CERTIFICATE II in VISUAL ARTSLast term in Visual Arts Year 12 students worked with agraphical imaging software called GIMP (GNU ImageManipulation Program). Unlike Photoshop or Fireworks, GIMP isfreeware and offers students the chance to enhance their digitalimaging skills. GIMP is a cross-platform image editor availablefor Windows, OS X, Linux and more operating systems.

This kind of software will assist students in multiple careerareas: graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist.GIMP provides students with sophisticated tools to get thejob done. Students can further enhance their productivity withGIMP thanks to many customisation options and third-partyplug-ins.

AGRICULTUREThe agricultural farm has seen a bumper year, with junioragriculture students for the first time having the chance toattend the farm to complete water and soil tests and to identifykey production areas of concern and the sustainable farmingpractices being undertaken.

Students have been involved with handling and leading cattleand great in-roads have been made by all concerned.

At the agricultural farm we are in the process of improvingthe soil, as students have identified three cost effective waysto improve production, including manure which has beendonated, and soil with added organic matter.

We have also budgeted in 2017 to add further variety to ouralready established fruit orchard, with additions of olives andkumquats. Citrus this year has been a very successful seasonfor us with all fruit being sold and very little spoilage.

Sales of honey have been a sticky issue with demandoutweighing supply two fold. We are in the process of bringinga new hive to the farm and potentially a fourth by the end of2017. It is great to see just how much our honey is in demandby the local community.

Water usage is an ongoing issue that has been identified bystudents and as such this year we have implemented T tape togarden beds which has reduced consumption by at least 50%and reduced pests and disease. One of our main aims in 2017is to be able to add solar power at the farm which will make thefarm almost completely environmentally sustainable!

In 2017 we will continue to look to form partnerships within thecommunity to improve the learning outcomes of students bothin junior agriculture and Certificate II in Agriculture.

JUNIOR DEBATINGA big congratulations to our Junior Debaters, Georgia Richards,Hollie Pianta, Isabel King and Matthew Smith who representedour school proudly once again as State High competed in theYear 7 and 8 debating competition.

The first round, with the topic "Teachers should be replaced bycomputers," was held during week three and held a particularchallenge for the students as they were given the difficultaffirmative side of the argument. The next round, that "Zoosshould be banned" was held in week 4 and our students onceagain performed admirably on the affirmative side of the debate. The final round, held last week, had the topic "Halloween is notrelevant to Australia." Our team had their first negative side forthe season but, unfortunately, did not come away with a win.

Congratulations go out to our students who represented theschool admirably and also to the ASSG team who walked awaywith the competition win.

MOVEMBERThis year several of the male staff are participating in Movemberin an effort to raise funds for men’s health and raise awarenessfor issues that affect predominately men such as depressionand suicide.

Globally, the rate of suicide is alarmingly high, particularly inmen. Too many men are ‘toughing it out’, keeping their feelingsto themselves and struggling in silence. The MovemberFoundation aims to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25%by 2030. Scott Parker, Matt de Brenni, Lance MacKenzie andAnthony Cosenza have pledged to grow out their mo for themonth of November in order to help reach these goals. Ifanyone would like to contribute towards the cause or would likemore information you can find it on the team page at:

We will continue to update the pages with our (terrible)moustaches as the month progresses.
