The President’s MessageDear Colleagues,

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you all and to thank you for your involvement with the Rhode Island Chapter of Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriters as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary! As the newly elected President of the Chapter, I am deeply honored and humbled to serve such a distinguished organization with such a rich history.

Our Chapter’s golden anniversary provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the past and to revisit our motivation for becoming CPCUs in the first place. Was it merely to add letters after our names or perhaps to visit an exotic Annual Meeting locale the year of our conferment? Having had an opportunity to meet many of our members, I think not. Instead, it was to attain the knowledge required to achieve a high standard of professionalism manifested in an outwardly visible symbol of our commitment to excellence. Our founders and past leaders believed in that commitment and built a Chapter that continues to reflect that commitment today.

It is not, however, sufficient to celebrate the past. We must look forward and find ways to continue to demonstrate the same commit-ment to excellence in the future. We must promote our successes and learn from our mistakes. We must embrace available technologies to maximize outreach and to best navigate multi-generational audiences. We must continue to identify leaders among our new and future designees and among our existing membership ranks. We must develop ways to make the CPCU “brand” recognizable outside of the insurance community so the values reflected by attainment of the designation are known to all. These goals sound ambitious, but are no less ambitious than the goals our Chapter has regularly managed to accomplish since its founding in 1962.

Thank you again for your continuing support of our Chapter.

Sincerely,

Anne R. Nicoll, CPCURI Chapter President

The year was 1962 when seven men had a vision to create one of the finest CPCU chapters in the country. On November 8, 1962, Paul McLaughlin, Davies Bissett, Jr., Donald Goodby, Christopher Kempf, William Price, Leonard Sweet and Albert Pearson submitted a petition to the board of directors of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters for permission to create the “Rhode Island Chapter.”

Since its small beginning in 1962, the Rhode Island Chapter of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters has attained the status of a large chapter with more than 200 members. During the past 50 years, the chapter has garnered many awards under the leadership of its various presidents, including the “President’s Award” under the presidencies of Andy Erickson, 1986-1987, and Meredith Taylor, 1991-1992, and the “Circle of Excellence” under the presidencies of Evelyn Watkins, Silvana Klara, Robert Reifel, Anthony Bucci, Jim Will, Bob Feltz, Steve Lavallee, Beth Cambra, Mario Morales and Calvin Strong from 2002 – 2012.

Excellence Through Education

The Society of CPCU and its members have long

recognized the important role that education plays in

the lives of those committed to the highest standards of

professionalism. In 1986, through the efforts of President

Andrew M. Erickson, CPCU, the Rhode Island Chapter of

CPCU established the Rhode Island CPCU Scholarship

Fund. This program fosters both education and excellence

through the awarding of scholarships to college students

from families employed within the Rhode Island insurance

community, based on demonstrated excellence in

academic performance.

All contributions are tax-deductible and directly

increase the endowment principal. Scholarships have been

awarded annually since the inception of the fund. Last year,

a total of $17,000 was awarded to six exceptional students.

Since its beginning, the fund has awarded $187,000 to

112 recipients.

Our current goal is to provide even greater service to

the Rhode Island insurance community by being able to

continue to increase our scholarship amounts to deserving

students each year. To do so will require a significant

increase in the size of the Rhode Island CPCU Scholarship

Fund, and we earnestly request your support.

Checks payable to RI CPCU Scholarship Fund may be

sent to Stefvan Drezek, CPCU, c/o Amica Mutual Insurance
