all the students were cared for and reassured until their parents could battle the elements and arrive at school. CPR / Anaphylaxis and Asthma Last night the entire staff participated in our annual CPR / Anaphylaxis & Asthma training. Thankfully the CPR dummy survived me and will hopefully make a full recovery today. It is timely to have a few key reminders:

Hats Just a reminder that the wearing of hats is compulsory

for ALL students from 1st August to 30th April. This is

the time of year when the UV index levels are 3 or

above. The hats must be the bucket style

or have a wide brim. Caps are not

acceptable. Please also ensure that all hats

are labelled clearly to enable them to be

returned to their owner if lost. Any child

without a hat, will need to

stay undercover.

Berwick Chase encourages all staff and

students to apply SPF30 (or higher)

broad spectrum, water resistant

sunscreen daily during the same time period. Sunscreen

should be applied at least 20 minutes before going

outside and reapplied as required. Students are

encouraged to bring their own sunscreen and reapply

during the day themselves. The school is unfortunately

unable to supply sunscreen due to many sunscreen

allergies throughout the school.

Lost Property As term 1 gets into full swing and you’ve no doubt

invested in new uniform items to start the new year, we

encourage parents to please clearly name all uniform

items with your child’s first and last name.

The staff looking after Lost Property do their very best

to reunite lost items with their owners, but often names

are unclear or not present, making them very sad. It

would also help for students to be encouraged to be

responsible for their property, checking at the end of

recess or lunch that they have everything they went

outside with.

If you are missing any property, please check out the

clearly labelled lost property cupboard, located through

the office doors.

Swimming On Thursday 13th February, 27 students from grades

3-6 attended the Berwick Chase Swimming Carnival at

Dandenong Oasis. It was great to see everyone having

a go and supporting their peers. Congratulations to the

27 students who have qualified for District Swimming

which is on Friday 28th February.

What has happened in Science this fortnight?

Year 3 This week was our very first week in the Science lab. We met all the animals and learnt about lab safety.

Year 4 In year four, we asked the Question – ‘What is Science?’ with many of us recalling that Science is in everything we do and say.

Year 5&6

We spent our time making lab safety videos. If you want to check them out, please ask to see our Showbie Science files. Finally, this past two weeks has seen the naming of our ‘I Sea I Care ambassadors for 2020. They are our science captains Gemma and Jessica, along with Lana and Summer. These girls will be helping to spread the word about how important it is that we look after our waterways. Please remember to keep bringing in your 1L water bottles if you’re a student in year four or if you are in year six you will need a 350ml plastic bottle.

Introducing the Specialist team 2020:

Visual Arts Hi everyone, my name is Kate Brennan and I am very lucky to be the Visual Arts Specialist Teacher here at the Chase. I am excited to be back for a fun, exciting new year, ready for Prep’s and 1/2 students for Term 1 and 2.

I love all things creative! (Of course: P) I enjoy drawing, painting, taking photos or researching different artists and their work. I have two dogs Hurley and Daisy,

who are my fur babies. I am obsessed with them, let’s be honest here (I can show photos of them whenever I am asked, or not asked). I love spending time

with my family and friends, especially with my twin nieces who are 9 years old. I enjoy being outdoors in nature, watching movies or getting out and

about on random day trip adventures. We will be doing a range of art, craft and media activities, which will be all sorts of amazing. I look forward to seeing everyone and meeting the new students who have started at the Chase! We always have sooo much fun in Art! I cannot wait to start displaying the amazing artwork we make at the Chase on the walls for everyone to see. I LOVE rainbows, so the art room is very colorful and inviting! Bring on a super awesome 2020!

Science Science is where you will find Mrs Brehaut again this year. 2020 will be my ninth year at the Chase, and my fourth as the school’s science teacher. Science has always been one of my passions and I am excited to be continuing to focus my teaching in this area.

For those families new to the school, I have 17-year-old twins. My husband is an English/Humanities teacher at Alkira Secondary College. I am also a keen supporter of the Brisbane Lions, who will AGAIN finish top ten this year I promise you.

I am also the keeper of the Hen Pen. Our Hens are entered every year into the Royal Melbourne Show’s primary schools poultry competition. Last year we secured second place for our project work. Feel free to drop off some vegie scraps at the Science room door, our girls would love a treat. (No onion or citrus please). There are also various animals dotted throughout the school. Please feel free to drop in and pay them a visit or see me if you have any questions. The Science room is open every Wednesday recess and lunch time for students of all ages to visit.

Berwick Chase is a proud member of the ‘I Sea I Care’ program. This year is the year of the ocean and we are going to be involved in many activities that promote the importance of healthy waterways. Every year I am always in need of different items for the Science room. I am always very thankful of the donations I receive during the year. We are always on the lookout for the odd or different artefacts from families who no longer need things of scientific interest from their own homes and collections.

Library Hello everyone, my name is Fran Hermann and I am the Librarian at Berwick Chase. I want the library to be an open friendly place where students and teachers can browse and borrow from a wide selection of books. The Library is open for longer hours so students have a choice of when they can visit. This includes after school 3:30-3:45 and all lunchtimes, except Tuesdays.

This is my third year at Berwick Chase. I am a keen reader with a special interest in children’s literature and Literacy. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the Library and sharing my love of books.

Physical Education Team Hi everyone, my name is Rob Olsen and I am teaching Physical Education this year. I have been working at Berwick Chase for the past eight years in Physical Education and as a classroom teacher and am looking forward to continuing to build relationships with all the students throughout the school.

I enjoy watching and playing all sports especially, football, soccer, cricket and golf. I am married to Ali, who is also a teacher and we have a 3 and ½ year old son, named Kai and an 1 and ½ year old daughter, named Riley. Our favourite things to do are playing with our dog Sadie, going to the park and going swimming. Our aim in Physical Education is to promote involvement in physical activity and to provide students opportunities to develop their personal, social and

physical skills through fun and engaging activities.

Hi everyone, I’m Jess Cook and this is my sixth year teaching Physical Education at Berwick Chase. Over the summer holidays I went to Queenstown and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. While I was there, my partner Brad asked me to marry him! Of course I was very excited and said YES! I like to stay active by going to the gym as well as playing basketball and netball. I play netball in the Southern Football Netball League and my position is Goal Shooter. I am looking forward to another awesome year of being active, learning new skills and most importantly, having fun in PE.

DigiTech Specialists Hi everyone, our names are De Dumenil and Dirk Jordan – together, we make Berwick Chase’s inaugural ICT Specialist subject! In today’s world we see technology everywhere we go… Put simply, there is more and more emphasis on its use in society due to the capacity and ability of it. Businesses use it, governments use it, and we, as individuals, use it too! We believe this makes learning how to use it appropriately in life

extremely important. We feel that education is the one industry that can make this happen and our school can be leaders in our community through recognising the value of ICT in our society. We believe we have the opportunity and the means to prepare our students for further technological developments in the future!

My name is De Dumenil and I have been teaching your children at The Chase for the last 4 years. I am extremely excited that Dirk and I have been given this opportunity to work together in a Specialist Role in a subject that we are passionate about – we hope to share our love of tinkering with robotics, coding algorithms and even inputting data into spreadsheets with your children! A little about me: I have two beautiful teenage daughters (whom our lives tend to revolve around) – Skye is 16 and studying Year 10 while Leah is almost 15 and in Year 9. My understanding husband Mark helps out as much as he can with our busy schedules, which include: sporting and production commitments in addition to

Skye’s part-time job. When I’m not in the classroom (or playing taxi for the girls) I love to read, to get out and explore Melbourne and all it offers culturally… and sometimes I even manage to catch a movie. My name is Dirk Jordan and, after being in the classroom for a while, I’m looking forward to taking on this new role with De! I have three beautiful girls at my house – my wife, Amanda, 4-year-old daughter Harper, and 8-month-old daughter Peyton. As you can imagine, I don’t get to talk much at home, so I enjoy making up with that whilst at school. I love all forms of sport and am a proud and passionate Hawthorn FC supporter. Another passion of mine is technology and I’m looking forward to exploring this further throughout the year with all our students. If you see us around, please come up and say hi! Auslan (Australian Sign Language) Hello everyone! My name is Jade Decker-Waldschmidt (Mrs DW) and I am very excited to be teaching Auslan again this year, to the Prep-Grade 3’s. I have been part of the Berwick Chase crew for 10 years and during this time I have taught Prep through to Grade 6. At home I am kept very busy with my (almost) 4-year old daughter, our sausage dog – Martini and a new addition expected later this year. We love going on adventures as a family in our caravan and I also love going water skiing, reading and eating chocolate. I am looking forward to teaching a range of new signs this year, including shapes, family, vegetables and feelings. If you see me around the place please come and say (or sign) hello!
